Here comes Christmas! On Friday the Christmas City of the North Parade starts its route in Canal Park. If you can’t make it, you can still catch the action by watching it on KBJR-TV channel 6 and online at northlandsnewscenter.com. The seasonal frivolity doesn’t end there for the weekend. Bentleyville’s opening night is on Saturday. This year there are more lights than ever before and, as always, free cookies and hot chocolate. Other events going on this week:

The local DJ collective Crunchy Bunch spins at the Rex Bar. Bare Bones, a student choreographed dance performance, starts tonight and also plays tomorrow.

Minnesota group Motion City Soundtrack plays at the Reif Center. The Harbor City Roller Dames are back in town going against the Babes of Thunder from Thunder Bay, Canada.

Small Visitors
Some pals are visiting from Seattle next week. Their kids are 3 and 6, I think. We don’t have kids, so we’re not sure what amuses them. What are some cool Duluth things we could do that would be interesting to both kids and grownups? I’m thinking Hartley Nature Center, throwing rocks into the lake, maybe the harbor tour. What else might delight them?

Here’s an actual photo of a letter that someone I work with received this week. She was just going through the drive thru minding her business when the car in front of her paid for her coffee and egg sandwich, anonymously. It definitely brought a smile, which I guess is the whole idea. (more…)
Gay bars, spurs, gaming, tomatoes and other random Duluth-related matters
Here’s a bunch of reasonably credible information that I didn’t have time to delve into for details this week, so I present it as a clump of bullet points (with arrows as bullets).
- There are plans in the works for a gay bar in Downtown Duluth on First Avenue West.
- There’s a rumor floating around that another bar will open in the same vicinity. It will have a Western theme and be called Spurs.
- Tycoons is still several weeks away from opening, but is shaping up to be one of Duluth’s most unique dining and basement-cave drinking experiences.
- A new shop for gaming opened in West Duluth on Nov. 1. Dungeon’s End is across the street from Beaner’s Central.
- There also appears to be some kind of indoor- “tomato”-growing shop opening on Central Avenue, right next to 101 Deals. It’s called the Interior Tomato.
- Trampled by Turtles and the Minneapolis-based band Motion City Soundtrack are releasing a split 7-inch record together on Nov. 21 in which TBT covers an MCS song and vice versa.
- Cloud Cult has recorded a cover of the Beatles song “Help!” for the Minnesota Beatle Project Vol. 3 album. All the proceeds will be donated to enhance music and art education programs in Minnesota public schools. The album is scheduled for release on Dec. 6.
- Cloud Cult has also contributed a new song to a compilation benefiting the Children’s Hospital of Minnesota (no release date yet).
- Walter Raschick is the new director of the Homegrown Music Festival. The previous director, Shana David-Massett, moved back to Florida in October.
- Kristin Duckart is the new executive director of the Duluth Art Institute. She replaces Samantha Gibb Roff, who left Duluth to become director of development for the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania.
- I’ve heard no reports on whether Upper Lakes Foods has found a manufacturer to produce Connolly’s Tom and Jerry Batter for this holiday season, but we should see it in stores in the next two weeks if it’s making a comeback.

Join Duluth Energy Efficiency Program’s Team!
Minnesota GreenCorps, an AmeriCorps Program coordinated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is currently accepting applications for one full-time energy conservation corps member in Duluth. This position will serve 1,700 hours at ~ 40 hours weekly from late November 2011 into September 2012. Member benefits include a biweekly stipend, optional health insurance, student loan forbearance and $5,350 award to apply toward eligible student loans or for continued education.

Duluth 2011 General Election Results
Congratulations to new city councilors Jennifer Julsrud (pending recount), Garry Krause (returning to the council after time off), Linda Krug and Emily Larson.
For the School Board, the winners are incumbent Judy Seliga Punyko and newcomers Michael Miernicki and Bill Westholm.

How’s Business?
I am wondering how Duluth small businesses are fairing during The Great Recession. I’d like to hear from business owners, employees, the self-employed , the unemployed, etc. How is business compared to, say, ’07? How are you adapting? I’m really curious about this, and I don’t want to start an overly-political thread here. So, how’s business, Duluth?

First Chairs of the Season?
I’m curious if anyone has dates of estimated chair-lift openings at area [and by that I mean “day trip”] alpine hills? Lutsen was rumored to open on the 19th of November and Big Powderhorn is scheduled to open the 10th of December.
Any advice on where to look for early-season runs?
Parks and Libraries Referendum
The Duluth Parks and Recreation Department has lost full-time and seasonal employees due to budget cuts over the last few years. Because of the cuts, the maintenance of the parks and trails in the city has relied heavily on the work of volunteers.
“It’s a nice partnership. I can’t say enough how wonderful our volunteers are,” said Kathy Bergen, Parks and Recreation manager.
Even with the help of volunteers, some facilities in the parks have fallen in to disrepair and the programs offered through the parks system have all but disappeared. The Parks and Libraries Referendum on the Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 ballot looks to help repair the parks facilities and revive some of the programs that have been lost due to budget cuts.

There are two art events going on Thursday night. The Duluth Art Institute hosts a night of art, free drinks and free food at the Depot. The Gallery Celebration showcases artists from the Ochre Ghost Gallery. The Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault (PAVSA) will hold an art auction at Clyde Iron with dinner and desserts, live entertainment and community ally awards. Intergalactic Nemesis at St. Scholastica is a live-action graphic novel featuring three actors providing sound effects, voices, and music.
Friday, Nov. 11
Manheat, Junkboat, and the Acceleratii take over Luce for an album release show. If you’re looking for a laugh, three local comedians will do some stand-up at Aces in Superior.
Saturday, Nov. 12
Four actresses and four musicians interpret the words and music of Patti Smith, Tina Turner, Loretta Lynn and Belinda Carlisle in Celebrity Autobiography at The Play Ground. Get your fill of deliciousness and vote for your favorite at the 4th Annual Wine, Beer and Pizza Competition at Midi. If you’re able to make it out of the door when you’re done, No Bird Sing, Chastity Brown Band and Gallus will be at Luce.
