Local Arts

Ennyman’s Blog is hot this week with arts reviews and news.

There is the Red Interactive Project.

Red Interactive is inviting the public to an art opening the evening of Sept. 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1410 Tower Avenue in Superior (the New York Building). The project is an experimental art initiative conceived by Ed Newman and John Heino as part of Phantom Galleries Superior.

Utilizing social media, Red Interactive has received virtual and physical submissions from six continents, a dozen countries and a dozen states over the past few months since its inception in May. This opening is the first tangible event presenting a sample of what has been happening in virtual space. Admission is free. Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear red.

And there is the Ochre Ghost

Jessica L has done a fabulous job of putting Ochre Ghost on the map with original works by risk-taking artists. Last night I attended the opening of Risk of Dying is Greater in the Northland: new work by Avery Cassar plus the CD release of Danecdote’s new album: Mise en Place. The small space at 22 Second Ave. E. was fairly alive with energy from the music and the enthusiasm of the artist.

Underwater Lake Superior, Warm as Bathwater in Duluth, MN 9-10-11

If you’re allergic to pretty underwater light on rocks, self-indulgent swim videos featuring the bottom of Lake Superior, or lots of footage of my neck, then do NOT watch this.

Democracy Help

I believe in being an active participant in our republic, but I’m also lazy. My usual decision making process is to read the statements candidates submit to the League of Women voters, but it doesn’t look like the Duluth chapter is active (at least not this year, and at least not on its website). Does anyone know where I can find cheat sheets on the city council and school board candidates? I can find endorsements from labor and political parties, but I’m trying to make up my own mind … in the quickest and laziest way possible.

Local boy made good, Bridger Zadina, live!

On Friday, Sept. 9, at 7:15 p.m., Zinema 2 presents the new coming-of-age picture directed by Aza Jacobs, Terri. The film stars John C. Reilly as a school principal who shepherds the wayward.

Terri (Jacob Wysocki) is having a hard time. His Uncle is  more or less comatose and  he suffers a ton of ridicule from his classmates due to his weight problem. Chad, played by Duluth’s own Bridger Zadina plays Terri’s miscreant sidekick, who has a nasty habit of scratching his scalp. (more…)

Winter Outdoor Settings

What are PDDers’ favorite winter outdoor settings? I am looking for a nature spot, that is fairly accessible in the the winter (1,000-foot walk at most), one that doesn’t necessarily have a dramatic view (it would be a plus though) but the setting should be fairly dramatic with rocks, trees, or waterfalls. The setting can be in either city but preferably up to 20 miles outside of the Twin Ports. I am getting married in the winter and I am looking for a spot to hold a very small and very short outdoor wedding.

Recommendations for Duluth Brake Mechanic?

Does anyone have any recommendations for local brake mechanics, ones that are honest/non-skeevy, but also can solve a braking-system mystery that four other mechanics have been unable to fix?

First off, I hate my car and wish it were a phoenix that would burn, and from the ashes would produce a new car. I don’t believe this is a standard feature on a Kia, so I’ll have to keep this piece of crap limping for at least another year or two (you may recall my prior bitching regarding this car).

Second, I’m afraid that if this mystery doesn’t get solved, you’ll find me and my Kia at the bottom of the lake sometime this winter.

Anyone have any good suggestions? Thanks!!! I really appreciate your advice (randomly stabbing at the yellow pages isn’t getting me anywhere).
