I have heard rumors but cannot confirm. Does anyone have any info?

There was a Facebook group that a couple friends joined. It was the New Twins Bar or something similar, but I can’t seem to find it now. It had some picture of an ultra swanky cocktail lounge as its profile pic. But they were quick to point out this wasn’t an actual picture of the new Twins but just an example of their vision for the direction of the bar. I’d guess someone on here must have liked that page and has some more info.

Rumor. When I asked about it, the source wanted to know “where I heard that” and specifically asked if it was Facebook. If it’s not reopening, does anybody have thoughts on what would do well there? Maybe Jim Carlson is negotiating a lease as we speak.

I know the new owners! It is re-opening.

Carl Green is the new owner. The Duluth City Council approved the transfer of the liquor license last night.

There was a story on WDIO news tonight about it being remodeled and ready to open on Nov. 15.

Owner is a thief. His manager bought tables for bar from us now owner won’t pay for them. Told us to take him to court. Please don’t spend your $$ here.

It’s official, we will have to live without a dive bar east of Mesaba. I visited Twins. Ick. Thimble-size drink glasses, Black Water prices. They took out the booths! Sad.

I haven’t been to the reopened Twins Bar yet, but the above comment would be the only thing I’ve heard that suggests it’s not a dive.

Owner is a thief” and “Shots fired outside Central Hillside bar,” are more in line with the word on the street.

Duluth Police Dept. Shots Fired Incident News Release:

On Sunday, Feb. 16, at 1:37 a.m. Duluth Police were called to the Twin’s Bar at 501 E. Fourth St. for several people fighting outside and that a black male wearing a red jacket had a firearm sticking out of his pants. While squads are responding the call was updated that shots were fired.

Initial investigation revealed that a 73-year-old male armed private security guard was working for the Twin’s Bar and saw a fight just outside of the bar. As he approached he saw several other people near two people fighting and noticed another male standing on the sidewalk with a gun in his hand. The guard shouted at the suspect to put the gun down; the suspect instead pointed it at him and the guard fired one round. The suspect ran north on Fifth Avenue East and stopped and turned around toward the guard and again raised the gun and pointed it at him, the guard fired a second round and the suspect ran off.

The guard was unsure if he hit the suspect with either shot, no evidence was found at the scene to indicate the suspect was hit.

If anyone has information about this incident they are asked to call 911. This is an active investigation and no further information is available at this time.

I’m really confused as to how a case related to child support non-payment has anything to do with it being a dive bar? I’m not saying it isn’t, I’m just curious what the connection is, I thought it would be something to do with TeacherB’s comment about non-payment for tables.

  10. Paul Lundgren on February 17, 2014 at 7:39 pm

It’s example #2 of sketchy behavior. No table payment, no child-support payment.

It doesn’t mean the bar is a dive, but it’s further evidence that would lead one toward that opinion.

A fistfight turned gunfight outside also doesn’t mean the bar is a dive, but it’s further evidence that would lead one toward that opinion.

I’m open to hearing the contradictory evidence. As I mentioned before, I haven’t been there yet myself. Maybe I’ve got it all wrong.

Ok, just wondering. I just thought from the title of the link maybe it would be the (potential) court case referenced in TeacherB’s comment. Was just curious if there was some connection I was missing.

Above is WDIO-TV’s follow up report on the shooting (after the 15-second commercial) and here is a link to the Duluth News Tribune’s follow up story: Duluth police investigate shots fired outside Central Hillside bar.

This is usually a good indicator that it’s a pretty divey bar:

    The evidence is overwhelming.

And now the days are numbered.

Green said negative publicity in the media about the bar cut into his business.

No, being a shyster cut into his business.

    Final chapter?

Drove by this morning and there is a large Coca-Cola banner/sign that states that something called the Break Room will be coming soon and it will be the place to enjoy a Coke (complete paraphrase as I didn’t take a picture).

Yes, it’s going to reopen as an upscale pool hall. The new owner was hoping to open in mid to late September.
