Gigabyte broadband from Google – in Duluth?

Here’s a press release we’ll be sending out about our intent to explore Google’s offer to bring gigabyte speed broadband to an entire community.  There are many unanswered questions and any application may be a long shot, but it would be a game-changer for Duluth.  I think it’s worth putting our best foot forward and see what happens…  If you want to help out, check the bottom of the post.  See you around…  Don

Mayor Don Ness has indicated the City of Duluth‘s intent to pursue a partnership with Google to bring fiber-to-home connections to city residents.  Google plans to select a community to test ultra-high speed connections at more than a gigabit per second later this year through a competitive process.

The following is a statement from Mayor Ness on the city’s intent:

We want Duluth, Minnesota to be at the forefront of a new gigaband revolution in America.  For America to be competitive into the future, we need to be aggressive at investing in our data infrastructure.  To unfairly paraphrase Tip O’Neill “All bandwidth use is local” – Google’s community initiative will be a powerful tool to demonstrate the positive impact of local broadband improvements.

Denfeld and Ordean – DNT nails it

I think today might be the third time the Duluth News Tribune has editorialized that Duluth’s two high schools (when the long range facilities plan is complete) should be called Denfeld and Ordean. (‘Denfeld,’ ‘Ordean’ preserve past, discourage east-west divide.)

I couldn’t agree more, and I wish the school district would finally put this issue to rest. Are you with me, people?

Trivia weekend

Do any PDD regulars do KVSC Trivia weekend in St. Cloud? It begins Friday. Care to be a source? Don’t know what the hell I’m talking about? See kvsc.org. You can listen online and then bug the station into getting a Twin Ports simulcast in 2011. Then we form the PDD trivia team and take home the honors: A beat up trophy and your team name in the paper.

Also, I am considering printing t-shirts of the best Rainbow Rescue Beam cartoon ever (below-image intentionally low rez). Orders would have to be in advance and would need to meet a minimum number so I don’t have to lay out big ching ahead of time on mats. Contact: adam [at] transistormag [dot] com.

Story Ideas?

I am yet another student @ UMD in a journalism reporting & writing searching for a story.

We are working on a history of Duluth story… I was spending some time in Bixby’s and noticed the community knitting project…

I would love to find someone who has a quiet history of working on community grassroots projects… know of anyone?

or any other suggestions?

Google Fiber – Let’s Bring it to Duluth!

Google just announced that it will be choosing one or more locations to put in a ultra high-speed broadband service to a community to serve as a test bed.

This could potentially bring millions of dollars to our area as well as spark a lot of new business to be formed on the back of this service.

Help promote Duluth as the test site for Google’s new 1 GB fiber.  Here is the nomination form.

There is also a Facebook group that has been started to try and promote this idea across the Northland.

Derby racing in Hartley

Anyone remember when they had Soap Box Derby races in Hartley back in 1961-1968? I’m writing an article on it for a class and would love any help, information or photos that anyone may know or have!

Thanks!
Lauren

Anyone have any story ideas?

I am writing a story for my Reporting and Writing II class at UMD.

We are to cover a specific area of Duluth, and dig deep for a story.

I have the area near 4th and Wallace, sort of near the Holy Rosary Catholic school.

Does anyone know of anything going on, or have an idea you would be interested in hearing more about?

Please let me know any thoughts or ideas. Thank you

Paul Lundgren Happy Hour

AngryBandPhotoNo, I haven’t formed an angry heavy-metal band, although this photo might suggest otherwise.

I’m hosting three happy hour events at Teatro Zuccone. Each show features a special guest performer (or member of my angry band).

All three shows are on Wednesdays. They all start at 6 p.m. and will be over by 7 p.m. so you can socialize at the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe afterward and still be home well before bedtime.

Admission is free. Don’t thank me, thank ARAC.

The first show will be Feb. 10 and will feature musician Rachael Kilgour. The Feb. 17 show will feature actress Christa Schulz and the Feb. 24 show will feature poet Ryan Vine.

Did I mention I have a book now? It’s called The Spowl Ribbon. You can purchase it at any of my various performances, or rip me off and read the PDF for free.

My name is Paul Lundgren; I’m here for your amusement.

Buy A Piece Of Duluth History

Howdy. I have a couple of items for sale on Craigslist that someone out there in PDD land may be interested in.

#1-Two Technics SL-1200MK2 turntables with cases. These are the original Random Radio turntables and they are still in excellent condition.

#2-Anvil Briefcase. This is the briefcase I used when organizing Homegrown, Geek Prom and whatever other silliness I could come up with. Now it just sits in the basement begging to be used.

You can run this thing over with a truck and it will still function. Just ask Eric Swanson.

Valentine’s Day anyone?

Hey PDD! I was wondering what is going on in Duluth/Superior for the oh-so-dreaded Halmark engraved day of love? I saw a few ads for restaurants posted in the DNT but wanted more input. Anybody out there to help a lady and her boyfriend out?

NorShor Centennial

NorShorMarqueeActionA post from Feb. 3 about the Ripsaw’s history featured some comments about the NorShor Theatre’s history, which led to an interesting point:

The NorShor Theater turns 100 this year.

And so I put this question to PDD’s history detectives: What is the exact date the NorShor–then the Orpheum Theatre–first opened its doors?

UPDATE: As Gea reports, the magic date is Aug. 22, 1910.

What would you call it?

Hi PDD people. I teach journalism at UMD where a group of students is working on creating a news web site that will focus on telling community-focused stories from around Duluth. We’re brainstorming for the right name and I thought I’d throw it out there and see what ideas this group might come up with. In the past it’s been called Duluth Community News, but the students think that is weak. Suggestions? Once we’re up and running we’ll share our stories here on PDD and hopefully invite this community to help us discover other stories to tell.
