The elusive progressive/art rockers Canine Heart Sounds will be joined with the pontoon rock of Dirty Horse and the 4/4 time signatures of 4 on the Floor at R.T. Quinlan’s Saloon on Saturday, July 24. Music starts at 10 p.m. and there will be a $3 cover. Rock!

Last call for Expedition Train!

Put on your best dress khakis and hiking boots for the Duluth Art Institute Expedition Train! Inspired by the National Geographic Greatest Portraits exhibit currently on view, the Duluth Art Institute is sending visitors on assignment into the wilds of Duluth.

Your adventure begins at the Depot train station where you’ll enjoy live music by local favorites Tryke and two free drink tickets. This is also the last chance to view the Smithsonian exhibit “In Focus: National Geographic Greatest Portraits” for free.  The train will depart the Depot station at 10pm and bring explorers deep into Duluth’s unexplored backcountry (if by backcountry you mean Emily’s Eatery to hear music by Kip Jones).

You’ll be given a number of adventure assignments during your trip, so choose your fellow traveling partners well! The train will return home by 1 am. The ticket price includes music, train ride, viewing of the Smithsonian show, and drink tickets.

Art Exhibit and Show at the Encounter

There is a fantastic showing of arts on Saturday, July 10, at the Encounter, being put on by Nate Adelson.

Art from Duluthians will be displayed starting at 3pm in a gallery upstairs at the Encounter for free. There is a wide array of fine arts as well as photography being shown. There is also a show happening in the red room starting at 6pm that will be $3, featuring 6 bands.

Exhibit by writer/photographer Brenda Paro opens Friday

Duluth writer and photographer Brenda Paro is presenting new work at the Washington Gallery beginning Friday, July 9. Subtle Cargoes is an exhibit of complex photographic collages paired with poetry, presented using a variety of printing techniques and materials.

The opening reception takes place Friday, July 9 from 6 to 8 pm at Washington Gallery; the exhibit will also be open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm (or by appointment) through July 25. July 1 Art Opening at Beaners Central

New Paintings by Ed Newman at Beaner’s Central
The Many Faces of Ennyman

Original paintings by Ed Newman will be on display at Beaner’s Central in Spirit Valley during the month of July. The public is invited to an art opening July 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. The title of the event will be The Many Faces of Ennyman.

The opening will include live music by Perfectini, a jazz duet comprised of Robert Linnemann on sax with Darin Bergsven, electric guitar, their soothing sounds offering hints of Miles and Wes Montgomery or Billy Bernard. An original film showing the Act of Creation will also be shown during the opening with portions of the soundtrack being original contributions from John Heino of Centerville All Stars fame.
