Homegrown Schedule Changes

If you’re using the Homegrown Music Festival Field Guide to chart your course, please note the following changes:

Wednesday, May 5 – Although it’s referred to as “Lakewalk Night,” you might not want to use the Lakewalk to get from the Canal Park venues to Fitger’s or vice versa. The part of the Lakewalk between Endion Depot and Fitger’s will be closed to allow workers to repave it. The Homegrown steering committee didn’t see that coming.

Thursday, May 6 – The Fractals are not playing at the Brewhouse at 11 p.m. The What Four will be playing. These bands were switched after the schedule was printed.

Friday, May 7 – Dead Man Winter had to cancel its gig. Consequently, the Keep Aways will be playing at 10 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. at Twins Bar.

Jeffrey James O’Laughlin and Ashley Northey have switched slots for Friday night. So O’Laughlin will be playing at Sir Benedict’s Tavern on the Lake at 11 p.m. and Northey will be playing at Carmody Irish Pub at 10:15. Also, Northey has been playing with a band lately, and that band has a name now — the Sweet Virginias.

As referenced above, the What Four is not playing at Roscoe’s Pioneer Bar at 11 p.m. on Friday. The Fractals have moved to that slot.

The updated schedule is on the Homegrown site.

The Penetration of Homegrown

Denied or not, you’ll see me play a short set Tuesday night at Chester Creek Cafe/At Sara’s Table. A friend of mine who is playing there tonight (Rory James) has decided to give up some time from his Homegrown slot to allow a few musicians to, well, “get up there and show their stuff.” Come see my roommate, Avery (Slave Dog) and I get a little ‘experimental’. Hahahahahaha. And no, this penetration will NOT be a safe procedure 😉

Rusty Borealis - Fell Down Pretty Cover

I went astray, I admit it. I uprooted the Party Store Minnows from our cozy Central Hillside home and left for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Some nights I dream that Wisconsin doesn’t exist and that the shoreline of Marquette and the shoreline of Duluth are within walking distance. Of course, those are usually the same nights I wake up with hamstring cramps. But alas, I’m finally coming back to Duluth for Homegrown with a new band, Rusty Borealis. We’re playing Friday night at Teatro Zuccone at 7:45 p.m., right after Bill Reichelt. Also, we’ve got a new album — Fell Down Pretty — out on Spinout Records and it’s available for download at all the usual spots.

Please Stay Off The Rocks!

I have been collecting some funny or odd sign pictures the last year or so, well, signs that strike me as funny or odd, anyway. I guess this could also qualify as a “Where in Duluth?” if anyone wants to play that game …

Paddles Up!

The Duluth Boat Club’s Dragon Boat Team, the Invincible Dragons, is looking for a few good men and women. We need to round out our team with some power and style. A dragon boat requires 20 paddlers, a steersperson and a drummer (like a coxswain in rowing) and we have space on our roster.

The team will race in the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival on Aug. 28 as well as two other festivals in the area. We are a friendly group of paddlers and athletes, new and seasoned, that take our competition seriously and take our fun even more seriously.  Skill, fitness, sportsmanship, and friendship are some of our key values on the team.  We meet roughly once a week for practice and usually will kill any beneficial workout with a couple of beers following. Anybody is welcome and we’ll teach you how to paddle the dragon boat stroke.

Girls

Aren't they cute?

Sorry for the snafu!

Duluth/Superior Auto Mechanic Help

I’ve been living in this area for nearly four years and have not been able to find a decent auto mechanic who has a good reputation and is reliable. Any help or reviews would be greatly appreciated. It seems that for the most simple things I get charged an outrageous price, then the car breaks down a week later with something else unrelated.

Duluth or Superior is fine I just need to feel like I’m not getting ripped off.  I’m 67 and female and really bet they see me coming.  I was charged for a fix, the same thing broke a week later and I was charged a “shop fee” to fix the same thing again.  Not nice!

