International Passive House Day – UMD Bagley Classroom Building Tour

Imagine only needing a hair dryer or a few candles to heat a building in Minnesota!  This is the Passive House approach which uses simple, low-tech solutions like super-insulation, rigorous air sealing, and high-performance windows to reduce a building’s total source energy consumption by 90%. Over 20,000 Passive House buildings have been built worldwide and the Bagley Classroom at UMD follows this standard.

Several Passive House buildings in Minnesota will be open for the International Passive House Day tours. See the link below for a database of projects. The UMD Bagley Classroom at 703 Oakland Circle in Duluth will be open for free tours every hour between 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, Nov. 13.

If you’ve got fabulous Halloween photos, it’s Halloween banner time. But hurry, ‘cuz I shoulda had this call out a couple weeks ago. We’ll start putting the Halloween banners up as soon as we get enough to rotate.

Spirit Lake Poetry Series reading coming up

On November 13, Jude Nutter and Thomas R. Smith will read at Somers Lounge, CSS, for free.  7:30 pm.

Jude won last year’s MN Book Award in poetry with a terrific book called I Wish I Had a Heart Like Yours, Walt Whitman. She was raised on the grounds of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany, and the poems in this book concern some of that experience.

Also reading is Thomas R. Smith, who has a brand new book from Red Dragonfly Press called The Foot of the Rainbow.  Don’t miss this reading — it’ll be great.  Oh, and Spirit Lake now has a website: spiritlakepoetry.wordpress.com.

“Tradition”: Fiddler on the Roof, Jr. at the Duluth Playhouse

I had the opportunity to attend a performance of this charming production on opening night.  A talented group of young actors and a kid-friendly run time (just over an hour) truly make this an event for the entire family (not to mention a great way to introduce a younger generation to a well-loved musical!).

Hail of bullets:

  • What: Fiddler on the Roof, Jr.
  • Where: The Duluth Playhouse
  • When: October 22-31 (Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 1 and 4 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m).

The Infamous Dr. Thunder paints a mural on the back door of Who’s Bar in Superior

Erik Pearson put down the gray base today for a mural over Who’s Bar’s back door. You wouldn’t believe how frequently used that door is, and how ignored the sign on the inside instructing people to knock before exiting went. Fortunately, Pearson’s quick hands managed to prevent any disasters.

Last week he painted the mural below, which is the back door of an unoccupied space between Who’s Bar and the Palace Bar. Go Dr. Thunder! Go!

Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a downward spiral filled with sex, violence, and evil jazz music.
