Help-Portrait
This is a “call out” to all Duluth and surrounding area photographers, makeup artists, and hair stylists. I am trying to organize a Help-Portrait event on Dec. 8 at the American Indian Community Housing Organization in Duluth.

Dan Hanger gets the last word
Did anyone else catch Dan Hanger’s feelings on some footwear at the very end of tonight’s (Thursday) Fox 21 newscast?
“I don’t like boots.” … awkward silence … roll end credits.
I only wish I had the video clip.
Duluth’s New Nameless Park
Today there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new park above the corner of the Lakewalk holding tank — aka the East Interceptor Sanitary Sewer Overflow Storage Facility.
And the city is looking for citizens to come up with a name for it. (more…)
Bishops Muscling Votes
I’m concerned about a “vote this way” letter received recently from our local Catholic bishop. Urges a yes vote for the November ballot “MN marriage amendment” and that you send the “yes” group money. This church move oversteps the line in my opinion. I vote for the church to lose tax exemptions.
Air Duct Cleaning Recommendation?
Does anyone have good experience with an air/furnace duct cleaner in Duluth?
Spirit Valley Fresh Farm Market
Was the place with the Spirit Valley Fresh Farm Market sign a farmers’ market at one time? As near as I can tell, the answer is yes. I can’t really verify it was a farmers’ market, or provide any details about how it operated, but the 1984 city directory does list a “Spirit Valley Fresh Farm Market” at 5831 Grand Ave. in West Duluth. Karen H. Linder was listed as the proprietor. (more…)
After-school volunteers needed for new program at Congdon Park Elementary
We are looking for volunteers on Mondays and/or Wednesdays from 2 to 5:15 p.m. (or any chunk of time in there!) starting next week and going until December 12 (or May 8 if you want to be with us the whole year!) We need volunteers to spend time with the kids, assist the class instructors and be positive role models.

Duluth Christmas Party Ideas
I’m looking for some ideas for our company Christmas party. I’d like a place with a kitchen (I have a friend who will be catering for us) and enough room for a sit-down dinner for about 45 people. Any suggestions?
Missing music gear?
About a month ago, we accidentally grabbed something that wasn’t ours at RT’s and want to get it back to the rightful owner! Shoot me an email with a description and I will get it to you asap!
Maia returns home….
After a night of Labrador debauchery … gastronomic adventures indescribable. Oh, the consequences of such indulgence!!! She is currently undergoing abdominal surgery for intestinal obstruction. I’m sure she will get her wag back soon, but I am not so sure this will alter her adventurous palatte.
More happy hatting!
I’m about to start a new beginning millinery class. We’ll start on Monday, September 24 and go for 6 weeks. Class will be from 6-7:30. We’ll begin with felt, millinery felt, which is quite different from felted wool. Think fedora or cowboy hat. That material, but not (necessarily) that shape. Only softer.

Do we at least have the Duluth record?
Apparently, the record for heads on a single sunflower plant is in the low 100s. This one from PDD’s West Duluth Headquarters only has about 25 heads — which the Internet tells us is actually rather common. Anyway, some critter chewed this sucker down last night, so our attempt at the record has fallen considerably short.
Where in Duluth?
This episode of Where in Duluth? might be a little tricky, but I decided to add it because 1) it is on a building that faces a heavily-travelled street, and 2) it also is a perfect example of a building anomaly found in this awesome webcomic: Subnormality.
This week: candidates, airplanes and stewardesses
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
The name of the band is Järvelän Pikkupelimannit and from what I can see from their video that’s pronounced “fun.” They’re swinging through from Finland to play tonight at Sacred Heart.
I know you usually get all your voting information from PDD, YouTube and DNT editorials, but you could see the candidates up close and personal this week and think for yourself. Just saying. The candidates for the Senate seat will be at the Playhouse on Tuesday and the candidates for the Senate and House seats will be at St. Scholastica on Thursday.
The first show of the Playhouse season opens Thursday. Boeing Boeing is a farce set in the ’60s in which a playboy architect attempts to juggle relationships with three stewardesses. Because this is the ’60s and they weren’t called flight attendants back then.
And we aren’t done with festival season. Not by a long shot. Oktoberfest runs Friday and Saturday and the Duluth Airshow is Saturday and Sunday.
The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra has the first concert of its new season on Saturday at the DECC with music by Copland and Tchaikovsky.
So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!`
Please vote for Michael Jackson
A recent Duluth East graduate, Michael Jackson, is one of four finalists for a NASCAR-sponsored humanitarian award. He has already generated a $25,000 donation to the Starlight Children’s Foundation by being a finalist; the winner will be able to direct $100,000 to the charity of his or her choice.

Burned out on politics? Give Duluth good energy.
Here is something to snap you out of the political backwash. The city of Duluth is starting a community visioning process that will help to establish a Local Energy Action Plan. This is your chance to get involved and help create a clear picture of how Duluth really wants to participate in the increasingly important subject of energy.
The first meeting is Monday, Sept. 17, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Lake Superior College, Building S, Room 2964. This meeting will set the stage, so make it if you can. Otherwise look for a post about the new website that will explain the process and how good the energy was at the first meeting.
Lost Cat in Midway Township on Old Highway 61 and Maplehill Road
She is a 1-year-old female Black Cat with while boots and stomach. Her name is Beebee. She was last seen Saturday night around 11 p.m. Got out of the house through an open garage door. She is not an outside cat and way too trusting. Very affectionate … she was a bottle bay rescue. She is micro chipped. She will come to you if you call her. If you see her or find her please call 349-9109 or 349-3481.

Confusing enough?
This sign is on the entrance to the Green Door Lounge in Beaver Bay. I guess it means that even though the place is going to be closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, it will still be “open” on Mondays and Tuesdays … with the quotation marks maybe indicating that they are “open for suggestions” or something. Maybe that’s how the “new hours” work.
David Bazan live from Sacred Heart
David Bazan and Andy Fitts recently came to Duluth to do two living-room shows in Duluth. I was thrilled at the opportunity to get him to come to Sacred Heart and record some songs and be a part of a Lakefront Videos project. I think it turned out super sweet.
Whatever happened to the Canal Park Holiday Inn?
The old Holiday Inn in Duluth was located in Canal Park, just down from downtown, and this was before all the new development happened in Canal Park. In the 1980s, it had its name changed to something else. I don’t remember what that name was, or if the building is even still there. Can anyone bring me up to date?
