Park Point fox too friendly?
Last night we had a very interesting encounter with a sweet little fox. The fox went to run in front of our truck and then changed it’s mind and cowered on the side of the road. I then grabbed out my handy dandy camera to photograph him. At first he was a little farther away and as I was snapping away he started running at me! I was actually a bit scared and I hurried up and hopped in my truck. He didn’t leave, he lingered right by our truck. It seemed like he needed or wanted something from us. I was wondering if he was hungry and looking for food. I felt that the situation was abnormal. Thoughts?

DECC Casino?
On the agenda for next week’s Duluth City Council meeting is a resolution requesting the state legislature “amend state gambling laws to provide for the operation of a for-profit casino at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center or other location within Duluth.” (Update: Councilor Howie Hanson has told the Duluth News Tribune his proposal will likely be tabled and later taken up at a committee-of-the-whole meeting.)

The End of Streetcars in Duluth
Streetcars ran in Duluth for the last time on July 9, 1939. Streetcar service had been gradually phased out by trolley buses for nearly 20 years before meeting its total demise.

Coyote Pups
Look who came to Wildwoods last week … a little “song dog” pup (aka coyote)! He was found by himself when he was about 3-4 weeks old, and has been raised by humans since. (more…)

Comic Andy Kindler comes to the Teatro Zuccone stage tonight followed by a Q&A and screening of two episodes of “Bob’s Burgers” downstairs at Zinema 2.
I can’t make her love me if she don’t, but Bonnie Raitt plays the Big Top on Tuesday.
The musical Pippin, presented by Lundeen Productions, opens on Wednesday at Harbor City and runs three weekends.
Sidewalk Days are going on downtown starting on Wednesday and closing with a big street dance on Saturday. And if you haven’t been walking on closed off streets enough for one week, you can Meet in the Streets in Lincoln Park on Sunday.
Movies in the Park starts its new season Friday night with Brave at Leif Erikson Park. (Note: This event has been postponed.)
On Saturday Greece comes to Marshall and craft beer goes to Lutsen.

Yoerg’s Brewery
On this date 165 years ago — July 6, 1849 — Bavarian immigrant Anthony Yoerg opened Minnesota’s first brewery in St. Paul.
Interesting side note on Yoerg’s Brewery: In 1871 the operation moved to a spot adjacent to the Lilydale caves. Yoerg used the natural caves to store his product, and added the phrase “cave-aged” to the label. There are a number of places online to read about Yoerg’s Brewery, but of particular interest is the Substreet underground history site, which profiles Yoerg’s lost cellars.

Lost Iron Range
For your Independence Day pleasure, one hour and four minutes of Iron Range history from the fine folks at WDSE-TV.
The persecution of Jews in Russia and Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century led many to flee to a safer place where they could build a future for their families. America was the land of opportunity and Minnesota’s Iron Range in particular was booming with the mining industry. The Range was also a place where a mosaic of ethnic groups was building communities without fear of prejudice. Subsequently the Iron Range saw a large influx of Jewish settlers.
Anyone else having major dropping issues with Sprint?
Up until two weeks ago I haven’t had much problem with Sprint, but now I literally cannot make a phone call in my own home without the call dropping. I called Sprint and they said they were working on their towers and it could be another month or two until finished and they could take $20 off my bill. Wow, $20 and I can’t even use my phone. I should also mentioned I have been with them for ten years and have four family members on this plan. No thanks! Needless to say I will be canceling my service with them. I was just wondering if anyone else has been able to use their phones?

The article was brought to PDD’s attention because it contains a quote by Duluth’s John Ramos, who also graces this website with various posts and comments.

What would you have done?
On Monday my family went to the first sandy beach at Park Point. When we were done enjoying the scenery and the water we began to pack up our car. There was another family packing up its car, but the adult woman in the car was swearing at the three young children who were under 5 years old. It was not just a few swear words, but a vulgarity-filled yelling directed at a child who did something that the adult deemed unacceptable. There were other bystanders, but no one said anything.
I rolled down my window and was about to speak up for these poor kids, but then I thought about how the adult in the car might own a gun or be carrying. It has bothered me ever since and is making me rethink my views on firearms. I’m wondering what some of you would have done. The three kids stood outside the car and looked so sad. I thought about when they enter our schools and swear in class because of the example they were given. This was right here in our town and I felt powerless because everything I am reading about says that carrying a firearm is what everyone should be doing.

Duluth 2014 Primary Election Sample Ballot
Below is what the Primary Election ballot will look like on Aug. 12 if you live in House District 7B — the western part of Duluth. If you live in District 7A or 3B you’ll see different House races, but those candidates are unopposed within their parties anyway.
This is a “Partisan Primary Ballot,” so voters must choose a party — Independence, Republican or Democratic-Farmer-Labor — and vote a straight ticket for that party. Follow this link for a more complicated primer with links to candidate websites.
Endion Station Public House opening soon
Endion Station Public House is opening July 25. It will serve pulled-meat sandwiches and Brewhouse beer in the historic train depot on the Lakewalk, and there are plans for live music on the patio.
Any Upset Duluth folks dislike Hobby Lobby?
I’m tired of reading blogs and Facebook posts about the most recent court ruling won by Hobby Lobby to refuse its female employees basic women’s health care and discriminate against decisions that should be made with a medical provider. I’ve organized a local protest to create awareness to the local store’s shoppers. We will be there the next three mornings at 9 a.m. until about noon with signs. This week: soccer, brits, fireworks and sad songs
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Sure, the World Cup is going on in Brazil, but it’s Sweden vs. U.S.A. right here in Duluth when a bunch of teenagers from our sister city, Växjö, Sweden, play soccer against some of our kids at Stebner Park today through Wednesday.
It’s the season for outdoor concerts. St. Anyway plays at Chester Bowl on Tuesday as part of the Chester Creek Concert series and Hairball plays Bayfront on Thursday.
You can celebrate the July 4th weekend with a British invasion by watching a special screening of the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night at Zinema 2 on Friday and then see American English, a Beatles tribute band, at Big Top Chautauqua on Saturday.
Of course, there’s a big concert and fireworks down at Bayfront on Friday.
How do you deal with a break up? Well, if you’re Rachael Kilgour you sing sad songs and invite people to a concert at the Teatro Zuccone on Saturday.

Local musician Jack Campbell just released a new free single “Drive” with a video by Lakefront Films and he’s doing a crowd funding campaign through Fundrazr to make a full length record.
Big ol’ snapping turtle on Duluth’s Western Waterfront Trail
Here’s an opportunity for someone who knows a lot about turtles to show off and tell us all what specific kind of snapping turtle we are looking at here. It was spotted around 2:30 p.m. today lolling around by that nice little swampy nook just west of Indian Point Campground.
Help with Duplicator
No, I’m not trying to copy myself. I have a Model 70 Conquerer Spirit Duplicator which I am trying to figure out. I have never used one but am interested in how the machine works and would love to get this one back in action. If anyone could share some knowledge or point me in the direction of some good resources I would greatly appreciate it.
Woodworking supplies in Duluth
I’m trying to find aniline dye to use on wood. Google’s failing to find me anything local, but the results seem to suggest I need a woodworking supply shop. Is there such a thing in town? Google’s failing me on that search, too.
Happy eleventeenth birthday to us
Perfect Duluth Day is eleven years old today – Sunday, June 29, 2014. The official celebration is at Carmody Irish Pub tonight at 8 p.m. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the top finishers of this week’s Pub Quiz, the questions for which will all be related to PDD. It’s a super tough quiz, so study intensively.
