Kuwaiti vlogger visits Duluth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCOScS2uxv0

Bader Alabkal of Kuwait takes a trip to Duluth with his pals Qutiba bin Yahya AlHashemi and Yousef AlMunaies. The first stop is Minneapolis; they hit Duluth after the 5-minute mark.

As often happens, the tidbit that Lake Superior is the largest lake in the world gets tossed around with some uncertainty. For clarity we note it is considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area.

John’s Red Lion Bar closed on Aug. 31, 2007, after more than 35 years in business. The building at 220 E. Superior St. has pretty much always been a bar. It was built in 1910 to house the Albert Salter Saloon. From the early 1950s to late ’60s it was the Two-Twenty Lounge. Before it became the Red Lion, it was briefly the Diamond Lounge. (more…)

Northern Pacific Ore Dock in Allouez

At Loon’s Foot Landing in Superior’s Allouez neighborhood, near the mouth of the Nemadji River in the Allouez Bay Channel, stands the remains of the Northern Pacific Ore Dock — built from 1912-13; abandoned by 1970. In July, Liftoff Aerials sent the PDD Drone up to have a bird’s-eye view of the old concrete-and-steel structure. (more…)

The Weird Thing

What is… The Weird Thing? It can be seen bobbing up and down in the water just off Duluth’s Lakewalk, between Fitger’s and the Vietnam Memorial. Could it be… the 125-year-old ruins of Duluth’s first breakwater wall? Spoiler Alert: (more…)

Searching for a Distressed Citizen’s Lost Glasses in Lester River

I got a distress call the other day. A citizen fan of my Lake Superior Aquaman page wrote me saying, “While swimming in the Lester River (at the spot where it’s like a little swimming hole, right before the first bridge that leads to the park) my husband dived off one of the rocks and lost his glasses. Another younger boy lost his goggles… what are the chances that they fell into the bottom of the hole made by the waterfall? We tried to go down but I couldn’t see or hold my breath that long lol.” So I offered to help, for am I not … Lake Superior Aquaman? (more…)

I met Dozer and his owner Ian yesterday at Duluth’s epic rock beach, the Ledges. Ian’s buddy was also named Ian, and in addition to jumping off rocks as shown, he instagrams here @ILVisuals. Dozer was remarkable for his enthusiasm for swimming and for biting waves.

Almanac North: The Wall that Heals

The traveling “Wall that Heals” was set up on Barkers Island in Superior July 20-23. It features a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., together with a mobile education center. WDSE-TV cameras captured the arrival of the wall, the opening ceremony and local reaction.

Deeper Fish Cam

Not much happened for 45 minutes at 15+ feet deep, but I did get this. Going back today! This is the area shown in this video where there is a channel between two giant boulders. I wedged the camera-on-a-stick between some rocks and left it there. Lots of boat traffic not too far away and that is the noise you hear. Fish Cam pt. 1 here.

Traditional Summer Diving Montage

From the Lester River Bridge to Uncle Harvey’s Mausoleum and various other Duluth locations, it’s diving season — also known as “give mom a heart attack when she sees your dangerous stunts on the internet season.”

This montage was put together in the summer of 2016.

Of course it must be noted that pretty much every summer there are serious injuries, and occasionally deaths, resulting from dives into Duluth bodies of water. Be careful out there.

Mike Watt at the NorShor Theater: “Eyegifts From Minnesota”

The documentary Eyegifts From Minnesota, by Bill Draheim, follows Mike Watt and his band at the time, the Jom and Terry Show, as they drive into Duluth and load in for a performance at the NorShor Theater on May 28, 2002. They tour the old R. O. Carlson’s bookstore, do some sightseeing in Canal Park and spend the night at Shaky Ray Records before heading south for shows at the Turf Club in St. Paul and the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.

Watt wrote extensively about the tour, and the Duluth stop, on his “Our Oars Became Wings” Tour 2002 Diary. He marvels in the diary and in the film about seeing Lake Superior for the first time. He also mentions in the diary getting a tour of “the secret tunnels” under the NorShor and how it “feels haunted down there.” (more…)

Tree Life

My favorite tree in Duluth hangs right over the lake at the water’s edge, down below Leif Erikson Park. It’s a great place to bring a cup of coffee and get some living done.
