Join us as she prepares for a sequel to her book and shares more stories of her travels to familiar historic sites on Minnesota Highway 61. Uncover lost bits of highway history and hear some of the history that she has found in the Duluth region.

Bone Appetit’s Last Temptation of Duluth
This Friday, at the Rex Bar in the Fitger’s Complex – roughly 60 hours from now, maybe more, depending on where SuddendEATH is – Bone Appetit will play its last show ever. Bone Appetit: Duluth’s Worst, then Sexiest, then Greatest Band, forever laid to rest after over a decade of service to you, the citizens of Duluth. As of last glance, there are 85 confirmed guests for this show, which [using mathematical extrapolation, as well as consulting my trick knee] means the room will be filled well beyond the fire marshal’s stated capacity.

Homegrown Schedule Changes
If you’re using the Homegrown Music Festival Field Guide to chart your course, please note the following changes:
Wednesday, May 5 – Although it’s referred to as “Lakewalk Night,” you might not want to use the Lakewalk to get from the Canal Park venues to Fitger’s or vice versa. The part of the Lakewalk between Endion Depot and Fitger’s will be closed to allow workers to repave it. The Homegrown steering committee didn’t see that coming.
Thursday, May 6 – The Fractals are not playing at the Brewhouse at 11 p.m. The What Four will be playing. These bands were switched after the schedule was printed.
Friday, May 7 – Dead Man Winter had to cancel its gig. Consequently, the Keep Aways will be playing at 10 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. at Twins Bar.
Jeffrey James O’Laughlin and Ashley Northey have switched slots for Friday night. So O’Laughlin will be playing at Sir Benedict’s Tavern on the Lake at 11 p.m. and Northey will be playing at Carmody Irish Pub at 10:15. Also, Northey has been playing with a band lately, and that band has a name now — the Sweet Virginias.
As referenced above, the What Four is not playing at Roscoe’s Pioneer Bar at 11 p.m. on Friday. The Fractals have moved to that slot.
The Penetration of Homegrown
Denied or not, you’ll see me play a short set Tuesday night at Chester Creek Cafe/At Sara’s Table. A friend of mine who is playing there tonight (Rory James) has decided to give up some time from his Homegrown slot to allow a few musicians to, well, “get up there and show their stuff.” Come see my roommate, Avery (Slave Dog) and I get a little ‘experimental’. Hahahahahaha. And no, this penetration will NOT be a safe procedure 😉

Last Chance Bikers: Show Us Your Routes!
Monday, May 3, and Tuesday, May 4, are your last opportunities to show us how bicycling can be improved in your area! Fit City Duluth and the Metropolitan Interstate Council are working together to learn about the habits of bikers in Duluth. At these meetings you will be asked where you currently bike, where you would bike if it was easier, where bike racks should go, and other biking issues, and you will learn why this information is important for Duluth.
Food will be provided! Both meetings start at 6pm:
- May 3 – Central Hillside Community Center (12 E 4th St)
- May 4 – Portman Community Center (4601 McCulloch St)
2010 Homegrown Tags (UPDATED)
Once again, Homegrown has begun, and once again, all you numbskulls will be out there flashing your fancy digicams and/or tapping at your mobile devices, cataloging all the craziness as it happens. And as always, it’s important to properly tag your stuff so that everyone else knows that it exists.

Join students from five colleges in solidarity with UMD students at Monday march/rally
Racism in Minnesota? Really? In the wake of a Facebook scandal that has rocked the UMD community, students and community members will join together on Monday, May 3, as a united community standing together against all forms of racism. UMD students will make a 4-mile march beginning at 10 a.m. at the Washington Center and ending at Kirby Plaza, UMD.

Local Talent Supporting Local Community
Sunday, May 2, University of Minnesota Duluth students and faculty will be giving from the arts. Starting at 7 PM, live vocal and instrumental performances will be filling the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center to benefit the many important programs of CHUM (Churches United in Ministry) and Sacred Heart. Accompanying the jazz and classical stylings of some of UMD’s most talented musicians will be a silent auction of original art pieces as well as a dessert and beverage bar bringing together some of the most delicious gifts the Duluth community has to offer.
Showing your support is as simple as showing up, but any monetary donations will also be greatly appreciated. So at 7 PM, May 2, bring all your friends and family to 201 W. Fourth St. and feel free to dance!
Everybody Outside! at Morgan Park on Saturday, May 1
If you’re looking for a pre- or post-Leif Erickson destination, or you’re looking for an alternate event for the day, bring the kids to the west side this Saturday between noon and 5 p.m. for Everybody Outside at Morgan Park.
A class group from UMD is putting this event on to offer outdoor recreation opportunities to kids from the whole Twin Ports area but kids in West Duluth specifically. We’ll have camping skills activities, birding by Lake Superior Zoo, disc golf, fishing skills with MinnAqua, skateboarding demos by Damage Boardshop, and slacklining and a bouldering wall to get kids active and outdoors. All activities are free and we’ll be having raffles and food concessions (with proceeds going to the Morgan Park Playground Fund). See you Saturday!

Benefit Rummage Sale at YMCA

We’re getting rid of a year’s worth of lost and found, plus donations from the community.
Proceeds benefit our Strong Kids Campaign which raises money for all of our financial assistance programs. Did you even know the Y offers financial assistance? We do! For memberships, programs and summer camp. Things like this rummage sale, along with private donations, are our funding sources.
Dead Man’s Cell Phone closing night
Join Renegade Theater Company, Lori Pietsch State Farm, and the cast and crew of Dead Man’s Cell Phone for a closing night celebration with Blackwater!
The party, which will take place on Saturday, May 1, from 6-8 pm in the back section of Blackwater, will feature hors d’oeuvres provided by the Blackwater Lounge. There will be a cash bar and a chance to mingle with the cast before seeing them perform!
