Brewhouse at Great American Beer Festival

Big congrats to the Fitger’s Brewhouse for winning a medal at the GABF 2012. Fitger’s Framboise took the bronze in the American-style Sour Ale category. I haven’t tried it, but I’m sure it’s fantastic.

Boy with Red Balloon in Downtown Duluth

Here’s a short video (plus a few snapshots) that I took last spring following one of the Saturday Morning Film showings outside of Zinema 2 in Old Downtown Duluth. Hopefully they continue the series again this coming winter and spring. It was cheap, family friendly, and pretty dang engaging for the parents, grandparents and hipsters in the crowd, too. You don’t often get that combination from the megacineplex fare.

Do I get some kind of prize if I am the first person to use the “sappy stuff” tag? Bragging rights and/or swag would be acceptable.

Virgin Mobile claws back TBT hashtag

Twitter nerds will understand this. Hashtag humor. It’s a niche category.

Rosie’s Taco Trailer in Duluth Heights

I never post anything here, but I felt it was my civic duty to inform the PDD community about Un Taco Mas by Rosie, a taco trailer in the parking lot of Old World Meats. Rosie is from San Antonio, Texas, and makes the best taco I have had in Duluth. I had one carne asada and one carne quisada. She made the flour tortillas fresh while I waited, the filling was amazing. She has a full breakfast menu as well, she is there from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. It is on the corner of Basswood Avenue and Central Entrance. The place is very much worth the visit.

Haines Road temporarily open between Skyline Parkway and Morris Thomas Road

Haines Road has re-opened between Skyline Parkway and Morris Thomas Road. (Haines Road below Skyline, where it connects to 40th Avenue West, remains closed.) This means it is again possible to travel along Skyline across Haines Road.

Lights Out! as Migration Season ends.

My friends at Wildwoods say: “Dim the lights and brighten the future! Birds can be drawn off course by bright lights in our cities. By turning off unnecessary lights after midnight we can save money, energy and migrating birds.” (more…)

Steve Martin tweets Duluth

Earlier today, comedian Steve Martin tweeted a picture of the Duluth Vinyl Roofs / Arrowhead Hearing Aid Center on Superior Street noting, “I love it when businesses combine. So convenient!”

If you’re on Twitter and you like Steve Martin, he’s worth following. Funny stuff. Go Duluth!

When at Krenzen Service Center …

My way of passing the time yesterday at Krenzen . . .

Take advantage of the huge curved blackboard set up next to the waiting area – a great way to pass the time while the Honda gets serviced.

The Lowertown Line

Twin Cities Public Television is launching a new live-performance music show similar to Austin City Limits. It’s called The Lowertown Line, and the pilot episode will feature Duluth’s Trampled by Turtles. The taping is scheduled for Oct. 24 at TPT’s studio in Lowertown, St. Paul.

Evening with the Stars?

Hey did anyone ever go to WDIO’s Evening with the Stars in the past couple years? I think the first year was in Greysolon and then it got so big that they moved it to the DECC. It was kind of a spin off of the ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. I haven’t heard an announcement about it this year. Last year it was held on Oct. 18.

I guess all good things come to an end. Sigh. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, the event had a big band as well as some other local musicians, with lots of great dancing, a fun night of dressing up, free food, and vendors to check out and play games, etc. My wife and I really enjoyed attending it. We’re sad to see that it doesn’t seem to exist this year.

Halloween banners

Got any good Halloween photos? It’s the annual call for Halloween banners on PDD. Remember, not every photo makes a good PDD banner.

Some basic rules:
The image must be 960 pixels wide by 167 pixels high. The Perfect Duluth Day logo will be added by PDD’s art department.
The lower portion of banner photos serve as background to the navigation bar, so crop your image with that in mind. Make sure essential elements are not in the area that will be obscured. Don’t stretch the photo to make it fit the ridiculously horizontal proportions. That always looks poopy, and will probably disqualify the photo from bannerdom.

If all of this is too much to wrap your head around, or you don’t have the right image editing software, e-mail the uncropped photo, and we’ll do our best to crop it so it looks good.

Send them to banners@perfectduluthday.com.

So I bought $40 worth of coke today …

So I bought $40 worth of coke today … Coca-Cola that is. The final production run of Coke in returnable 6.5 oz bottles in the US was made last week in Winona, MN. Sad, the end of an era, an American icon and they were one of many things I like about my little river town. They are selling the last 5500 bottles for $20 each and all the proceeds go toward maintaining and improving Winona’s bicycle paths around the lake. I am saving one bottle forever and the other I will drink after after a nice autumn motorcycle ride and with a good meal. Cheers!

Leather

Does any know if there is a craft store that sells leather supplies? I used to get scraps of moose hide from Henry’s in Ely, but since his death the scraps aren’t available anymore.

This week: zombies, demons, witches and vampires

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

The League of Women Voters hosts a debate for the House of Representatives 7B candidates, Travis Silvers and Erik Simonson, at Good Fellowship Community Center on Tuesday.

Break out your blood resistant happy pants for the return of Evil Dead: The Musical by Rubber Chicken Theater! It runs Thursday through Saturday this week and next at the Venue.

And there’s lots more spooky Halloween fun this week with The Witches at the Duluth Playhouse, Dracula at the DECC, The Woman in Black at Glensheen, Nosferatu at the Scottish Rite Auditorium, Boo at the Zoo at the Zoo and lots more.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!`

Eagle in Need

From the director of Wildwoods:

Thanks so much to P and M, who brought this wounded bald eagle down from Cook this evening, after she’d been hit by a car. Thanks to them, she has a chance. She needs a ride to the Raptor Center asap; please call us at 218-491-3604 if you can help. Pictures courtesy of N, who helped in the care of this bird.  Please “share” this; let’s find this bird a ride. Time is of the essence to save her wing. Thanks! – Wounded bald eagle 10/13/12

What amazes me is the quiet dignity with which eagles carry themselves even in times of injury and great pain.

“SW” potter up the North Shore?

Does anyone have information on the potter up the North Shore who signs his work with SW? He makes incredibly well-crafted pieces and has a ping-pong table in his workshop. I stopped into his place years ago but never got his name, story or business card.

Lost: black cat

My cat went missing Aug. 11. I know it’s been a long time since he’s been home but after reading a few posts on this website, it seemed like it really helped get the word out. He was last seen near 13th Avenue East and Second Street near Walgreens. He’s an all black neutered male about 1 year old. He has all his claws and is very friendly. Please help me bring my best friend back home! If you have any information on him please call or text Ashley at 651-983-9828. For more information, I have put a Craigslist ad up under both “pets” and “lost and found” in the Duluth area.

The Good in America

Who hasn’t thought about what a gift it would be to travel to every state in the U.S.A. just to see what’s within the borders? In the spirit of traveling authors and journalists like Terkle, Steinbeck and Kuralt, Trek Thunder Kelly is doing just that. Traveling through Minnesota, the 35th state on the road of his adventure, Trek stopped in at Loll HQ in Duluth last Thursday to say hi and see what Duluth has to offer.

What do Duluthians want?

The DNT article about Rod Raymond and Tim Nelson’s purchase of Endion Station said this:

Raymond said he will take advice from anyone wanting to chime in on the finer points of his business plan.

“What do Duluthians want?” he said. “What do tourists want?”

So, what do you want?

Tops on my list would be a bakery that sells artisan bread and really good coffee. With outdoor seating.

What do you want?
