Where in Duluth – Flashback Edition

Girl on her Bike, Duluth, 1977. By Tom Arndt from his book Home.

Now, I don’t actually know where in Duluth this was taken, but I’d like to know so I can go re-shoot it. The buildings in the background look distinct enough that I hope someone here recognizes them if they are still standing.

I am a little young for this but I can use some logical deduction.

The layout of the land tells me that it is probably somewhere in west Duluth, due to the relatively flat ground. There are not a lot of areas other than out west that are flat.

The apartment in the background would seem to indicate that it is one of the more industrial areas, likely Morgan Park but it could be Gary as well. Then again, it could just as easily be in the Raliegh St area or over by Ramsey St where the newer townhomes are.

I grew up in the Ramsey Street neighborhood and I can vouch that it’s nowhere around there.

Notice that what at first looks like a street behind her is actually a parking lot. That might be a good clue.

Might it be the old (Harborview) projects at the top of the hill? It’s all been torn down and rejuvenated with something based on my last visit through there.

I do believe it is the former Copeland Community Center as suggested by the person above me. It was ripped down and rebuilt but it was very unusual construction for Duluth. Always reminded me of Los Angeles or somewhere west.

I was going to suggest the airbase housing off of Arrowhead road?

Trees are too mature for K-Part. West end, off 3rd street and 29th(?) Ave maybe. Was there an Amoco there? And an IGA across the street?

Are you sure that’s a girl? It kind of looks like the golf instructor out at Lester Park.

All I know about this picture is I would not f*** with that girl.

It could be the small hotel out in Gary. It use to be called the Starlight Motel, I believe.

It looks like a building on the corner of Eighth Street and 57th Avenue West.

The corner of Eighth Street and 57th Avenue West is where the former 8th Street Market is/was. I don’t think that’s what the photo above depicts. Here’s a modern day (Sept. 21, 2010 to be precise) photo of the former market.

There are some slight similarities with the look of the building and the roadside parking layout, but the way the avenues angle against the streets appears to be pretty different in the two photos — unless the perspective of the old photo is throwing me off.

Our friend Grace and her son used to live in that corner apartment!
