Found: Bike in Duluth’s East Hillside
Found a Marin bike by my house. Pretty sure it was stolen and ditched. Has a couple of distinguishing characteristics. See Craigslist ad.
Found: Eyeglasses on Wisconsin Point
I found a pair of eyeglasses on Wisconsin Point on Sunday, Sept. 11, along the shore near parking lot 1. I hung them on the sign at the parking lot, so if you’re looking for them they’re probably still there.

Found: Golden Retriever
1-to-2-year-old Golden Retriever with blue handkerchief found at 16th Avenue East and Jefferson Street in Duluth this morning with no tags, looking scared and hungry. Ate three bowls of dog food. Anyone know the owner?
Tour the US Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw
A year or so ago I was allowed access to the new Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw while it was on dry dock at Fraser Shipyards. At the time it was recieving an upgrade to the propellar system. They were happy to give me access and this tour gets alot of hits from all over the country. As crew members get notified they will be transfered to this vessel a lot of them check out the tour to see thier new home for the next few years. Take a tour yourself!
Enventis utility covers in Jefferson neighborhood

Yeah, I’m excited for the extra special cable beneath this seemingly innocuous cover.
Duluth Garbage Bins
OK, so what’s the deal? There are no garbage bins anywhere! I want to pick up after my dog, but I end up walking blocks and blocks carrying a bag of … you know.
I’ve just come from Chicago, where garbage is a city service (never mind the pay for play aspect of this city service). And garbage bins are everywhere. One every block on the major streets. And no one worries about throwing garbage into someone else’s bin, because it’s all covered.
As an aside, I used to live two doors down from Blagojevich. I took extra happy pride in throwing those nasty little bags into his bins.
Are there no curbing laws in Duluth?
Controversy!
With the notable exceptions of the PDD Grammar Post and the PDD Troll Zone, what has been the most controversial post on PDD?
Stolen Bass Guitar
Folks, please be on the lookout for a bass guitar that was taken during a burglary at my home recently. This bass is a viola-type, hollow body (think Paul McCartney, Hofner-type bass) painted green with a small spot on the back that was sanded down to the original wood. It was in a soft gig bag. I don’t have a picture, unfortunately, but really you can’t miss this if you see it. Very high sentimental value. If you happen to see it around please call the Duluth Police Department, or call me at 341-8175.
Anybody else notice a high amount of burglaries in Duluth lately? It seems that a lot of people I tell about this has a similar story of being burglarized recently.
Thanks,
Tony Derrick
Duluth apartment licensing inspection
Is it usual, or even legal, for a landlord to demand that all the tenants leave the apartment building while it is being inspected for licensing? We got the written notice for an inspection in a week and then the landlord tells us face to face “don’t be here while the inspectors are here.” Weird?
FYI.
My wife found this info at four news sources:

PARSONS, Tenn. (WVLT) — U.S. Marshals arrested a convicted sex offender in Minnesota wanted for questioning in connection with the Holly Bobo’s disappearance. Marshals found 43-year-old [name excluded just to be safe — innocent until proven guilty, etc.] in Duluth, Minnesota Thursday at his girlfriend’s house.
…
We can’t find any reference at DNT or local TV websites? FYI, in any case.

The Strib’s latest take on Duluth
This might be old news, but did anyone see this lovely article in the Star Tribune (Newspaper of the Twin Cities) about Duluth by Curt Brown? He’s going for Duluth beyond the lakefront, and ends up at a Burrito Union cribbage tournament.
What do you think? Did he unearth the “real Duluth”? Or just pack down further the existing path off the beaten Lakewalk path?
Watch for shady magazine sales kids
Not that I distrust the kids totally, but there are some youth in Duluth going door to door. They are collecting ‘points’ toward a trip and award to sell subscriptions to magazines. But along the way, the young man who came to my door asked to come in for a writing surface. When the table in the entry wasn’t enough, he asked to come in further for a counter or dining table. Then he asked for some bottled water. All of this made me increasingly uncomfortable. After he left, I called the phone number on the receipt and Googled the name of the company. Upshot is, they are tagged by the Better Business Bureau for not refunding money and not delivering product. Buyer beware.
One more reason to love this town
The other evening I saw three guys mowing the grass that the city has ignored on a median strip on Mesaba Avenue. Thank you guys! I go down First Avenue East every day and the tall grass that had not been mowed all summer made it impossible to see up-bound traffic. These three guys took matters into their own hands and believe me it did not go unnoticed. Thank you guys!
Duluth Schools Construction Tour
Duluth Public Schools just released a 53-page PDF (which takes a moment to load) titled “Duluth’s 21st Century Public Schools: Construction Tour, July 2011.” It includes updated construction photos of the district’s three new and six updated schools. Here’s a brief gallery for those too lazy to take on 53 pages.
Big boom on Saturday night?
Anyone know what the loud boom or explosion was on Saturday night at about 10:10 p.m.? We heard it out in Lakeside and thought it was a gunshot, but found out the next day that somebody also heard it out by Mcquade safe harbor, which is quite a ways from us.
Bed Bugs in Downtown Duluth?
Anyone know the story of what is going on in the building at 103 W. First St.? This is the building that is owned by Center City Housing, apartments on the top floors and Sammy’s Pizza on the main floor along with offices. For the past week there have been trucks parked outside doing some kind of “abatement” work. The workers have been bringing large stainless steel containers in and out of the building. I heard a rumor tonight that there was an infestation of bed bugs in the building and a company was there trying to eradicate the bugs. It was all very mysterious so just wondering about it.
