The Dexter Project
Dexter Ojeda is a 10-year-old Duluth boy who has a rare form of cancer that has no cure. One of the last items on Dexter’s bucket list is to star in a horror movie. Duluth’s Death Calm Studios and Dexter Ojeda’s family are determined to make Dexter’s wish come true, but they need help make it happen.
The Event of the Century: Standing Strong for Our Precious Water
The Standing Strong for Our Precious Water Art Exhibit and Concert Benefit for Standing Rock took place this past Friday at AICHO Galleries and was an amazing success. 400+ people showed up, raising a preliminary estimate of above $7,000 for Standing Rock water protectors and Honor the Earth (and that number continues to rise as more artwork is purchased over the course of the next month). The evening featured artwork by roughly 100 different visual artists, with musical performances by Annie Humphrey, Keith Secola, Jamie Labrador, #theindianheadband, Oshkii Giizhik Singers, Jake Vainio, and Richie Townsend. Tim Kaiser is releasing a Double seven-inch EP on vinyl this Spring and is doing an Indiegogo fundraiser. Why a double seven-inch and not a full-length LP? Because the music is done in such a way that you can play more than one of the four sides at the same time! Crazy! Big thank you to Lakefront Films for shooting the video.
Instead of work holiday party, seeking volunteering ideas
That awkward holiday work party — where no one really wants to go, but feels obligated. Well, we want to do something different this year and need ideas! Last year, instead of apps and drinks while milling about awkwardly, we got to do a blitz build with Habitat for Humanity. It was a blast, and it really brought us together, while helping a family in need. Do you have any ideas for this year? There would be roughly 16 of us, and we would want to be able to work together for the most part. We could take a half day to work, or even a couple hours. The tough thing would be to try to schedule this activity on a Monday-Friday, sometime around the holiday season. Any suggestions welcome!

Bring Lucy Home Benefit
Lucille June Moe-Brummer was born Dec. 13 in Scottsdale, Ariz., to Sandra Moe and Charlie Brummer. Unfortunately, life for Lucy was an uphill battle from day one. Lucy had a degenerative genetic disorder that caused her to have significant brain atrophy within the first two months of her life. This is an extremely devastating and rare condition which is not treatable. We were hoping to get Lucy back to Minnesota, hence why the benefit is called “Bring Lucy Home,” but unfortunately time was not on our side.
There are still many medical costs to take care so the benefit is still on! Come join us this Saturday, March 31, from 1-5 p.m. at Mr. D’s in West Duluth. There will be a silent auction, raffles, spaghetti feed, and an acoustic performance by Lake Avenue. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door the day of the event.

Life House will hold its second annual Hors D’Oeuvres that Open Doors event at the New Scenic Café on Tuesday, March 6, at 6 p.m.

Breaking Bike Swap news!
The United Way Bike Swap team has recently secured extra storage space for donated bikes before the sale. If you have bicycles in reasonable condition that you would like to donate to the United Way, you can bring them to Continental Ski & Bike (1305 E. First St. in Duluth) any weekday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. or weekends until 5 p.m. 100% of the profits from the sale of donated bikes goes to United Way of Greater Duluth, and when you donate you will get a form for tax purposes, a coupon from Continental, a warm thank you from United Way, and the satisfaction from having done a good deed.
(If you want to sell a bike, check-in is at Continental on Friday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m and Saturday April 16 from 8 to 9:45 a.m. If your bike sells you get 75% of the selling price and the remaining 25% goes to United Way.)

Join the UMD Outdoor Educators Club at this annual fundraiser, which is a fun rummage sale of outdoor gear! Bring your outdoor gear to sell during the drop off times, and/or come to the sale and take advantage of some great deals! Looking for a headliner for the PeaceLoveHaiti benefit!!!
On Friday, Oct. 22, Friday, there will be a benefit for PeaceLoveHaiti at R.T. Quinlan’s starting around 9 with all $5 of the cover going to the charity.
Little Black Books will be playing, as well as Tony Bennett as the lone acoustic guy, but we need a headliner!!! Are you in a band that will donate one night of rock (hip hop, reggae, funk, folk, socca, whatev) to help us help Haiti?
PeaceLoveHaiti is a nonprofit group made up of 2 RNs. We go to Port au Prince and try to help as many people as possible by running mobile clinics in the tent cities there. We have a blog — peacelovehaiti.blogspot.com.

