The world is mud-luscious
Duluth’s Parks and Recreation Dept. has issued its annual plea to the public to refrain from using city hiking trails, snowmobile trails and cross country ski trails until the mud dries up. Refer to the 2010 PDD post “Where to hike in Duluth when it’s muddy,” for guidance.
If you enjoy the mud, well, the Mudman Race will be held at Spirit Mountain on July 20. It features 5k and 10k courses with obstacles to “test strength, endurance and mental fortitude.” So, in addition to mud, you better enjoy hopping over hay bales and climbing through a spider web of ropes.
Just to tie this all together, it bears mentioning that Mud Sisters Pottery will open a new exhibit at Washington Studios on May 10 called “Mud Madness, Mud Magic, Mud Sisters.” It features a collection of functional and decorative pottery, and sculpture in clay and bronze.
Pasture-raised Spring Chickens
The Twin Ports is great, but it’s lacked something – a commercial source of local, pasture-raised meat birds. We heard your cry.

Off Street Parking?
My wife and I own a home with 2 vehicles, and no off street parking. This can become a pain when we want to leave town for a long weekend and the sides switch on Sunday. I haven’t done too much investigating, but is there a decent solution to having to be back on Sunday night to move it, aside from selling a vehicle, asking someone to move it for us or taking the parking ticket? Is there a local lot that has a reasonable rate for several days of parking? Anybody anybody?
Sadness About Wisconsin Point
I was wondering if anyone had any information on the following:
My uncle, Bob Miller, has been an advocate for protection of the Indian burial ground located at the end of Wisconsin Point and has been working on this project for over ten years. My ancestors are buried out there and the foundation from my great grandmother’s childhood home still remains. We are descendants of Chief Osagie who owned the land before selling it to Wisconsin (he’s my greatx5 grandfather). Many of us go out there to perform ceremony and the land is held sacred by all local Anishinaabe people. (more…)

Lost Cat in West Duluth Area
Missing long-haired white cat with orange markings on his face, ears and tail (also has some very light orange on his back), has blue eyes. Missing since April 28 from the West Duluth area, specifically Raleigh St & S. 61st Ave. W., and has not been seen since.
His name is Raja, he’s 3 years old, neutered, has his claws and is not microchipped. He is very missed by his family and also needs his medication.

Lost Dog: Dakota
Dakota is a well-known dog around town — a Husky/Shepherd mix. He pulled out of his collar on May 3 in the Lincoln Park Area and took off running. He is very friendly and sometimes has a lot to say. Homegrown Kickball Classic 2013: ‘I can’t see the base because it is covered in mud, like my eyes.’
Friday pitcher Chad Lyons arrived at the field 45 minutes early, presumably to claim the field for his team in some sort of ceremonial ritual that involved his old high-school soccer cleats and a cigarette.
It worked. Friday took the 2013 Homegrown Kickball Classic, 7-5.
Rainy conditions throughout the week forced the game to be played away from its usual location, Chester Bowl. After a 20-minute search for car-floormat-bases, the action was underway at Observation Park.

Long-term renting in Duluth
Where do professional types rent long-term in Duluth? Are there any rental complexes beyond that Boulder Ridge development that would be appropriate for an incoming UMD prof? Biking to campus would be a bonus. A sabbatical house-sitting-type gig would be okay if there was some room to store stuff. Where does one look for rentals of houses these days? Realtors (or friends of realtors) let me know if you have any ideas on rentals/rental agents. Trying to help an incoming UMD prof find a place to live at the end of the summer.
UMD student tells stories of poverty, homelessness through photography
During the past few months, LakeVoice reporter and UMD student Daniel Badhwa set out to learn more about the issue of homelessness within the Duluth community. With a camera in hand, Badhwa explored the city, talking with people he encountered. Several of the people Badhwa photographed and interviewed shared stories of their current struggles with homelessness, but not all identified themselves as homeless.
His project, featured on the student-run community news magazine, LakeVoice, includes a video, produced by Badhwa, that describes how he went about this project and what he learned both about himself and society. The article he wrote shares some of the intimate portraits Badhwa captured as well as stories from Duluth people living on the margins.

There will be a Centennial event at Sky Harbor this summer from July 12-14.
Weather postpones annual native tree sale
It’s not just warm-blooded creatures who are cold this spring. Plants are shivering down to their roots! So, the annual South St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District tree and shrub sale pickup dates have been postponed by one week. Same place, same time, but all one week later. New sale pickup dates are May 16 to 18. See southstlouisswcd.org for details.

Music Resource Center students produce music videos
MRC students produced two videos this spring with help from the UMD Participatory Media Lab. Hannah McDaniel, a senior at Harbor City International School, recorded, filmed and produced this video for her song “Welcome Guest.”
The MRC kicked off a month-long fundraiser last night at our HGMF MRC Showcase. The goal is lofty: $10, 000 for new instruments and recording equipment. Please consider donating to this incredible program here.

I’m looking to hang a poster to promote music gigs, and I’m working on a list of places to hit. Where do you notice posters hanging in town? In short, where are you standing when you notice posters?
Park Point Ferry
You might have seen the news story on a University of Wisconsin-Superior feasibility study of a water taxi between Barkers Island and Park Point. In what’s old is new again, I remember hearing of a ferry that used to run between Superior and the end of Park Point, when a community of summer cabins existed out there. But I can’t find any information on it, such as when it operated and where it docked on either the Superior or Park Point sides. Does anybody know where I can find any information on that?
Lake Superior Sandstone
I remember a while back, there was a discussion about sandstone quarrying and that some quarries had records of notable buildings that were constructed from their stone. I just attended a meeting of the Heritage Preservation Commission in Minneapolis tonight where the Sumner T. McKnight mansion on Park Avenue was nominated for a historic designation study. It is constructed out of Lake Superior sandstone. I couldn’t help but to wonder if there is any quarry records that correlate with this building. Would anyone know how to find the answer to that?
Bullhorn Permit??
One of my buddies was horsing around with a megaphone this weekend – he was announcing an impromptu ski race. The police showed up and told him that he needed a “megaphone permit” in order to OWN a megaphone [perhaps he meant “use”?]. Anyway – we have been reviewing the city permit page and can’t find the requisite paperwork. Should the authorities have referenced a different regulation? Anybody have experience with this?
