Weird
Y2K is so nine years ago
I am looking forward to the movie “2012” coming out next month. I’m glad they didn’t wait until 2012 to release the movie, cause, you know.
Someone has compiled a list of 22 possible ways for the earth to end in a couple years. My favorites are “Rise of the Machines” and “Time Travel Error.”

While watching the trailer for the movie, I noticed they’re not forgetting to save the giraffes, not something I would have put on my short list to save.
I invite you to consider:
1. What do you think is the most likely way for earth to meet its end in two years?
2. What stupid thing would you try to save if you got a seat on a secret government ship?

Terror Train 2009 Duluth
This biennial Halloween event normally sells out. I can confirm it is a ghoulish good time, even though I missed the train going back to Duluth and was stuck in Two Harbors for the night. I guess Joe Dirt was a little too drunk to hear the last three “All Aboard” calls. That must have been about the time I was in the basement of the Legion doing shots from the mystery bag for a buck. HELIPHINO IV!

Our next festival is this Friday, Oct 2! If you’re heading this direction or looking for something interesting to do, stop on by! A Whisper in the Noise and Tim Kaiser will perform later in the evening, while Logan “logain” Erickson will give a circuit bending demo and performance earlier on. Bruce Nelson, who hasn’t performed in over 10 years, opens the show (for those of us crusty old folks, he’s the grizzled guy who used to run the open stage at Quinlans in the early 90’s where many cut their performing teeth).

Ten years later, I wonder if anyone noticed that instead of using an image of a dreadlocked rastafarian for this reggae concert ad we just clipped a bunch of clothespins on Barrett.
Happy Estimated Tax Day!
Today is one of four days of reckoning for the self-employed among us. I thought it was funny that these were the only stamps I had left on the sheet to put on my federal and state estimated payments.
Slivovitz Festival Saturday
Hello Duluthians,
Hope you don’t mind the intrusion from Chicago (from a former Iron Ranger, at least), but you all should know about the Slivovitz Festival at Earthwood Inn on Highway 61 just south of Two Harbors on Saturday, Aug. 29. A day-long good time featuring Eastern Europe’s finest adult beverage, Slivovitz – which is a plum brandy. Delicious and high octane.
Also, my band is playing at 4:30 if you want to hear some brassy, balkan style music.

Waiter? There’s a drink in my brain.
you have a new place to get your drink on when you visit the twin cities.

A legendary north Minneapolis dive bar has risen from the dead.
When one of the Twin Cities’ most notorious bars, Stand Up Frank’s, closed earlier this year, I wouldn’t have believed in a million years it would be reopened and reimagined as something called Donny Dirk’s Zombie Den. Real zombies could dig themselves out of the ground and eat my brains before that would happen, because that would be crazy. Read the rest.
Hells Angels FAQ
My favorite question on the Hells Angels Web Site FAQ page: “Shouldn’t there be an apostrophe in Hells Angels?” I don’t think the answer is correct, but, uh, do you wanna tell ’em?
Starving Artist Barter??
Dear Duluthians,
You might have seen some of my art at Bohemia Arts, and if not, please do come see it, because if you like it: I am hoping to trade existing paintings, commissions, and/or mural work for a) a decent bike b) a canoe in working order c) a kayak that floats and/or d) misc hauling equipment and useful accessories for said objects. Or other awesome stuff to trade for might be considered too…
Thank you kindly,
maria sippola

USOs: Unidentified stationary objects
Can anyone help me figure out what exactly this might be? I was thinking of taking a bike ride from Duluth to Grand Rapids avoiding Hwy 2 and thought this road might be nice, but this “thing” has me puzzled. There’s another one north west a few miles…

Remember the house
on Dunedin Ave. that had all those styrofoam tombstones in the yard at Halloween? Well, we don’t do that anymore. But we did collect all those punny names and epitaphs and put them together on a website that I’d like to share with you. NameThatTomb.com

Tang Cocktail?
The Duluth Art Institute is hosting a “Space Train” on July 31. There will be music by Tangier 57, a chance to look at stars with telescopes, as well as food and drink. (Get your tickets here.)

To make it really special I would like to figure out a special Tang cocktail to serve – any ideas?
