Select Images from Denfeld’s 1921 Oracle
The images in this post are all from various collages in the 1921 yearbook, so unfortunately they were about one-inch-high and don’t look very sharp when blown up. In gallery form, however, they are adequate enough. (more…)
The Duluth Mansion
Well, here’s something. I guess it’s the next in the series of weird Duluth-related trailers. (Previous one: Duluth: A new film by Nicole Brending).
This week: munchkins, politicians, dancers and other things that go bump in the night
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Have you checked out the new hobbies event tag? There are scores of regular and one off events including the premier of Munchkin Munday today at Rogue Robot.
U.S. House Representative candidates Chip Cravaack and Rick Nolan face off in a debate at the Duluth Playhouse Tuesday morning. This event is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and preregistration is encouraged.
Black Label Movement presents Wreck, a dance theater event, on Tuesday and Wednesday at Clyde Iron.
Renegade Theater Company presents the world premier of Ghost Light on Thursday at the Teatro Zuccone. From the mind of local playwright, Andy Bennett, Ghost Light features illusions and special effects to tell the story of four college students spending the night in a haunted theater. I read an early draft of this script and you do not want to miss this. Ghost Light runs for three weekends.
The Haunted Ship starts up on Thursday at the William A. Irvin and runs through Halloween.
The Harbor City Roller Dames start their new season on Saturday with a bout against the Minnesota Roller Girls Dagger Dolls at Pioneer Hall in the DECC.
So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!`
Lost cat in Midway Township found
She made it home about midnight last night. I don’t know where she has been since we searched everywhere and she isn’t talking. She lost some weight and wants to sleep a lot. I just want to thank all our neighbors as well as the people at Friends of Animals in Cloquet and Animal Allies here in Duluth for all their kind words of support.
Plastic Bag Recycling
Does anyone know where I can recycle plastic shopping bags (besides Walmart, because I have heard a rumor that they sell them for their own profit)?
Fond du Lac young people march for kids
I was on my way into work this morning and I saw some young people from the Take Back Our Rez Facebook group walking along Big Lake Road on Fond du Lac Reservation. That’s like the equivalent of rush hour as it is the main artery to and from Highway 33 and I-35, lots of cars headed up and down the road on the way to work or school. (more…)
You forgot something the other night …
Perhaps this brief rant is more appropriate for Craig’s List, but I’ll digress anyway … (more…)
Duluth Rose Garden and leaf drop off
Can anyone out there tell me if we can start dropping off leaves at the Leif Erickson Park Rose Garden? Please and thanks.
Remembering the Duluth Bicycle Tree
An old “Where in Duluth?” post reminded me of the “Bicycle Tree” near the College of St. Scholastica. Eight years ago, or longer, a collection of bikes started growing on a tree … or whatever happened. I actually never saw it, I only heard about it. Fortunately, Tony Rogers has a whole gallery of photos from 2004.
Heck of the North 2012 Teaser
This is a teaser for the Heck of the North short film premiering soon. It is a short documentary on the Heck of the North Gravel Cycling Classic that is held annually in Duluth.

Missing: Male Yellow Lab
Our family is missing our 5-year-old male (not neutered), yellow lab named Riley. He ran from our house in the Arrowhead/Kenwood/Rice Lake area on 9/28/12. He didn’t have his collar on but is mirco-chipped. He is friendly and has a big/block head! Please help us find him. Our 2-year-old misses his buddy. If you have any information on him call/text Meghan or Cody at 651.238.1921 or 515.231.5562.
For more info and pictures see our ad on Craigslist under “lost & found” or “pets.”

Free Both
If you were alive in the 2000s, then you were part of the international phenomenon knows as Bothomania, an uncontrollable urge to listen to Both. Unfortunately for many, this frenzy often resulted in the complete and total destruction of all physical materials associated with the band.
Flash forward to today (the future and present), where we have all shuffled off this physical coil and all things are made accessible though tubes aligned in series. Things including the three (3) studio albums (aka LPs aka CDs) that the band released before achieving a simultaneous state of burning out and fading away.
