Deep Connections: UMD Art & Design Faculty Biennial
The University of Minnesota Duluth’s Art & Design Faculty Biennial opened Oct. 28 and remains on display through Feb. 27 in the Tweed Museum of Art. The exhibit highlights shared human experiences and shared creative experiences.
The biennial’s intention is to foster connections and build community and camaraderie. The works include painting, drawing, sculpture, digital media, printmaking and graphic design. (more…)
The Book of the North: Part 1
The Book of the North is a collaborative book-making project using premodern techniques to experience how the information technologies of the past bind together communities and ecologies, and create a vision for a more sustainable future.
The project is being led by Dr. Krista Sue-Lo Twu, University of Minnesota Imagine Arts, Humanities, and Design chair. The process can be followed through various social medica platforms.
Childhood memories lead to future inspirations
Etta Glinsek is a junior at the University of Minnesota Duluth majoring in environment sustainability and geography and minoring in environment and outdoor education. She is working toward graduating in spring 2026 and a career in the environmental field.
This semester, Glinsek is taking the class Nature Interpretation. Part of the coursework is to create a plot study, finding an area where the student can study and observe nature. Glinsek has chosen an area in Bagley Nature Area near a stream in hopes that it will create a more diverse environment. Her goal is to help preserve the environment and find a job that will allow her to do it.
John F. Kennedy’s 1963 Duluth Speech
Sixty years ago today — Sept. 24, 1963 — President John F. Kennedy spoke in Duluth during the Northern Great Lakes Region Land and People Conference. The event was held in the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Physical Education Building. (more…)

Sculptor Nick Legeros recently completed a bronze sculpture of Champ the Bulldog, mascot of the University of Minnesota Duluth. The statue was installed on Aug. 8 near the walkway in front of the Darland Administration Building.

The Alworth Incident
Introduction: UMD’s Alworth Hall was built in 1974. It was rebuilt in 2011 in the wake of the Alworth Incident which claimed the life of Desiree Zontal, Dean of the Research Instrumentation Laboratory. Her graduate student Ward Hind, and her husband Horace Zontal, Associate Dean of the Physics Department, both survived. Mr. Hind, the jealous saboteur, is incarcerated in Oak Park Heights in a cell made of the anomalously-irradiated bricks of the lab. In these essays, we put a human face on the Incident, although in the case of Mr. Hind, this is, ironically, impossible.

June of ’71: UMD’s medical school gets initial accreditation
The University of Minnesota Duluth’s medical school took its first step toward academic accreditation 50 years ago. The June 30, 1971 Duluth Herald reported that Dr. Robert E. Carter, medical school dean, announced a letter of “reasonable assurance of academic accreditation” had been received from the Joint Liaison Committee on Accreditation of the American Medical Association Council on Education and the American Association of Medical Colleges. UMD’s literary magazine Roaring Muse is a student-led magazine that was started in 1997 by UMD’s Literary Guild. Often including poetry, prose, and artwork, and edited by students, Roaring Muse sought to highlight the great work by UMD’s community, and at one point solicited submissions from community members outside the campus. Since its beginnings in ’97, the magazine has been published on and off and is currently back up and running. (more…)

The UMD Bulldogs hockey season came to an end last night with a 3-2 loss in overtime to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Before it was over, Sam Ali had to report on the game without using ESPN footage. He figured it out.
Highlight Video: NCAA Men’s Hockey Regional – UMD vs. UND
The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs and the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks redefined what it means to pull an all-nighter in college. Last night’s regional hockey tournament final at Sheels Arena in Fargo was the longest game in NCAA playoff history.
Freshman forward Luke Mylymok scored at 2:13 of the fifth overtime to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 victory and a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four in Pittsburgh.

Highlights: UMD Choir and Vocal Jazz Fall 2020 Concert

Singers at the University of Minnesota Duluth overcame great odds this semester during the COVID-19 pandemic. They wore masks and rehearsed online, outdoors and in large lecture halls, ultimately sharing their musical talents in a virtual concert on Nov. 13. Some highlights are in the clip above.
An audience of more than 150 joined together on Zoom to hear the University Singers, Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers, Lake Effect and Chill Factor perform on location in Weber Music Hall, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, and around Duluth and the UMD Campus.

Selective Focus: Lend a Paw Virtual Exhibit
UMD’s Senior Design Studio II class has created a virtual gallery to show their work, and is using the opportunity to raise money for the Douglas County Humane Society. The exhibit, online store and Go Fund Me page will be active until May 5. Each piece in the exhibition is inspired by the story of a rescue pet. Visitors can move around the inside and outside of the gallery space to look at the art, read the stories and interact with the objects in the display. The class is led by UMD Department of Art & Design Assistant Professor David Short, and one of the organizers, Jack Schneewind, fills us in on how the exhibit came together, and what the class hoped to achieve with the project.
