Facebook and Twitter Login on PDD

There were problems this week with the WordPress plugin that allows PDD users to log in via Facebook. In geek speak: “Facebook changed its API login procedures, which broke the plugin.”

We have a new plugin running now, so, if you are the sort to log in via Facebook instead of creating a PDD account the old fashioned way, please give it a try and let us know if you have problems. The new plugin also allows logins through Twitter. (If you are not logged in you can click either social icon below to launch. If you are logged in, you won’t see icons below.)

[oa_social_login]

A few polls opened this week that those of you who log in with Facebook had been excluded from until now. They are still open, so there’s still time for that.

Note: Logging in will not allow you to purchase health insurance from Perfect Duluth Day.

Glensheen’s Spooktacular Tips

You probably know that Glensheen is hosting a display of 1,000 Jack O’ Lanterns starting tonight. It’s a gorgeous presentation and it’s one of those few events that is actually fun for adults, as well as children. No trick or treatin’, no costumes – it’s more a visual celebration of autumn.

But, PDD’rs here’s a little inside baseball for you.

– Try to walk if you can; parking in the Glensheen lot is a bear. There’s construction going on that’s taking up part of an already smallish lot.

SATURDAY ONLY: There’s a shuttle from UMD’s Lot W running about every 20 minutes.

City proposal to privatize 17 Park Point street-ends?

I’m wondering if anyone has heard of the city proposal to “privatize” 17 Park Point street-ends? Maybe this is old news?

Below is a letter from Dawn Buck, president of the Park Point Community Club, from this month’s Breeze of Park Point newsletter:

Before Big Daddy’s Burgers …

I’ve been to Big Daddy’s Burgers in Piedmont a couple of times and liked it, I need to go again sometime. However, I have a memory of another diner, an even smaller one, just next door to Big Daddy’s, (to the left at the end of the building). When I was kid, likely in the mid-to-late 1980s, my Grandma took me there when we were visiting my Great Grandma at Viewcrest nursing home. I may have only been there once, maybe twice, but it made an impression, mostly due to it’s size, it was the very definition of a hole-in-the-wall diner. There was a lunch counter that ran most of the length of it, the cook made the food right behind it, I don’t think there were even any tables, just the counter since it was so small.

Does anyone remember this place, the name, and I know this is stretching it, but perhaps pictures? It’s just one of those childhood memories that has stuck with me, and I’d love a little history? Thanks in advance!

This week: spoooooky stuff – like curling and city planning

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

There’s a whole lot of Halloween going on in this town this week with haunted ships, shacks, houses, a terror train and a scary aquarium.

Ever want to learn to curl? The Duluth Curling Club is holding Curling Clinics on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Give your input on the reconstruction of Superior Street at a community meeting at Greysolon Plaza on Tuesday.

Zinema 2 continues its “Silent Film, Loud Score” series with Portrait of a Drowned Man scoring L’Inferno, a 1911 silent film based loosely on The Divine Comedy on Friday and Saturday.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

Saving the Great North Woods

No doubt that many in the PDD audience have already read the “Saving the Great North Woods” cover story in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. For those who have not, it is certainly worth a look.

Self Portraits While Checking Camera Settings, Summer 2013

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4JTNx_YMTQ

Every time I turn my GoPro on to check the settings, it takes an accidental self-portrait. I junked the first ones before realizing these random shots could function as a record. So this is what summer 2013 in Duluth, MN was like, which I spent dressing as Aquaman and recreating in the water.

Perfect Lunch Restaurant: Northern Waters Smokehaus

When it comes to lunch in Duluth, the sandwich is king. Not one pizza place, burger joint or Asian restaurant managed to crack the top four in Perfect Duluth Day’s poll to determine the best lunch restaurants. Furthermore, the place with the best sandwiches in town, Northern Waters Smokehaus, smoked the competition. A solid majority of 55.4 percent of voters agreed Northern Waters is the best mid-day meal around.

Clearly the deliciousness is no secret — there’s almost always a noon-hour line at Northern Waters.

Minerva Zine Day

I publish a free feminist zine every few months and distribute it around Duluth and Superior. I’ve never posted on PDD before about it so I thought I’d try to spread the word. You can find Minerva zines around town at places like Duluth Coffee Co., Electric Fetus, Jitters, Pizza Lucé, Double Dutch, Carmody Irish Pub, Thirsty Pagan Brewing and Red Mug Coffeehouse.

The goal of Minerva is to empower women, educate, and encourage consciousness raising on issues relevant to us by the use of art, collage, images, and words. We strive to promote women to share and value their writing about individual stories and diverse experiences.

If you have more questions or are curious about our fringe publication (with very limited funds and copies), please check out minervazine.com. Peace.

The next six categories to be voted on will be:

  • Best Pizza Restaurant
  • Best Burger Restaurant

  • Best Vegetarian Restaurant

So spout out your nominees for all six categories in the comments here, and we’ll start the voting when it seems like you’re about done.

Duluth Trading Co Flannelytics

The Duluth Trading Company has just posted a new blog post regarding the Top Flannel Cities in the US. I am already a tad prejudice toward them since their connection to Duluth is in name only. Now, seeing they don’t even mention Duluth, Minnesota as a flannel locale, I am even more opposed to their co-opting our city name. One would think they would at least try to open a retail store here, instead of only in southern Wisconsin and the Twin Cities area.

Duluth Little Free Library Guide

It’s been more than a year since the first post on Perfect Duluth Day about Little Free Libraries, and the trend seems to be growing. So now it’s time to update the list and include some photos to show what’s out there.

Little Free Libraries, of course, are boxes full of books where anyone may stop by and pick some up or drop some off.
