Been a Voyageur???
Myself, another father, and 4 kids are planning a trip to Voyageurs National Park in early August. Any advice on entry point, camp sites, places of interest, etc. would be appreciated.
Olfactory Observations
I took a walk through downtown Duluth yesterday around 5am and was struck by the ambient smells that a lot of buildings give off when there are no competing smells coming from cars, people, etc.
- The Kozy Bar & Apartments smells like stale booze. This should surprise no one.
- Pizza Lucé smells like stale cigarettes. This isn’t exactly surprising, but disappointing. You want it to smell like their delicious pizza. It’s hard to say which smells worse — the Kozy or Lucé. I guess that’s open to interpretation.
- Angela’s Bella Flora is the best-smelling building in the downtown area.

Join live music from Tangier 57 as you set out on our rocket ship to the stars (well, just a train to look at stars, but use your imagination). We’ll launch at 9pm from the Depot, arrive at Larsmont beyond the lights of the city, disembark and stargaze with experts from the Arrowhead Astronomical Society, then return home by 1am. You’ll be served pizza (remember ‘the horta’ episode from the original Star Trek?) and two free drink tickets – wine, beer, and a special “tang tang” cocktail concoction courtesy of PDD suggestions.

My Perfect Duluth Day
One of the many bands playing during the sidewalk day’s car show covered Tommy Seebach’s Apache. I’ve never felt so much bliss flow though my body while walking down superior street. It truly was a Perfect Duluth Day.

Tang Cocktail?
The Duluth Art Institute is hosting a “Space Train” on July 31. There will be music by Tangier 57, a chance to look at stars with telescopes, as well as food and drink. (Get your tickets here.)

“Pawlenty should do a Sarah Palin and Step Down” that was something my friend Scott Yeazle said, speaking at a rally at city hall today. The rally was in opposition to the governor’s unallotment decisions. I’m not gonna try to be a real reporter or anything, I tried that years ago and was terrible at it, too much ego and opinion, too little filter.
Show and Tell: Duluth Welcomes Norway’s Royal Couple
This nice little button celebrates the dedication of Enger Tower. The King and Queen of Norway were on hand along with many prominent Duluth dignitaries. I’ve had this thing for more than 30 years. I think an ex-girlfriend’s mother was cleaning out a junk drawer and gave it to me.

I have an old Bridgeman-Russell Company ruler. I don’t often think about how awesome it is, so I catch myself using it to do things like scrape gunk off a counter. For the sake of history, I’ll try to be more careful in the future. (more…)

Pastors for Peace are on their way to Cuba again to bust the U.S. blockade. They’ll either deliver 100s of tons of needed aid to the island, or land in prison.
Come on out to Lafayette Community Center on the Point this Tuesday, July 7 to send them off and shake your salsa thang.
- 6PM Cuban dinner (veggie) and a speaker on the Cuban health care system
- 7:30PM salsa lessons with Juliana Bertelsen… then we dance
Come for all or part of the evening. Cash donations for the caravan taken at the door. It’ll be fun. And humanitarian. Can’t beat that.
