Hacienda del Sol closed?

Seeing the House of Donuts post makes me wonder … what’s going on with the Hacienda del Sol?

Small Visitors

Some pals are visiting from Seattle next week. Their kids are 3 and 6, I think. We don’t have kids, so we’re not sure what amuses them. What are some cool Duluth things we could do that would be interesting to both kids and grownups? I’m thinking Hartley Nature Center, throwing rocks into the lake, maybe the harbor tour. What else might delight them?

Business Facebook without Personal Facebook

I’m trying to get an answer to this question, and am finding conflicting answers. Can one establish a business presence on “The Facebook” without have it tied back to a specific user? For example, is the corporate Target Facebook page associated with a specific user?

Looking for WIGL Jingles

WIGL radio was a daytime Top-40 music station covering the Duluth-Superior market from 1961 to 1964. I am a collector of radio jingles, and have many from WEBC and a couple of early WAKX ones. However, WIGL has been elusive. I e-mailed Lew Latto about it (who owned the station for a while), and he regretfully replied that he was unable to help me. I know some people taped the radio back then (I did) — maybe there’s an aircheck out there with a WIGL jingle or two.  I remember they had purple promo signs on the backs of the city buses during that era, and their jingles always ended with “Wiggle!!!” Posting this in case somebody is unknowingly sitting on a piece of Duluth-Superior broadcasting history.

Not-Your-Mama’s Crafter?

Does anyone out there have the aesthetic eye to craft that I describe as “roller derby chicks who knit and weld?” Wanna learn? Let’s make a scene! The revolution will be crafted!

What’s with all the Skeeters?!

Has anybody else being driven crazy by all the mosquitoes in Duluth the past week?! Seriously, it’s like Alaska out there. I can’t work in the yard without getting drained. I can’t ever remember it being this bad. Theories? (Sustained west winds? Moth spraying killed all the dragonflies? Hurricane Irene sucking them all down from northern Canada?)

Cinematic Inquiry

I am working on a film project that uses a variety of sources — DV Tape, CGI, Photoshop, etc. I want to try to put the DV images which are 720×540 on part of the screen and something else on the other part because I want the film to end up as 16:9 and all the DV is 4:3.

I have been all through all kinds of Lynda.com etc. and can’t find the answer to this. I am including a picture to show where I am trying to go. (more…)

Free Bees

My wife and I are trying to paint the house this year and have discovered a substantial carpenter bee nesting area under the eve. We don’t want to have them exterminated because we love these nice bees. The hive is inside the sofet and are accessible to the right bee charmer.

Can anyone recommend a bee keeper who wants to relocate these pleasant bees?

Bingo!

Someone in PDDland has to know the best place in town to get my bingo on. Help me out here.

Duluth Wedding Officiants

Nikki and I are finally shaking off the procrastination and getting down to planning our wedding (late)  and looking for an officiant!  If anyone knows, or has any recommendations for an officiant, we’d love to hear them!  The ceremony is being held in Leif Erikson Park this September and we’re looking for someone who’s either non-denominational or generally open-minded Christian.  We’ve emailed a few people from the various directory websites but would be much more comfortable with first-hand experience or recommendations.

What do the yellow flags mean at Park Point beach accesses?

We saw them at Tot Lot and the firehall on Park Point. Riptide? E. coli? What?

AdventureDuluth.com?

I was out walking the old DWP railbed south of the tunnel today when I saw a blue bumper sticker for adventureduluth.com stuck on the back of a stop sign. I tried to visit the site, but it no longer exists. Anyone know anything about adventureduluth.com and what it was?

Downtown Duluth Office Space

Help!

I am looking to relocate my small office to another spot downtown.  Somewhere in the area of Lake Avenue a few blocks east or west would be great.  Any good ideas?  I’m not super picky, but want some good light and clean, etc.  Currently spending about $200 a month so I am also hoping to stay in that range.

Completely hypothetical question about drinking on the beach

July 4th weekend, two couples are sitting at the beach around mid afternoon watching their kids play in the sand.  They are at the “s” curve beach at Park Point, approx 100 yards to the right of the sidewalk.  They are talking quietly, drinking a few beers from cans.  Each open beer is wrapped in a can “coolie” or whatever you call them.  Each beer can is immediately put back in the small cooler when emptied.

What are the chances that a community officer (or whoever patrols the beaches) will come up and hassle them?

Cheapest Tap Beer in Duluth

I’m a poor college kid, where can I go to get the cheapest tap beer in town and on what nights? Overall, what is the cheapest bar that still has a fun, non-sketchy crowd?

Vietnamese New Year in Duluth

Am I right in thinking that there’s a Vietnamese New Year celebration in Duluth last week, this week or next week?

Egg coffee

Does anyone know how to make egg coffee and is it really that much better than “regular” coffee? Of course we have great coffee purveyors today, but I was just wondering about the mystique behind this Norwegian brew.

Greysolon Plaza elevator death in 1979 — fact or urban legend?

A woman I know from my hometown is an alumnus of UMD, and said that while she was in school UMD had the same overcrowding problem that it has now. Instead of housing students at Edgewater, they housed them at the Greysolon Plaza. She also said that there was an elevator accident in which some UMD students were killed. I can’t find this information anywhere online, can anyone confirm that this actually happened?

Duluth Christmas Tree Disposal

It’s about that time to take down the tree and we are looking for a place to dispose of it. Does anyone know of any organizations or businesses that aid in this? Burning isn’t an option.

Where’s the best place to watch the Christmas City of the North Parade?

Where’s the best place to watch the Christmas City of the North Parade? I usually watch it from home, in front of the fire, on TV, with a hot toddy. You?

Thanksgiving 2010

What is open in Duluth on Thanksgiving? We used to travel to the TC to go to Dunn Bros. for coffee (they were open until noon), reading the Black Friday ads, then down to a casino for a magnificent dinner buffet.

Where can I snag some coffee and dinner in Duluth on this most Thankful of Days?

Foreign Language

Does anyone know of any foreign language classes available for children? My son is 3 and we would like to start him in French. Looking for a school or class or tutor (or French Grandmother?) to help him start learning. They learn so fast at this age and I’d rather not wait 10 years since it will be harder. We’re in Superior, but will drive to Duluth or surrounding area. Thanks!

Where do I buy celestial binoculars in Duluth?

Please don’t say Wal-Mart.

Duluth’s Goat Hill Neighborhood

Does anyone know about the history of West Duluth’s “Goat Hill” area or how it got that name?

Park Point Amusement Park

My mom, who was born in Duluth in 1935, was re-telling me stories about the amusement park at the end of Park Point. She recalled bumper cars (she called them “dodge-em carts”), a penny arcade, a carousel, spinning swings, a candy shop (Fritz’s) and various other amusements. I know the canopy for the carousel is in the Sports Garden, but I have never seen any pictures of this park and don’t know if the topic has been addressed here. Just wondering if anyone has any insight as to whether my mom’s recollections are accurate.
