This week: goat ladies, open houses and dragsters

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

You can attend some open houses this week. The YMCA is having an open house Tuesday through Sunday and Yoga North is having one on Sunday.

You can hear District 07B state representative candidates Travis Silvers, Jay Fosle and Erik Simonson at a live forum on Wednesday at the Play Ground.

Just to emphasize the passing of summer, Aaron Kloss opens a showing of his acrylic paintings collectively entitled “Awesome Autumn” at Beaner’s this Thursday.

Bayfront will be hosting the Lake Superior Harvest Festival this Saturday with food and live music and live demonstrations of blacksmithing, beekeeping, and “goat ladies.” I’ll leave the last to your imagination.

The Sixth Annual Burrito Union 5 & 10 Hour Triathlon will also be this Saturday in Pattison State Park.

Garfield Avenue will be the domain of hot rods and roadsters this weekend for the Duluth Drag Race.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!`

Welcome to Washburn, Wisconsin!

Little Free Library in the Twin Ports?

Someone asked on Twitter today if there are any Little Free Libraries in the Twin Ports. So, are there any around?

(While reading the blog, I noticed that Claire wrote an article for Publishers Weekly on the movement … maybe you might know?)

Duluth Superior Pride 2012

Perfect day for a parade.

Is that the lift bridge?

Is that the lift bridge at 2:56? I also thought the fireworks scene looked vaguely Duluthy at first but on second and third glance I don’t see how it could be, the bridge is in the wrong position related to the fireworks unless they are coming from Superior. Anyone else care to take a stab at it? (more…)

Minnesota Chippewa could cease to exist by 2080

I’m not sure if that headline is sufficiently dramatic, or maybe overly dramatic, but I am just having trouble wrapping my head around this chart from the September 2012 (PDF link) Fond du Lac Tribal Newspaper (Nahgahchiwanong Dibahjimowinnan).

It shows the Fond du Lac people falling into a demographic abyss. Disappearing as a people by 2080. (more…)

Obama sucks; defeat the liar

The latest campaign sign to add to PDD’s collection of whack-job yard art is this one on Highway 13 near Washburn, Wis.

Looking for a few good Trojans

The Duluth Central Trojans All-Team Basketball Reunion is set for Oct 26 and 27. We’re still trying to locate former players (boys and girls), cheerleaders and fans. The reunion committee is also looking for Duluth Central basketball memorabilia: photos, programs, etc.

We already have an old-timers game set and we will meet with legendary Central coaches after the game hosted by former Trojan and current mayor Don Ness.

For all the details go to: duluthcentraltrojansbbreunion.blogspot.com.

Roadside Eggs

Does anyone by chance know of a decent, reliable source of farm-raised eggs in the area, outside of the the Whole Foods Co-op? I grew up in an area where the roadsides were dotted by eggs-for-sale signs. I recently moved back to Duluth, and am on the hunt for eggs again.

PDD Poll: How Much Heat?

The stereotype maintains that it’s hard to get spicy restaurant food around here because so many people prefer their food on the mild side. Where do you stand?

I shot episode 6 of my ninja web series at Lester River

This is pretty boring, but I love seeing the river in black and white.

Adam Swanson paintings at the Zeitgeist

Thirty-five of Adam Swanson’s paintings are on display at the Zeitgeist Arts Café here in Duluth for the next several weeks. Last night I caught the opening and found his work as vibrant as ever. I encourage friends of the arts to check it out. Here’s a short introduction to the artist for those who don’t know him.

Duluth and the North Shore in Aug/Sept issue of National Geographic Traveler

“Road trips up the Minnesota shore of Lake Superior begin in Duluth, an industrial harbor town at the southern end of a wooded triangle called the Arrowhead and two-lane Highway 61. Also called North Shore Scenic Drive, the paved boundary between woods and waters delivers views of the ancient volcanic basalt cliffs that plunge into Lake Superior, so vast it merges with the sky on the horizon. At the turn of the 20th century, outbound ships loaded with northern Minnesota’s prized iron ore ranked Duluth among the U.S.’s busiest ports.”

Hartley Trail Signage

I rode the mountain-bike trails at Hartley yesterday and could not help but notice the lack of directional signage. Is there a reason why? Is it to keep the area as natural as possible? Lack of funds? Or the locals know where to go and piss on the newbees?

Great time to start piano lessons

The start of the school year is coming up pretty quickly. It’s a great time to start taking piano lessons. I’ve been a piano teacher for 18 years, and moved here from Chicago, where I taught full time, about a year ago. I’m looking for students for my growing studio.

I’ve also recently moved to a house within the city of Duluth. I’m now in a great, easily accessible spot which I would love to disclose to anyone in a private email. I’m posting a link to my hastily thrown together website that has a bit more information about me and my methods. You can find personal contact information there. I’d love to talk to you personally to discuss details of lessons, so give me a call or shoot me an email — both of which you can find on my website!
