Snow Sculpture
A snow sculpture at the corner of 21st Avenue East and Fourth Street depicts an angel with her arms around weeping children.
I was so moved that I had to pull over. Another bystander said this house does a snow sculpture every year but not usually one that makes so many want to stop and take a picture.
I also choked back tears as I drove past this on 21st Ave. E. today.

Yep, Harry Welty is well known for doing a snow sculpture every year. I know he had a big Trojan horse one year. He did one of Obama with the world in his hands a few years ago. He usually creates fun things — this year’s is certainly a bit out of the ordinary in that it is so touching and emotional.
I saw him out there sometime after 10 p.m. Friday. There were some lanterns lit in the yard, and he was standing on the sidewalk looking back at the house; it seemed like he was planning what to do. Perhaps the sculpture will light up at night? Also, I’m surprised there was enough snow because there didn’t seem to be that much on the ground at the time. Does he haul it in?
I’ve seen Dr. Who. I’ve seen Dr. Who.
Mr. Welty’s snow sculptures are one of my favorite parts of living in my neighborhood. This one is so sad.
I love this. This house has something fun every year, this warms my heart. Duluth is a great city. Love and Light…

Harry Welty lives near me. As I was driving home last night, I noticed the ice sculpture with candles on it. I was so moved, it was quite lovely. I love his ice sculptures, they are always au courant. And he is a good neighbor.
Welty’s work is much more productive than any comment, article or news story I have seen regarding this tragedy.
He chose one of the images that haunted me as the news leaked out Friday.

There was a group of school kids there yesterday after school, paying homage to their fallen comrades in Newtown. It’s most lovely at night, when the candles are lit.

Every day I walk by it, every day someone has left something there…
