This group is very friendly, very fun, very different from your “normal” choral ensemble. No music reading, no mumbled hymn singing, no screeching sopranos. Traditional music from the U.S. and West Africa and original songs written/arranged just for the chorus.

Hillfest 2010: Livin’ in the Hillside
The Hillside community welcomes its friends and neighbors to the first annual Hillfest, a new festival celebrating the Hillside. Hillfest will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the intersection of N. Sixth Ave. E. & Fourth St.
With live music, food, local art and craft vendors, a wealth of children’s activities, community information, and the revival of the Whole Foods Co-op Tofu Toss, it’s going to be a great day in the Hillside. Admission is free, and everyone is invited!
Participants are encouraged to walk or bike to Hillfest, though free parking will be available in the St. Mary’s ramp at 320 E. Fourth St. Kids will have the opportunity to decorate their bikes before a bike rodeo by the Duluth Police Department, try their luck on the climbing wall, and listen to music and stories from local artists.
Live music on the main stage will include Treetop Tango, 2one8, and others. The Whole Foods’ Tofu Toss is a ridiculously fun event, with all proceeds donated to East Hillside Patch’s Mind 2 Mind program. Tofu Toss registration forms are available at Whole Foods Co-op.
Hillfest is still accepting vendor registration. Registration is only $10, so it’s a great way to sell your wares and promote your business or organization.

It’s amusing to me that the soundtrack to this slideshow is by Dokken. You might think that’s a poor choice, but I remember 20 years ago the only Duluth kids into Dokken were from Morgan Park, so it makes sense.

We’re looking to partner with local landlords who own apt. buildings
We’re looking for landlords in Duluth who want to partner with our group that provides on-site mental health services.
Our model is that we provide on-site services within a particular building. We provide a variety of mental health services and are available beyond typical working hours. For example, we may be willing to rent an office in the apt. building- providing staff up to 24/7.
Yes, there are other programs out there. HDC provides outreach, case management. Also there are the HRA programs that provide Sec. 8, Bridges and Shelter Plus vouchers. Our model is something different that taps into additional funding streams and which allows us to be more on-site and responsive to people’s needs.
If anyone knows of landlords out there that own an apt. building and who may be interested in hearing how this program can help them I’d love to talk to them.
We want to get people the help they can use while also partnering with landlords to address the challenges that sometimes come with renting to individuals who need additional supports to live well in the community.

Charlie Parr
Charlie Parr is the real deal. A Duluthian through and through, he’s about as unpretentious as they come. Climbing up on stage dressed in a flannel shirt, carpenter’s pants, and work boots, he wields his steel-stringed guitar like it’s an extension of his body, effortlessly gliding over the frets with a slide and letting it reverberate before trading it for a banjo or a 12-string. Sometimes when he plays he’s accompanied by an unassuming young lad who looks like he’s been plucked straight from the ore mines on the Iron Range, who clangs on train spikes and steel bars while Parr sings and strums. And while Parr’s guitar playing is technically complex and seemlingly effortless, it’s his voice-a blues howl with a soft side, which can climb up from a sweet moan into a loud bellow at a moment’s notice-that accentuates the stark, sad nature of his songs, painting vivid portraits through lyrics about loneliness, the devil, and making things right with the Lord. Fink does not seek endorsment
First District Commissioner Dennis Fink did not seek the endorsement of AFSCME or the Central Labor Body. The two have combined and have a new name this year but will still offer two endorsements. It seems odd to me that one group would hand out two endorsements under the false precedence of being two groups.

Connect the Dots!
Join your friends and neighbors for Duluth LISC and the At Home in Duluth Collaborative’s fourth annual Neighborhood Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 2.
The event opens at Clyde Iron Works (2920 W. Michigan St.) with a free breakfast from 8:30 – 9:45 am, and features a program starting at 10:45 am, during which five Duluth Neighborhood Heroes will be honored. Along with free entertainment, childcare and fun activities, and transportation, attendees can visit dozens of resource tables, offering valuable information and tips from community-minded businesses and organizations from 8:30 am to noon.
The public is warmly invited to this free, family-oriented event. Together, we’ll celebrate successes — past, present and future — in Duluth’s five core neighborhoods: East Hillside, Central Hillside, Lincoln Park, West Duluth and Morgan Park. Upset Duluth
Every month or so there is a story in the Duluth News Tribune about a community member or group of people upset about something. The story usually features a photo like the one above, shot by Bob King.

One hiker could be freed on Saturday
The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that one of the three American hikers jailed in Iran for more than a year could be released Saturday.

There is no word on which hiker might be freed. One of them, Shane Bauer, is a Minnesotan. His sister and brother-in-law live in Duluth, and he also has family in Shakopee and Pine City.
