Postcard from the Riverview Motel circa 1955

This postcard shows the Riverview Motel in West Duluth, which was replaced in the early 2000s by Westgate Townhomes.

The postmark on this postcard is difficult to read. It appears to be Feb. 7, 1955, but the 3-cent stamp contradicts that. The era of the 3-cent postcard ran from Aug. 1, 1958 to Jan. 7, 1963.

The caption on the back reads:

Riverview Motel
On Highways 61 & 2. Western entrance to Duluth, Minn. Beautiful scenic view of the city and picturesque St. Louis River. Clean, ultra-modern 11-unit motel. Complete with saf-air heaters, shower, Beautyrest mattress & television. Phone 4-2378. Florence & William Franks, Props.

The card was sent to Mr. Mrs. Clinton Fitch of Logan, Iowa. The handwritten message on the back reads:

Hi,
We are sure sorry we didn’t get to see you. Be good and take care of yourself. Write to us at 227 W. 3rd St., Duluth, Minn.
Love, Carol and Max

    What’s that in the sky?

That’s a tree that pulled itself up from its roots and blasted off into outer space. Or it’s a smudge on the card. I can’t tell for sure.
