Alan Sparhawk with Trampled by Turtles — “Stranger” (Live at Fitzgerald Theater)
Clean those dashboard cup holders, the Current has released a video of Alan Sparhawk performing “Stranger” with Trampled by Turtles during a Dec. 11 concert at Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Video of the entire show will be released on Friday, May 29, to mark the one-year anniversary of Sparhawk’s second solo album, With Trampled by Turtles.

Chrissie Hynde Featuring Alan Sparhawk – “County Line”
Chrissie Hynde, famed lead singer of The Pretenders, has released a new album of duets featuring K. D. Lang, Cat Power, Debbie Harry and a number of other artists, including Duluth’s Alan Sparhawk. Alan Sparhawk – “No More Darkness”
Duluth’s Alan Sparhawk is one of 17 artists with new music on a compilation album set for release Dec. 5 on the Western Vinyl label. Passages: Artists in Solidarity with Immigrants, Refugees, and Asylum Seekers is a fundraiser for nonprofits that provide no-to-low cost legal services, food, shelter, access to health care and other essential services.

Alan Sparhawk announces solo album in New Yorker article
The New Yorker published an article today on Duluth musician Alan Sparhawk, chronicling his career in the seminal indie-rock band Low and concluding with news about his latest recordings. “The fruits of this work will be released this fall under his own name, as a record called White Roses, My God,” reads the article’s final sentence.
Alan Sparhawk Live at Le Guess Who?
Alan Sparhawk, backed by a trio of fellow Duluthians, played six European Union shows in November 2023. The first was at Jacobikerk, a Protestant church in Utrecht, Netherlands, as part of the Le Guess Who? music festival. The embedded video above is from that performance. (more…)
Sparhawk touring Europe with solo project
The Guardian reported this week on Duluth’s Alan Sparhawk’s European tour, which features a set list of new songs that mine the depths of grief for his late wife and bandmate Mimi Parker.
The tour opened Nov. 11 with a performance at Le Guess Who Fest in Utrecht, Netherlands. It continues with three shows in Spain and two in Portugal.

Alan Sparhawk of Low on American Football

This video is more than three years old, but with the Super Bowl coming up this weekend it seems appropriate to get Duluth musician Alan Sparhawk’s take on the sport of football.
The video was shot during Low’s tour of the United Kingdom prior to the release of the 2018 album Double Negative. Luke Turner, editor of the rock music and pop culture website the Quietus met Sparhawk at the Barbican Centre in London to talk about football as part of the website’s “At Leisure” series, looking at musicians and their non-musical interests.

Duluth record labels boosted the scene, but are going extinct

Mark Lindquist, the chief purveyor of local albums at the turn of the millennium, thinks he can succinctly describe the difference between the best-known Duluth record labels.
“Chair Kickers’ put out the most gorgeous records,” he said. “Spinout had the most professional. Chaperone had the coolest. And Shaky Ray had … the most.” (more…)
