Also, didn’t Craig get fired from doing a local commercial radio show of his own? This letter feels suspiciously like personalized sour grapes…and it’s talking about “tracks.” Lew Latto didn’t play the latest Nickelback singles, last I checked.
Another also — Lew was replaced with more local programming, was he not? This is to say, they didn’t replace him with “Car Talk,” right?
First of all. I left KZIO due to the fact that I wanted to earn some money and they weren’t willing to pay me anything. They wanted me to work for free.
Second, That letter is exactly what I sent in to the DNT.

Rosemary and mushrooms help to flavor this melt-in-your-mouth tender lamb. This lamb cooks for about 10 to 12 hours, and it’s perfect for a busy day meal.
Ingredients:
* 2 tablespoons olive oil
* 4 to 6 lamb shanks, about 6 pounds
* 1 cup Pinot Noir or Burgundy, or other dry red wine
* 3 tablespoons grainy Dijon mustard
* 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
* 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
* 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
* 1 heaping tablespoon fresh chopped rosemary, or about 1 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
* 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, or 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
* 4 large cloves garlic, finely minced
* 16 ounces sliced mushrooms
* 1 large carrot, diced
* 12 to 16 ounces small white onions, peeled, or 2 medium onions, cut in wedges
Preparation:
*To peel the onions, drop in boiling water and boil for 3 minutes. Transfer to cold water. Cut off root end and slip off skins. Frozen small white onions may be used.
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil. Cook the lamb shanks in the hot oil, turning frequently, until browned on all sides. Place the browned lamb shanks in a 5 to 7-quart slow cooker. Add the peeled onions or onion wedges to the slow cooker.
Meanwhile, combine the wine with mustard, vinegar, salt, pepper, rosemary, parsley, and garlic; set aside.
To the hot skillet, add mushrooms and carrots. Cook the mushrooms and carrots for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Spoon the vegetables over the lamb shanks. Pour the wine mixture into the skillet, scraping up the browned bits with a spatula. Bring to a simmer; pour over the lamb shanks in the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on HIGH for 2 hours. Reduce heat to LOW and cook for 6 to 8 hours longer.
Serves 4 to 6.
I wonder what happens if you mixed top forty executives with talent add in a pinch of venue and grilled to a nice full house? I bet they would be confused and wouldnt know what songs to pick out of thier arcives of worn out CDs.
FCC? Well that is a very interesting subject and could be likened to one or more of the seven deadly(not that I am a Bible Banger no offence).
This reminds me of the thought process of somebody at lets say an average major record label. I’ll bet that public radio (with its indi music that doesnt make them any money) makes them talk to thier other buddys and try to put a stop to it.
I will also bet that Beethoven would roll over in his grave with the idea that somebody is makeing money off of his music and very little was going to the musicians that play it.
Whores and booze were his penchant but he also died without money because he paid his musicians well and took very little for himself.
I have also read that 50,000 people came to his funeral!!! I will also bet that no major record label exec gets that kind of attention and love.
Peace to the writers,the performers, the techs and the airwaves that carry the independant music!!!! May they overcome!!!!!

Two: Lew Latto WAS on the air from 7am-9am. Brad Bennett WAS on the air from 9am-11am. Since Latto was taken off, Brad Bennett is now on from 8am-11am. 5am-8am is now filled by some nationally syndicated (and insanely boring) host. So…((2+2=4)-2)+1= 3 hours of local daily programming now compared to 4 hours when Latto was still on the air.
Of course, none of this would be a problem if everyone would just download Danny Does Duluth every weekday where you get a completely commercial-free nearly 2 hours each week of fine, upstanding local programming. We had Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirell’s handler on today, you know.
Personally Craig, I liked the sentiment of your letter. I found Lew Latto to be a terrible radio host and rather offensive at times, yet I still listened to his show if I was in my car while he was on. Ironically I can envision a day when a population armed with ipods may no longer tune to the radio for music, and will instead turn to radio for one of the few things not available on itunes…relevant local talk radio. Sadly I think that radio stations may be driven into the ground before they ever realize where their market went.
I agree with you Andy. Yet, not all the radio markets as dumb as this market we live in. One of my favorite stations in the whole wide world is 89.9 The Current and Radio K down in the cities. Those two stations have survived and made profit by embracing new unheard music and new technology. I listen more to The Current and Radio K than I do 94sux.
I also would like to point out that as soon as the website for localm.com is finally done. That I will be working on launching a internet radio station for the Twin Ports and have discussed partnerships with a couple of the Twin Cities Internet stations for a sharing of programs and content.

They completely get all of these concepts of local music, news and views and also just local fun. they are regional and authentic … I mean REALLY authentic, not in a “red green” caricature kind of authentic. (One aside is that I think after decades of not quite getting it, KUMD is shifting to more of local music and public affairs awareness which is phenomenal)
But back to the ‘Axe, now I am getting regular tweets from KAXE folks and recently had a chance to play the Saturday night Trivia show Green Cheese, via facebook. This is a station that PIONEERED web streaming of broadcasts and was “two way” radio before that became a hip tagline. They are truly interconnected with their audience and it is a thing of beauty.
And for the record, although I am not disgruntled, I am a former staffer there but I don’t have an axe to grind, ba dump bump.
And regardless of anything else I agree with Craig’s letter. I think of my grandpa sitting at his kitchen table, tying flies and providing a running commentary of rants AGAINST whatever Lew was saying and that is, for me, the epitome of what local radio should be. Something that your gonna listen to and be engaged with even if you never quite agree.
El Diablo- Radio K and the Current cannot make a profit. Neither can KUMD or KAXE. They are by their inherent non-profit nature, not commercial ventures. They operate on direct listener support, underwriting, grants and subsidies. I don’t think a commercial station worth listening to has existed since the early 70s.
REV 105 in Mpls was great while it lasted. The program director Kevin Cole is now at the helm of KEXP in Seattle. Awesome station also listener supported.
I miss Duke Skorich’s talk show on various local stations, most recently KUWS. That was local talk at its best. Sure, Duke ranted and railed, but he took all calls, and really debated the issues with those who disagreed with him. I listened to Lew Latto a few times, but he bored the hell out of me. but I do agree with Craig’s fundamental point about local talk radio and its relevance to the fabric of a community. And boring as Lew was, Brad Bennett is far worse.
Duke started off on KUWS being intensely local. By the time he called it quits a few years later, he was hardly talking about local issues at all. The last year or so I stopped listening to him much because it was all national stuff. Even worse, he stopped doing Say Anything. That was the best part of the show.
Say Anything was great, definitely the best part of the show! I’m sure the powers-that-be at KUWS were always peeing in their pants, though, wondering what was going to come out of people’s mouths next. I am listening to Russ Stewart and Barb Olsen on KDAL AM (8-10 am Sat. mornings) and they’re really good — but they are no Duke & Patty at their peak.