You can stream them (aka listen to them on your computing box/calculator) and download them (aka store them on your phone/game machine) for free (aka for no money or trade) here and here and here but not here.
Last Place on Earth first-of-the-month sale
Drive by the Last Place on Earth today and watch your tax money going up in smoke!
Someone stole my kids pumpkins again!
I have had it. On and off over the years that I have lived on 43rd Avenue East my childrens’ pumpkins have been stolen. The first year they were smashed against our sidewalk after they had been carved. Another year they were just stolen. Last year we rigged them to spray water if they were moved and put up a sign as such; they were not stolen. This year we thought we could thwart the person by buying 70-pound-plus-size pumpkins from my brother-in-law figuring it would be too much effort to get a car to steal them. Well, this morning I come outside and all five of our extra large pumpkins are gone.
The kids are devastated. They picked out these “Cindrella” pumpkins from their uncle in Wadena and were really excited to carve them. Who does this type of thing? I’m going to drive around Lakeside during lunch today and look for them. If you stole them, please bring them back. You made for some very sad children this morning.
Lost at Hawk Ridge
Please tell me other people get lost hiking in that area…maybe I’m extra dumb, but this was my third time. A walk that was supposed to be about an hour turned into 2 hours and 38 minutes, and yes I counted. Wow — !!! Somehow I lost my trail on the way back and the return trail deviated really far into the wrong direction…I was very happy to see my car again…and I can walk OK today, amazingly. I must be in better shape than I thought. Next time I will bring a map!
This week: oceans, photography and yadda yadda yadda
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Your chance to learn the art of letter press printing starts today at Pineapple Arts.
On Tuesday and Wednesday the Great Lakes Aquarium is hosting a live teleconference of Our Global Ocean with scientists discussing the current and future state of our oceans.
Rubber Chicken Theater opens David Mamet’s November this Thursday at the Play Ground and it runs for two weekends. With stage veteran Chris Nollet playing a fictional President Charles Smith you know this is going to be a hoot.
Jerry Seinfeld plays the DECC on Friday. Insert Seinfeld catchphrase here.
This Friday and Saturday Lake Superior Magazine presents an outdoors photography workshop called “Be a Better Photographer” at the Inn on Lake Superior. This is for people who have completed the “Be an Abysmal Photographer” and “Be a Mediocre Photographer” workshops.
So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!`
Gear stolen from Sacred Heart Studio
Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30, someone entered Sacred Heart Studio while I was in the back office and made off with two items; a green Matchless DC 30 combo guitar amplifier and a red Fender PJ bass. I am posting a picture of a similar amp.
The theft has been reported to the police. If you have any information about these items please contact the Duluth police or call/text me at 218-390-4794. Thanks for any help.
Marty Mann Halfway House
The sweatshirt/T-shirt pictured here (image no longer available at source) has the name “Marty Mann” on it and an unusual design. Does anyone know if this was issued by the Marty Mann Halfway House in Duluth? Marty Mann was one of the first women in Alcoholics Anonymous and founded the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
Construction at Spirit Mountain
Here’s what the new chalet at the bottom of the hill at Spirit Mountain looks like today. It should be complete during this ski season.
By the way, Mont du Lac recently built a new chalet at the top of its hill, which will open this winter. Neither ski area has plans for a chalet halfway down a hill.
Stolen Yard Signs
My wife and I are disappointed. We have had a “vote no” sign in our yard for the past month or so. One was stolen, like other signs in the neighborhood. I saw one or two homemade signs to replace what were stolen. We told ourselves that paying another $10 for a replacement would just be more money to the cause, so we got another. We also put a bunch of staples in the new sign and connected it to a tree with wire. We figured that they would really need to work to take it. They did. Is this happening elsewhere in town (we are in Lakeside)? How can such behavior be anything but theft? I cringe when I walk by a yard with a “vote yes” sign, but I don’t steal the sign. I think somebody’s values are seriously out of whack. We are disappointed. It’s apparently not enough to limit the freedom to marry, but free speech is also out of bounds.
