Sci Fi Spelling Bee
On April 18 I’m going to be hosting the first ever Sci Fi Spelling Bee at the Geek Prom and I need your help. I’m looking for words, terms, people and place names, and so on that are native to some science fiction franchise for use in the bee.
Please give me the following information for your entry.
Word (eg – phaser, Kashyyyk, frak)
Origin (what franchise) (eg – Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica)
Usage (eg – “Set your phaser to stun!” “Chewbacca went back to Kashyyyk.” “What the frak are you talking about?”)
If possible also give me some Documentation (a web link would be good) supporting your entry.
Also, these words don’t have to be hard. They can be fairly simple or intermediate words. They just have to be sci fi words.

Resonance: The Odyssey of the Bells from 7-9PM on April 29th
| You are invited to attend a screening of the documentary film Resonance: The Odyssey of the Bells from 7-9PM on April 29th hosted by the Alworth Institute. Please mark your calendars and forward this invitation to others. This screening is part of the Alworth’s “International Lecture” series. Resonance shows Duluth in a positive light as it highlights the city’s efforts after WWII to mend the scars of the war and re-humanize a former enemy through the return of a centuries-old Buddhist temple bell considered sacred to the Japanese. Discussions will revolve around how a historical documentary like Resonance acts as a reminder of how citizen action plays a crucial role in restoring positive relations with former enemies in the wake of war. A 30-minute version of Resonance will be screened and followed by director Q/A. Where: UMD Montague Hall 80 Directions

Resonance: The Odyssey of the Bells
Resonance tells the forgotten stories of two sacred Buddhist temple bells that survived the scrap metal drives of WWII only to be taken by the US Navy as war trophies and given to the cities of Duluth, Minnesota and Topeka, Kansas. In the decades following the war the difficult process required to return these bells reconnected two nations that had been torn apart by war. For Duluth, the return of this bell forged the connection with Japan that later inspired the prosperous Duluth/Isumi Sister City relationship and Peace Bell in Enger Park. |
Project History – Project Goals The documentary film Resonance is built on research conducted in America, Japan and Great Britain. After learning of over five bells brought to the United States after WWII, a story emerged that focuses on the Duluth and contrasting Topeka bell story. In the fall of 2007, a 10-minute excerpt of the film was aired on Twin Cities Public TV in conjuction with Ken Burns’ “The War.” The 30-minute version of the film is an official selection at the 2009 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, April 15-28th. Resonance will be entered in national and international film festivals and seek broadcast on both American and Japanese public television. |

“The Tower: A Rapunzel Musical” debuts in a staged reading. This musical comedy updates the story of the girl with very long hair, focusing on the relationship of a couple of imprisoned people who find each other. The production is written and scored by UMD senior Alicia Heckler, whom you’ve seen in “Seussical” as a kangaroo, in “LaTraviata” as Annina, and in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” as Domina.

Bangkok Royal?
I know it’s a sometimes losing proposition to ask PDDers for their opinions on restaurants (half usually judge food based solely on price, while the other half have such oh-so-sensitive palates that anything served between the two coasts is intolerable and repulsive*) but nonetheless, here I go.
Has anyone eaten at the Bangkok Royal located in the Village Square Mall? What was your experience like?

Bob’s Basement Sale is back, with a vengance
My last sale put the “suck” in success, but like my old JV football coach said: “TENACITY!!” So, I’m giving it another whirl, and you’re all invited, again. Conan O’Brien back on-air June 1st – Hurry!
IMHO Late Night TV needs Conan back ASAP. I hope his format, when he takes over the Tonight Show June 1st, stays similar to how his Late Show was. I remember the time when Conan or Kimmel?? did a live broadcast feed from Duluth about something, maybe some guy creating an ice sculpture or something..?? Anyone remember what it was about? I just remember a bunch of people started showing up and the guys he was interviewing were some real characters, like missing teeth and whatnot. One guy was on some kinda weird homemade moto-trike. If any one can find the video from that post it! I can’t find it anywhere. I thought it as Conan but it may have been Kimmel.
Gotta love the rappin William Shatner remix… Hurry back Conan.

Young Goodman Brown – “Runnin’ Down a Dream”
Thought this might be a good day for a little fun since it sucks so bad outside. Here we have the last known video by the band Young Goodmann Brown … doing their version of Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down A Dream.” This is it, I have no more video featuring these boys. However, I do have an entire 1991 performance by a great little band called Zen Identity … taped in the spring of 1991 at the Cove Cabaret. Anyone interested in that?