Heath (the hound) needs a home for Homegrown

Looking for a good kennel for Heath the dog on Saturday, May 8. Some good friends are driving up from Winona and need to house their dog for one night. Recommendations?

They are continuing their journey with their dog to camp along the south shore after Saturday.

Homegrown Wizard

Last night Old Knifey, Walt Dizzo, and I won the Homegrown Quiz at Carmody.  The prize?  This wizard.

The wizard (who needs a name) spent the afternoon in the Mayor’s office reviewing the Homegrown Guide (and the City budget).   He’s now ready for the complete Homegrown experience, he’ll need hosts to bring him around to various shows.   If you see him around, feel free to take him elsewhere.  Post your pictures of the wizard to the flicker account.

Duluth Salad Bars in 2010

So since everyone did me right on the cake question on my birthday, now I want to know: Other than Old Country Buffet, is there a restaurant in town that has a salad bar? I can’t think of one off the top of my head.

Duluth Party Bus Recommendations

I am hoping all you wonderful Perfect Duluth Day readers can help me plan the best bachelorette party for my friend! I am in need of suggestions for party bus rentals. The party will be in early June, so I need to get one booked soon. Have you had any wonderful experiences with any local party bus drivers/services?

Last Chance Bikers: Show Us Your Routes!

Monday, May 3, and Tuesday, May 4, are your last opportunities to show us how bicycling can be improved in your area! Fit City Duluth and the Metropolitan Interstate Council are working together to learn about the habits of bikers in Duluth. At these meetings you will be asked where you currently bike, where you would bike if it was easier, where bike racks should go, and other biking issues, and you will learn why this information is important for Duluth.

Food will be provided! Both meetings start at 6pm:

  • May 3 – Central Hillside Community Center (12 E 4th St)
  • May 4 – Portman Community Center (4601 McCulloch St)

2010 Homegrown Tags (UPDATED)

Once again, Homegrown has begun, and once again, all you numbskulls will be out there flashing your fancy digicams and/or tapping at your mobile devices, cataloging all the craziness as it happens. And as always, it’s important to properly tag your stuff so that everyone else knows that it exists.

Keeping with the tradition of years past, let’s all use the following tags:

Homegrown Twitter hashtag: #HG10 #HGMF10
Homegrown Flickr tag: homegrownmusicfestival2010

I would also recommend tagging your Flickr photos with HG10 since it’s easy to do and it doesn’t hurt to apply an additional layer of taggish re-enforcement.

I’ll post here again tomorrow with the ever-growing Flickr slideshow of everyone’s shots. Here are links to slideshows from previous years, to get you excited: 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009

Happy Homegrown! Raise your glass, submit your banner photos, stick your tongue out, tell Gomez what to do.

In honor of the Homegrown Music Festival, Perfect Duluth Day is again featuring a week of photo banners related to Duluth’s annual celebration of rawk and/or roll devil music. (What that means is, the images you see at the top of this page — from May 2 to 9 — will be photos from Homegrown.)

If you want to submit a banner, it’s not too late. We can add new ones throughout the week. Just follow the same guidelines generally used to submit a banner.

Good Ol’ Random History

i33.photobucket.com

I stopped by Amazing Alonzo the other day and picked this beauty up for a cheap 6 bucks. Packed full of weird facts and stories of history dating back to Moses. Topics range from how we used to treat the mentally ill, crime and punishment (including mass executions of heretics and misconceptions of the guillotine), cocaine cough drops, and did you know that the French had a fascination with enemas well through the 19th century?! Seriously good read. Pretty certain they don’t have another copy, but search for it.

A Homegrown Story

I always get a kick out of some of the band names in Duluth’s huge music family. After looking at this year’s lineup, came up with this little tale, using every single name listed for Fri./Sat. and pitting them against each other:

It was the battle of Rawk vs. Roll. Electric vs. Acoustic. And it all started at a park in Duluth one day in early May, Circa A.M.
