Bitching
I just wanted to read more about the Grand Marais Slaw Dog?

My Sisters Place - Slaw Dog
It appears I need to pay $2.95 if I want to read more about the Grand Marais Slaw Dog. WHY?
I understand the rough time print publications are going through these days but $2.95 for one article on Slaw Dogs. Dang – the Slaw Dog probably does not even cost that much.

Several years ago I took my kids to the playground at Wheeler Field. We went into the clubhouse for a bit, and I read the signs that explain the history of the place and the Wheeler family. We went back outside, and I got into a time-traveling kind of mood, imagining moving away from the places I know for this vast wilderness, running a pioneer’s household without the help of other women, giving birth to babies here. This mind trip was made easier by looking at the huge, wooded hill behind us. “This is what it would have looked like to her, too,” I imagined.
But that’s not the case anymore. I was there on Tuesday, and saw this house being built. It’s too late for me to take a “before” picture, but I looked it up on google maps. I can’t see where the road to the house would be, but I guess it’s connected to Skyline.
I don’t usually feel like development is bad. My house is on developed land, right? Who am I to tell someone else they can’t have a house, too? But being witness to the first sticking-out-like-a-thumb house on this hill makes me sad. I suppose by the time my kids are grown, the hill will be full of houses.

A Small Request

Can we all please STOP referring to this place as “Carmody’s”? The name of the bar is Carmody. Singular. Or, alternatively, Carmody Irish Pub.
It does not belong to a person named Carmody. Look at the sign. There is no apostrophe. There is no “S.”
Carmody. Plain and simple.
Anything else sounds, well, kind of stupid.
Comments edited/deleted
Since when, and why, do those posting on PDD have the ability to modify and/or delete comments that are not remotely offensive, inaccurate, etc.?
Please be seated. Your server will be with you in about five hours.
Surely some of you noticed PDD was down for several hours today. It was the fifth time we’ve had problems with our server in the past two months, so naturally we’ll be taking our business elsewhere very soon.
We hope you won’t take your blogging elsewhere while these difficulties are sorted out.
Sorry for PDD down time!
We are having some issues with our hosting provider and we are working on the issues. We may be moving to a new provider in the near future to insure more stability, better performance and hopefully leave me with a little hair. Thanks 🙂
Ads for Amazon
Cleverly disguised as an ad for a fantastic book by an amazingly talented artist and writer, Chris Monroe. I work hard to promote the many excellent books I come across – a great number of them from within this region: blogging (at least semi-regularly), writing a weekly newsletter and talking to people through facebook and twitter and, most rewardingly, at the store – talking about books and authors that I love and that people have shared with me. It’s hard to then see a book that I’ve worked to introduce people to being used as a way to drive money to amazon.
I’m not saying you need to buy it at the store where I work. Or buy it at Fitgers. Or buy it up at the Mall. Or even that it’s the end of the world to buy it from amazon. But I do want to confront this notion that amazon is either neutral or the only game in town (which it most decidedly is not since it has nothing to do with our town whatsoever) when it comes to links about media, especially books. IndieBound lets you search all books in print and then, after you’ve learned a bit more about them, lets you find a locally owned, independent store of your choice. You can search for varieties of local businesses across the US. You can add you favorite local businesses. Authors can affiliate themselves with IndieBound and receive a portion of the sale (not being an author, I have to rely on rumor that the terms are more generous than amazon).
I’m not advocating amazon abstinence, but really try to measure your options more carefully. Get excited about local businesses. Get excited for local events. Celebrate our musicians, writers, actors, publishers, artists, etc. who really make this area so wonderful.
New PPD = WIN, New Banner Policy = FAIL
I am very happy that the PPD nerds continue to strive forward into the 21st century. The switch from MT to WP was a fine platform choice and the chosen design is quite lovely. A certain DIY aspect was lost however with the new banner submission process.
I’ll detail my complaints in order:
- The Perfect Duluth Day logo will be added by PDD’s art department.
- You will not be notified if your photo has been accepted or rejected.
