Pavement

Now can we talk about greening up some of these vast swaths of concrete? Let the rainwater seep into the ground instead of running down the streets, pooling in the parking lots?

Flooding in Duluth and North Shore

Duluth Flood Arial

Rain, rain, go away. With 6-8 inches of precipitation in the past 18 hours, flooding in Duluth and the surrounding area has caused serious problems for everyone. With more rain on the way things are probably going to get worse before they get better. I have been personally fighting a flooding basement, but feel fortunate that is all I have had to deal with. I am wondering if now is the time to start building an ark?

Duluth Gas Prices

So what is up with the price of gas in Duluth? ($3.75 this a.m. @ BP and Spur)…yeah, yeah I know we’re a tourist town and Grandma’s Marathon just packed their bags and left but seriously, the national average is $3.53 and Sam’s Club has gas this morning at $3.47 (for those so inclined). Talk about getting hosed.

The American Outlaws: Duluth Chapter

I’m trying to gauge interest in forming a local chapter of the American Outlaws. What are the American Outlaws you ask? The American Outlaws are a national group of people who support both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Soccer teams. Sometimes you’ll travel to games, however most time is spent reveling in national pride watching the match at a local pub. Currently, the nearest chapter is in St. Paul, where they routinely draw 100+ people to watch matches.

What are the top-five bands or music acts in Duluth?

Everyone loves a list so I was thinking of asking what people thought about the top 5 bands or music acts in this area. Not your personal favorites, but the top of the charts if we had charts. Getting a crowd and having great music.

I was thinking:
5. The Acceleratti
4. Toby Churchill
3. The Little Black Books
2. The Black-eyed Snakes
1. Trampled by Turtles

This week: camps, hats, rhubarb, art fair, and a little list

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

Local summer camp programs are starting up. Here’s a rundown of what’s starting this week:

Make a hat! You’ve read about Emily Moe’s hat class here and in the DNT, now you can start making your own hat on Tuesday.

The acronyms among us are busy:

In case you needed more art in your life head out to Park Point for their 42nd Annual Art Fair this Friday and Saturday.

DTA needs help on Restoration Project

The DTA (Duluth Transit Authority) has an ask of the community to help restore a vintage 1939 Twin Coach. This 1939 Twin Coach was donated to the DTA on December 5, 2001 by former Duluth School Superintendent, Mark Myles. The Twin Coach sat idle for many years in the woods before the DTA project assumed ownership and began the restoration project. When completed, the Twin Coach will be show-cased in local parades and events. Do you have time to help restore this 1939 Twin Coach?  See Jim Brown at work during weekday mornings. Efforts are currently being made to organize volunteers for the coming year. Any donations helpful: tires, time, etc.

Orthodontal violence

My wife had her first orthodontal consult, which began with “we’ll remove these three healthy teeth…”

It made me think I could use some PDD hive mind recommendations and maybe some first person accounts. Help?

Jim Carlson is running for President?

Is this part of the Zombie Apocalypse?

News From MPLS

Just Take Action (Brewhouse, Tycoons, et al.) to open a Brewhouse-esque restaurant in the old Trocaderos in MPLS.

Broken car windows — 3:30 a.m. 6/12 — Lakeside

I heard that several cars had windows smashed early this morning, on/near Colorado Avenue in Lakeside.

Do you know these people?

From Craigslist today: (https://duluth.craigslist.org/for/3068327775.html)

Found 1GB memory card in a purse from Goodwill. Do you know these people? I thought that they might want their pictures back.

Look what I found!!

Yes, friends, (perhaps I’m the last to know, but) they’re here. Are other people seeing these nasties? I saw this one downtown last week. Are there other sightings? This could be fun! Who wants to plot the push-pin map? Tent caterpillar hotdish recipes??

Lost Shelti Collie in West Duluth

Lost our Sheltie Collie around Denfeld area Sunday around noon. Her name is Ella. She is wearing a pink collar with tags and is microchipped. She is very timid and shy. Please call 590-6894. I will post picture when I figure out how to.

Local Chocolate?

I’m in a bit of a quandary; I’m hoping y’all can help!

Long story short, I need to send a gift to a friend overseas. My go-to gift is baked goods — her normal present was gluten-free banana bread. But my friend recently developed a fructose intolerance along with both lactose and gluten intolerances (oh, the horror, right?) That means the bananas in the banana bread are right out.

That leaves me with very limited options. What I’d really like to find is some locally made chocolate, the darker the better. Does anyone know a local store (within MN and WI, anyway) that makes delicious dark chocolate that would survive being shipped to Germany? Or, does anyone have any better ideas on things to send?

I’d appreciate any help I can get!

This week: books, a sing-along and 26.2 miles

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

It’s like a literary Easter egg hunt! The Duluth Public Library Annual Book Sale begins Tuesday and goes through Friday. Break out those elbow pads and queue up.

Sing-along with Dr. Horrible and Buffy at the Joss Whedon Sing-along at the Zinema 2 on Wednesday.

Maria Bamford comes home to Duluth this week and performs at Mitchell Auditorium on Thursday, but you can also see her hobnobbing with Jeff Anderson at a fundraiser on Tuesday at the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe.

And, oh hey, so this next weekend there’s this quaint little foot race going on. Grandma’s Marathon runs this Saturday, so pull out your lawn chairs and renew your acquaintances with your pals who live on London Road. You can head down to the Big Top in Canal Park for music Friday and Saturday by Haley Bonar, G. B. Leighton, Retribution Gospel Choir and more.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!`

Duluth changes school hours

Why oh why are they changing the elementary school start time to 7:45? I have a son in the autistic spectrum, and getting him to class by this years start time of 9:15 has a challenge!

They now dismiss at 2:15! Great news for us working parents out there. I just got my work schedule to work with the “old” hours and now I have to change everything once again.

I am rapidly losing confidence in the Duluth School Board. Red plans, selling buildings for $1, then raising taxes, and now this.

Rethinking “Incidents”

The show at the Duluth Photography Institute, by Kip Praslowicz, reminds me of how many filters I bring to the viewing of photography. I look at some of these images and I feel like I have seen life caught in action — akin to the Muybridge photos that helped us understand what photography could see that painting could not. I look at others and think: the people in the shot have paused for the creation of art. The photos, in the second case, are closer to portraiture. (more…)