Annual Duluth Public Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Duluth Public Library invite you to the Annual Used Book Sale. The dates this year are August 18 and 19 from 10 until 5:30 p.m. and the Bag Sale on Friday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. There is early admission for Friends members on August 17 from 10 until 5:30 p.m. People can join Friends at the sale. Shop for bargain books, CDs, DVDs, books on tape. A silent auction will be held with older and rarer books. All proceeds from this fundraiser go toward Duluth Public Library book and media purchases and toward programs held at the library.
Are you a Member of the Friends of the Duluth Public Library? It’s only $10 per year and let’s you get into the sale on Tuesday, Aug 17 – 10 to 5:30. You may join the Friends of the DPL on-site.

For their Senior Capstone project, Marshall School seniors Katie Kronzer, Yoon Tack, Gunnar O’Neill Sengbush, and Hannah Curwin will be hosting a benefit concert for the Boys & Girls Club of the Northland. The concert will feature the four seniors performing popular songs from artists such as John Mayer, the Wreckers, Jason Mraz, and the Beatles. The Automaton Records Media Conglomerate Presents the Twin Ports: A Compilation for Homegrown
Well, I know that pretty much everyone in the area already knows all about this project because I’m such a big deal around here and everyone talks about everything I do and whatnot, but the Automaton Records Media Conglomerate is proud to be offering up for this year’s Homegrowners a very special compilation.
It’s a limited edition and handmade production — 39 songs on two CDs, all generously donated by the artists for use with this generously special compilation. The cost is $6! It includes a 4-color hand screen printed 100% recycled cardboard double sleeve! Holy cripes! This is a limited edition of only 200 copies.
The profits from this compilation go to the festival. So, you know, it’s good to support that too.

PAVSA’s 29th Annual Art Auction
PAVSA’s 29th Annual Art Auction will take place on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Duluth. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the silent auction set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Following will be the live auction, featuring pieces donated by local artists. An additional highlight will be the dessert auction, with fine cheesecakes, chocolate delights, and other delectable desserts up for bid. Appetizers and hors d’oeuvres will be served throughout the evening. Tickets for the Art Auction are $50 each.
At the 2009 Art Auction, PAVSA will be honoring individuals through three awards. Receiving the 2009 Community Ally awards will be Coral McDonnell and Officer Robert Carter. Coral McDonnell has been actively involved as an advocate in the sexual assault and domestic violence movements since for more than three decades. She worked with the Domestic Abuse Intervention Program for many years and has served on the PAVSA Board of Directors since 2006.
Also receiving the Community Ally Award is Investigator Robert (Bob) Carter, a long-time patrol officer and former member of the Duluth Police Sex Crimes, Abuse and Neglect Unit. Officer Carter, who passed away in August, was committed to ending sexual violence and was a leader in addressing the issue of trafficking of adolescent girls in our community. Bob was also an avid photographer and donated his work to the PAVSA Art Auction.
PAVSA’s Artist of the Year Award will honor artists Michael Tonder and Jody Freij-Tonder, co-owners of Blue Skies Glassworks. Michael and Jody have been longtime donors to the PAVSA Art Auction, and we are pleased to recognize them for their environmentally conscious sculptures, stained glass, and fused glass pieces.

Peace Cabaret: Welcome by Claudie Washington. Barton Sutter, Rabbi Amy Bernstein, Mary Cameron, David Comer, Portia Johnson, and Claire Kirch read short pieces by Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, Fannie Lou Hamer, Stokely Carmichael, Sojourner Truth, and Barbara Jordan. Jazz by Perfectini.
This November, photographer/activist Sue Sojourner is returning again to Holmes County after working there in the Civil Rights Movement for five years in the 1960s. This time the Oral History Center of the University of Southern Mississippi-Hattiesburg is holding a gathering for the surviving veterans of that Movement. The event uses a workbook Sue created on the Holmes Movement History as a memory catalyst. It will be a unique local-community-led oral history documentation project.
This fundraiser will help defray travel costs to Mississippi. It will also help Sue finish her memoir and catalog her historical collections for transfer to two archival institutions.

Come get bargain books, DVDs, videos, CDs, vinyl and more at the annual book sale held at the Duluth Public Library, 520 W. Superior St. Hours for the sale are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Aug 19 and 20 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the bag sale on Friday, Aug 21. The sale is open to Friends members only on Tuesday, Aug 18 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There will be a special handicap-accessible shopping time from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wed, Aug. 19. Book categories include children’s books, fiction, biographies, cookbooks, nature, and much more. People can join Friends at the book fair or on-line at www.duluth.lib.mn.us/CS/Friends.html.
A silent auction will be held on the library upper level during the book fair and will have rare and unique books.
