If the Vikings lose to the Packers, I’m blaming it on the lame new name of the field
“Branding the field [at the Metrodome] as Mall of America Field represents an opportunity to share our name and image with an even larger nationwide audience. It also connects two treasured Minnesota brands – Mall of America and the Minnesota Vikings – which adds value to both companies.”
–Maureen Bausch, executive vice president of making people want to puke

Which Camcorder?
Looking to buy a camcorder for taking music videos of myself singing/playing acoustic guitar for Youtube upload. In the $200-350 range. I haven’t had much luck finding something with better audio quality that works well in low light conditions. I was told that flash memory format is the best option but what about other formats that might have better audio quality and lowlight performance? The criteria I’m most interested in are 1. Ease of upload to Youtube/internet; 2. Better sound quality; 3. Image quality/good low light performance; 4. Ease of use; 5. Has image stabilization; 6. Prefer Mac/PC compatible; 7. Longer battery life.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Thanks for you help. Please respond to me at jtmjourneys@yahoo.com

Bike racks anyone?
I sent an e-mail to the Duluth Transit Authority last year questioning why it takes bike racks off before winter — seeing how in cities with somewhat similar weather (e.g. Minneapolis, Portland) leave them on year ’round and are rated some of the best cycler-friendly cities nationwide.
This morning I did the same, but with results:
I have forwarded this on for a response.
I do believe we have decided this year not to remove them.
I will supply a response when I get it.
Thank you for your inquiry.Aleda M. Johnson

More on Skyline Parkway
Here are a few excerpts from Duluth’s Skyline Parkway Corridor Management Plan of 2003:
“New buildings should be compatible with surrounding buildings in size and scale and SHOULD NOT BLOCK IMPORTANT VIEWS.”
“Limit residential development where it can damage … IMPORTANT VIEWS.”
“Avoid lakeside (downslope) development whenever possible.”
Terror Train 2009 Duluth
This biennial Halloween event normally sells out. I can confirm it is a ghoulish good time, even though I missed the train going back to Duluth and was stuck in Two Harbors for the night. I guess Joe Dirt was a little too drunk to hear the last three “All Aboard” calls. That must have been about the time I was in the basement of the Legion doing shots from the mystery bag for a buck. Got a motorcycle and a warm jacket??
One more First Thursday Motorcycle Ride!!!!!
Sorry no flier for this month’s ride, it was kind of last minute. A group of us are meeting at the Whole Foods Co-op, I’ll be there by 5:30. We plan on heading out at 6, maybe a quick ride around skyline, or maybe out to Jay Cooke. Bring some warm clothes, and pray for clear skies. We most likely won’t ride if it’s pouring rain. See you there!

HELIPHINO IV!

Our next festival is this Friday, Oct 2! If you’re heading this direction or looking for something interesting to do, stop on by! A Whisper in the Noise and Tim Kaiser will perform later in the evening, while Logan “logain” Erickson will give a circuit bending demo and performance earlier on. Bruce Nelson, who hasn’t performed in over 10 years, opens the show (for those of us crusty old folks, he’s the grizzled guy who used to run the open stage at Quinlans in the early 90’s where many cut their performing teeth).

Brian Olson’s mural of the Palace Theater

Two blocks from the site of the old Palace Theater in Superior is the new Palace Theater, a painting of the old one. Brian Olson created this mural on the back side of the Douglas County Historical Society building.

Fall Colors – Trestle Inn – On the Road with Jason Davis
Good “On the Road” segment that aired a few weeks ago on KSTP 5 Twin Cites. It was nice to see my friends at the Trestle Inn get some free advertising. I was up there on Grouse opener to have lunch and a couple drinks and was talking to the owners and they have got a lot calls since the airing with people asking, “Where are you? I put you into our GPS and it can’t find you.” Sue says, “OK first turn off the GPS and I will tell you how to get here.” They insist, “But my GPS can’t find you. What is the problem?” She politely says again, “OK if you want me to help you find us just turn off your GPS and I will tell you how to get here.” https://www.trestleinn.com
Duluth Honking House Hearing
Did anyone go to tonight’s Duluth City Council meeting to watch the show as the council debated potential parking restrictions on Skyline Parkway near the infamous Honking House? (Back story found on this post, including a link for the even further back story.)
Or did you all stay home and ironically watch part two of Ken Burns’ documentary The National Parks: America’s Best Idea?
The council voted unanimously against the two resolutions.

Music Resource Center in Duluth?
Duluth’s Crystal Pelkey traveled to Charlottesville, Va., in June to research the operations of the Music Resource Center there. She’s been exploring the possibility of creating an MRC branch in Duluth.
Crystal will present her Music Resource Center research on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 5:30 p.m., at the Teatro Zuccone theater, 222 E. Superior St.
Founded by John Hornsby in 1993, with initial financial support by the Dave Matthews Band, the Music Resource Center is a state-of-the-art facility where teens learn the latest technology in the music industry and participate in every phase of music production and performance.
If you are interested in this project, here’s your chance to find out more and become involved in the next steps of the process.

Minnesota North Shore Fall Colors Report 2009
This year’s fall colors are a bit behind due to warmer than normal weather, but should start to peak in the next few weeks. Typically the peak happens sooner if you go inland from the shore. The colors right on or near the shores of Lake Superior tend to peak a little bit later.
See Minnesota DNR’s Fall Color Finder for more info.
