Favorite campsite?
Anyone have a favorite campsite at George H. Crosby/ Manitou state park? I always used to go to #5, but want input on other fabulous spots, on the river. Your thoughts?

Duluth Disc Golf
I heard about a disc golf course in Lincoln Park. Where is it located?
Also, are there other courses around that I am not aware of? I know of Mont du Lac, and the three located by the colleges (LSC, Scholastica, UMD). I am missing any others?
Not impressed.
Spock is not impressed with the Cascade Park mural. Apparently neither are some of the Hillside residents.

The Strib’s latest take on Duluth
This might be old news, but did anyone see this lovely article in the Star Tribune (Newspaper of the Twin Cities) about Duluth by Curt Brown? He’s going for Duluth beyond the lakefront, and ends up at a Burrito Union cribbage tournament.
What do you think? Did he unearth the “real Duluth”? Or just pack down further the existing path off the beaten Lakewalk path?
All roads lead to Duluth
The location of the city at the head of navigation, in the center of a continent, 1,400 miles from the sea, gives it unequaled facilities (through 8,000 miles of railways centering here) as a natural distributing point for a great and prosperous section.
We have cheap power, cheap coal, cheap gas, cheap iron, cheap raw material of woods, in vast quantities with unequaled transportation facilities in every direction.

Update on Cathedral Parking
Thought I’d pass along an update to the early July post regarding parking around the Cathedral on Sunday:
We were all gently reminded today not to park on Wallace or in any illegal parking areas today after mass. The police have informed Father Peter they will start ticketing next week. A nice reminder that sometimes if you call the police, or the source of your problem, you can get things done! Hopefully tickets will work … people are still walking in for mass at 11 a.m. and the mass time was changed to 10:30 a.m. a couple of months ago. I suspect that will continue for a couple of years.

Anybody see this yet? It was certainly a surprising sight while waiting in the drive-through at McDonald’s.
While I was getting coffee at the London Road McDonald’s, I noticed signs popping up from the other side of the fence.

Raising awareness and funds to keep our community a safer place. The 856 Campaign was conceptualized based on the 856 people in Southern St. Louis County that PAVSA worked with last year. This number can mean many things to different people: 856 victims, 856 survivors, 856 people with lives forever changed.

The Local Does Duluth on Demand
In case you missed the June 29th edition of the Local on KUMD hosted by me and Paul Lundgren and based on this PDD post, it’s now archived on our website here. It features an interview with John Berquist of the Moose Wallow Ramblers (pictured at left), who wrote “I Like it in Duluth,” and a medley of versions of that song.
You can also listen to my recent show featuring interviews and music from the Winnipeg Folk Festival, including interviews with Charlie Parr and Eric Berry of Trampled by Turtles, who were both playing the festival for the first time, here. (more…)
Hey Tourists, Welcome to Our City
In the search for info on the song “Welcome to Our City,” for the list of “Songs with ‘Duluth’ in the lyrics or title,” PDD’s Fairy Research Spy found this 1910 Duluth News Tribune illustration (which has the same title as the song, but predates it by six years). Note that the Aerial Lift Bridge is not a lift bridge … it was the Aerial Ferry Bridge back then, with a gondola car carrying cars/wagons across.
