Eighth Birthday Party Announcement and Other PDD-related Matters
Next Wednesday, June 29, is Perfect Duluth Day’s eighth birthday. As usual, we are having a little get-together, and as usual we are inviting you all, as frightening as that might seem.
So swing on by the Burrito Union next Wednesday in the vague window of 8:30 to 10 p.m. or so. There will be no program or live music or plan to get people drunk and sell them condos; it’s just our annual opportunity to meet in person and shoot the breeze with the folks who put the P in our double-D.
In addition, yours truly will be a guest on “The Local” with Christine Dean next week, celebrating PDD’s birthday by playing songs with “Duluth” in the lyrics or title. That’s Wednesday, June 29, 5 p.m., on 103.3 FM KUMD.
By the way, we should probably let you all know what’s up with some of the technical weirdness PDD intermittently experienced in recent weeks. Here are the boring details:

The Chronicle Premiere

Duluth Internet Service Providers
I’m moving and need to set up Internet service this week. I don’t want a cable T.V. package, just solid, locally-provided Internet service. I am a telecommuter, so add extra emphasis on “solid.” I am looking for recommendations with the minor caveat that the ISP must also exceed the customer “service” provided by the large chains. Thanks!

Looking for something free to do with your kids this summer? The Zinema 2 will be showing Carl Sagan’s series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage every Saturday at 11 a.m., June 4 to August 27. The show is a wonderful chance to be exposed to grand scientific ideas and celebrate the pursuit of knowledge. Professors from UMD will host each episode, answering any questions and placing the show within a modern context. Admission is free.

Game Night at Collector’s Connection
Collector’s Connection used to be cramped, a place to stall while my wife wandered the mall. No longer! It’s become a destination. Last night, my wife and I played two games with a charming young couple of students and the Host, who did an excellent job of teaching us how to lose gracefully. The evening was free, though I bought a comic on the way out! (more…)
So geeky … yet so cool.
One day, Duluth’s Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low are at Geek Prom; four days later they are doing about the coolest thing imaginable, hanging out with Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant. Perhaps the line between geeky and cool has now been blurred beyond all recognition.
Air Supply Air Jam
The winner of the Air Supply Air Jam tonight at Geek Prom will win an autographed photo of Duluth’s Crystal Pelkey with Australian soft-rock duo Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock — Air freakin’ Supply.
Here’s the list of songs available for competitive lip synch tonight, in case you need to do some last-minute reheasing:
All out of Love
Lost in Love
Every Woman in the World
…Making Love Out of Nothing at All
Here I am
Without You
The One That You Love
Geek Prom is Saturday? Oh my goodness, whatever shall I wear?
If you’re all out of skin-tight superhero outfits and Star Wars paraphernalia, the folks at Geek Prom always say “whatever your mom lays out for you will be fine.”
But if you’re looking for a snappy new dress or a stylish Cardigan sweater, the fine folks at Ragstock are ready to sort you out.

Not only cool that it’s there, but damn if it isn’t interactive (after the jump)!
If someone has shared this before, I apologize … I’m kinda geeked up about it right now.

In Need of Rakes (again)

It’s that time of year where I’m in need of your retired steel-tined leaf rake. It cannot be plastic or bamboo- it must be steel. I chop the tines off for thumb piano keys and I need a whole lot of them for a music program/workshop I’m doing later in the spring. If your rake is missing all but one of it’s tines, I’ll still take it. You can contact me through yelling loudly or the internet thingy.

NerdNite VIII
You don’t need a GPS to find coolness. You do need it to try GeoCaching, one of the awesome events discussed at NerdNite VIII.
We loved all the talks, and we loved learning about a local creative resource. Kudos to all who planned it, and looking forward to the next one! I’d love to know about NerdNite as a movement — I learned a little at nerdnite.com, but want to learn more!
Duluth, Time Lapse
I don’t think I’ve seen this here yet, but it was on MPR’s Bob Collins’ Newscut blog today, scroll down past the more newsy stuff for the write-up.
Soon, we will never leave the house
