Postcard from Enger Tower
This undated postcard, published by Erickson Post Cards & Souvenirs, shows the five-story lookout tower at Duluth’s Enger Park circa the early 1970s.
Thanks to Mean Larry for pointing out that Darling Observatory is in the photo (circled in the cropped version of the image below). Initially this post speculated the photo was shot in the late 1970s, but the observatory was torn down in 1972.
Construction of Enger Tower was completed in 1939. The memorial building was financed by money the late furniture-store owner Bert Enger left in his will for the project. Crown Prince Olav of Norway dedicated the tower.
Built of native bluestone, the octagonal structure has a winding staircase inside, leading to panoramic views of the city.
The caption on the back of the postcard reads:
Enger Memorial Tower, 583 feet above lake level, overlooking Duluth-Superior Harbor. The tower’s beacon light is visible for 35 miles at night.
