Duluth Deer Parts
Has anyone else noticed deer parts along Seven Bridges Road? You know where they close the road in the winter, and people walk and ski and snowmobile and run dogs? Near the barrier at the bottom, and in the woods next to Smiley’s, my dog is always coming up with a spine or a leg or a hunk of pelvis. What’s up with that? Do poachers dump the parts they don’t want there? Do old deer go there to die?

Lost Spaces in Duluth
I just wanted to put a general question out there for those that know the city better than me:
What are some existing abandoned buildings you know of in Duluth? (Including places that are in the works of being renovated, or even really unique, big interior spaces that aren’t abandoned).
Duluth mansion demolition makes way for big box store
Well, they have begun to tear down the mansion to make way for the mega Walgreens. Some other houses will be torn down, too. See my post The Last Mansion Between Kitchi Gammi Club and 14th Ave. East.

I note that the first piece of legislation that Raymond Cravaack saw fit to propose involved defunding the U.S. Institute of Peace, a $46.5 million budgetary rounding error responsible for useless projects like the Iraq Study Group.
[The USIP is currently raising money to complete a relatively fancy headquarters on the Mall, but has for years been located on the second floor of the National Restaurant Association’s palatial headquarters in DC.]

Community Clean-ups for Water Quality

I’ve seen President’s Day, Presidents’ Day, and Presidents Day. (watch the ads on TV or in print) Which is it? I’m with the plural possessive, since we celebrate Lincoln and Washington specifically. Or do we celebrate all presidents? Then it should be like Veterans Day. Chime in.

After a hiatus of a couple of years, the Duluth Public Library Reference staff has begun posting again on its blog Reference @ Duluth.
Library staff will be providing local history articles and information about reference services at the library.

Steelhead Fishing Class for Youth
Join the Lake Superior Steelhead Association (LSSA) and Hartley Nature Center for a great opportunity to learn about and try steelhead fishing. This event has eight openings for youth ages 12-15 to work with LSSA mentors to learn everything from equipment to technique. Female mentors available, so female youth are encouraged to sign up! Class includes: Two classroom sessions at Hartley Nature Center (3001 Woodland Ave.) on March 12 & 19, 2011 from 10 am to noon. Two field sessions at the Knife River, April 9 & 16, 2011. Equipment (if needed) will be provided. Participants will receive a certificate of participation and recognition at the LSSA Spring Banquet, April 16.
Cost is only $25 and includes the banquet. For more information or to register contact Hartley Nature Center at 724-6735. Together, teaching and encouraging youth to get outdoors and fish!
Thirteen Moons Anishinaabe Storytelling
In the Ojibwe tradition there are hundreds of stories, some as old as the earth itself. Traditionally, these stories can only be told when there is snow on the ground. This Saturday about a dozen storytellers will be at the Sawyer Center to share some of these amazing stories. Everyone is welcome, the cost is free, but they are asking people to pre-register at the site.

Rally to Support Working Families
Where: Northern Lights Elementary to City Hall
When: Wednesday, Feb. 16, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Meet at Northern Lights at 4 and leave for City Hall at 4:15. We will walk down Hammond Ave.
Who: Union families and concerned citizens of the Twin Ports
Why: Get out the message that Governor Walker’s proposed legislation will hurt all families in our community.
What can you do: Make signs. Get as many of your friends and neighbors to join us in the rally.
