From the guy who brings us the annual All Hockey Hair Team, here’s an abbreviated rundown of what was flowing at the Minnesota State Fair.

Trampled by Turtles performed the Bob Dylan classic “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine on June 30.
Lanue – “Fire in My Mind” aboard Papa Gaucho on Lake Superior
Sarah Krueger goes sailing with Jerree Small, Alan Sparhawk and Emma Deaner in the new Lanue video for the title track of the 2022 EP Fire in My Mind.
The video was shot last fall by Keely Zynda with sound and additional editing support by Ethan Gibbs.
Steve Solkela – “Son imbrogliato io gia”

Alan Sparhawk Band Live at Minnesota Music Month Showcase
Alan Sparhawk performed at Radio Heartland’s Minnesota Music Month showcase at First Avenue in April, backed by Al Church on drums and Cyrus Sparhawk on bass. The set featured the songs “Stranger,” “Get Still,” “Can U Hear” and “I Made This Beat.” Sparhawk’s upcoming album White Roses, My God releases Sept. 27 on Sub Pop Records.
Ian Alexy – “Angeles”
“Angeles” is the fifth video release from Ian Alexy‘s new EP of cover songs titled Campfire Extraordinary. The song “Angeles” was originally written and recorded by Elliott Smith.

Alan Sparhawk – “Get Still”
“Get Still” is the second release from Alan Sparhawk‘s upcoming album White Roses, My God, scheduled for release Sept. 27 on Sub Pop Records. The video was directed by Ingrid Weise.
Cloud Cult – “One Human Being”
The fourth video release from Cloud Cult‘s new album Alchemy Creek is for the song “One Human Being.” The video and artwork are by Annabelle Poppa.

Indecent Proposal – “The Cage”
The latest video from Duluth band Indecent Proposal was shot on the S.S. William A. Irvin ore boat museum. The featured actors are Kelly Killorin, Stuart Gordon and Danielle Thralow.
The Slice: 114 Years of Split Rock Lighthouse
Split Rock Lighthouse‘s 114th anniversary was celebrated on July 26 with special tours and a lighting of the beacon. The annual anniversary event commemorates the first lighting of the lighthouse’s beacon, which took place on July 31, 1910.

Wildrose: 1984 film shot on the Iron Range

Stunning footage of a lynx in northern Minnesota
Trail cameras from the Voyageurs Wolf Project will occasionally capture footage of lynx, but the University of Minnesota researchers say “this is definitely the coolest.”
Charlie Parr – “Ten Watt”
“Ten Watt” is from Charlie Parr‘s 18th album, Little Sun, released earlier this year. The video was directed by Adam Jones of Polecat Productions.
Superior Siren – “Rattlesnake”
The single “Rattlesnake” is the first full-band release from Superior Siren since 2018. The song has been in the band’s repertoire for years, but was recently re-imagined with the addition of Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Erin Aldridge. The video is directed by Illy Killy with videography from Chris Linder of Lakedrop.

Every day at FinnFest the Saami Cultural Center is presenting “The Story of Akanidi, Daughter of the Sun.” I’m super-proud of my colleagues at UMD and around the region who work with the center.

Duluth’s Ian Alexy has a new EP of cover songs titled Campfire Extraordinary. “Little Lies” is the third video release from the EP. Alexy’s rendering of the Fleetwood Mac song is accompanied by visuals from two old D. W. Griffith films — What the Daisy Said (1910) and The Mender of Nets (1912).
Wolves Howling in Winter in Northern Minnesota
The wolves of Voyageurs National Park have a new hit single, captured during a live performance last winter. The two segments of this video offer sights and sounds of the howlin’ Minnesota wolves.
This trail-camera footage is from the Voyageurs Wolf Project, which is focused on understanding the summer ecology of wolves in the park.
