NorShor tower to return

Remember two-and-a-half years ago when we speculated about bringing back the old NorShor tower?

Apparently, the speculation is over.

Developer: NorShor Theatre’s tower marquee will rise again

The story seems to indicate the tower will be built from scratch rather than refurbished, which leaves open the question of what happened to the original tower.

Canoe Repair in Duluth

Being Duluth has been recognized as the Outdoor mecca we all know it to be, it seems someone around here would do canoe repairs. Does anyone know of someone who does? I have a Tripper that needs patching and I don’t have the know how or the space. Any help would be great.

Mountain biking at Mont du Lac

Mont du Lac Recreation has been building mountain bike trails that are amazing. Last summer a shuttle was offered to take riders from the bottom of the trails to the top. This summer promises to be an amazing one as well, with shuttle dates to be announced.

Homegrown T-Shirt 2013

Finally had time to prep Chris’ t-shirt art. This is the art for the band, volunteer and pre-sale shirts.

This week: fonts, cats and ides

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

Today Sarah Brokke opens a new exhibit at Zeitgeist Arts or you could go to a gallery discussion at the Duluth Arts Institute.

On Tuesday you can get all sans serif at the Zinema 2 with a screening of Helvetica, the last movie in their Gary Hustwit design trilogy.

What should we do with Rockridge Elementary? You can chime in with your ideas on Wednesday in an open meeting at Portman Community Center.

Cats opens at the Duluth Playhouse on Thursday and runs for two weekends. Also opening that night is How I Learned to Drive at UMD and it runs through the end of the month.

Friday is the Ides of March and in Duluth that means a series of concerts where bands pay tribute to their musical influences. The series starts on Friday at Lake Avenue Café and heads to R. T.’s on Saturday and concludes next Friday at Pizza Lucé.

Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate, including:

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

I am so sick of people using Skyline Parkway outlooks as dumpsters…

The latest asshole person to do so? Someone with bundles and bundles of Budgeteer papers and ads that decided to toss them off the overlook (for unknown motives; I’ll keep my hypothesis to myself). As I was walking my dog today I stumbled upon this disgusting site.

Help me smoke meats

I want to build this barrel smoker I found on Reddit, but I don’t know where to find a 55-gallon food-grade drum. Since everyone was very helpful with my sticker question I figured I would tap the PDD well again.

One might even say “perfect.”

Where in Duluth?

Duluth is where the heart is. Where in Duluth, MN?

Bonus points if you can figure the swatch of land that the heart covers. I’m stumped on the scale there, but at a minimum I’m thinking Proctor and maybe Esko and a township or three.

Old Duluth Photos on Shorpy

While watching Lost Duluth 2 on WDSE-TV (great show!), I wanted to pass along some awesome old photos that have been scanned in very high resolution and submitted to the wonderful archive site shorpy.com. Anyone who likes looking at good historic photos of Duluth will love these large images. Most of these were taken in 1905 and were published by the Detroit Publishing Co. using glass negatives.

Has anyone recently looked at the Unfair Campaign?

There are a bunch of posts promoting radical leaders who advocate racial genocide on the Un-fair Campaign’s Facebook page! Yipes! Is this what Duluth has come to?

If you’ve heard enough about the Duluth music scene, maybe it’s time to read up on the Iron Range music scene. The Current recently profiled Rich Mattson’s Sparta Sound.
