Chery’s songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Dan Seals, Peter Paul and Mary, Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Suzy Boggus, Melanie, Bette Midler, Maura O’Connell, Sylvia, Kathy Mattea, and Holly Near. Christine Hoberg at SXSW with Spin Magazine
Christine Hoberg, a singer-songwriter with ties to Duluth-Superior, is looking for people to download a song from Spin/PopChips.com and nominate her to perform at the annual South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX. Christine is entering the contest from New York City, her current hometown. If she is the winner of her city then she will go on to compete against the winning artists from Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle (I know, I know, weird how they left the musical hotbed of Duluth off of that list).
The easiest way to do this is to click this link to Facebook and follow the directions, and yes you do (apparently) need to do this via facebook although you can listen to Christine’s music a number of places online her website, https://www.christinehoberg.com/ is a good jumping off place.
As of this writing, Christine is currently in the lead for her New York City. Being her “real” hometown, let’s push her over the top and keep her there.

DeVante’s Children at Bayfront Park
At the festival at Bayfront, Kate and I met SM Johnson, who was sharing a booth with a local alt-weekly. (I asked whether this was a “split” booth and they replied that it was a “shared” booth, which tells you a lot about the awesome community at the festival. Anyway.)

I see that Dr. Bernabo has read one of Johnson’s novels (DeVante’s Children, Torquere Press 2008). She maintains a blog, too. Anybody else read one?
Not your typical Duluth Visit
Where can I take hipster guests that is off the beaten path. Fun trails? Goofy shops? A-typical eating? Quirky destinations?
For instance, I’ve heard of Graffiti Graveyard, but I have no idea where it is – would this be a neat place to show someone interested in “real” Duluth and has already ohhh’d and ahhhh’d over the bridge?
What other neato gems are there out there?
