Scuba Diving at “The Deeps”
YouTube user “MNduro USA” brought a scuba tank to Amity Creek and searched for treasure in the swimming hole known as “The Deeps.” “There were a lot of craw fish, trout and I spotted a Goby down there!” he writes in the video description. “Kody, the river guide, wanted to jump off the cliff … so we did!”
Knife River Documentary
Justin Christopher Ayd and Jennifer Lillemo Ayd of H8C Productions in Minneapolis have been working on a documentary about Knife River, a small community about eight miles northeast of Duluth. The trailer above reflects the quiet tone and style that will characterize the completed film.

Martin Ledin – “The Coldest Season”
Martin Ledin, a musician based out of the Bayfield Peninsula, released this music video last week for a track from his self-titled 2017 album. The video was created during a live performance at his album release party last fall. It features Ed Willet on cello and Dane Hauser on percussion. The video was directed by Kjell Kvanbeck of True Norse Films. The sound engineer was Ryan Rusch.
Ledin will performing this Thursday ahead of King Cardinal at Blacklist Artisan Ales. The show starts at 9 p.m.
The Slice: Robot Rickshaw
In its series The Slice, WDSE-TV presents short “slices of life” that capture the events and experiences that bring people together and speak to what it means to live up north. The pieces are created by WDSE-TV and submissions from viewers.

Facing lynchings from Duluth to Montgomery
From MPR News: Two guys named Carl walked onto a bus last month in Duluth, one black, one white. One of them was Carl Crawford, the other was Carl Huber. Together, they traveled to Alabama to visit the new memorial to the victims of lynching, and they became friends on the journey. After they returned, they talked together about what the trip meant to them.

During the Duluth Yacht Club’s Wednesday Night Races a boat was pulled into the Aerial Lift Bridge, nearly flipping the boat before the mast broke.

Bear cub sneaks into Duluth basement, trapped in laundry basket
A black bear cub fell into a Duluth basement through a window. Homeowners Linda and Abdon Friend chased it around. Police officers trapped it in a laundry basket and set it free.

Duluth dances the “Nelken” line
Responding to a worldwide call by the Pina Bausch Foundation, dancers from Duluth made a short video based on Bausch’s “Four Seasons” choreography from the 1982 piece Nelken. With just a few distinct gestures, the dancers describe the four seasons — spring, summer, autumn and winter. (more…)

The Brothers Burn Mountain – “Lord of Night”
The Brothers Burn Mountain have recorded a new album at their off-the-grid cabin studio in northern Minnesota. Blue Spruce is slated for release this fall. The single “Lord of Night” features Ryan Young of Trampled by Turtles on fiddle and Colleen Myhre on backing vocals.

Selective Focus: Ten Years of Homegrown Music Video Festival
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Homegrown Music Festival and 10 years of the Homegrown Music Video Festival. Participants in the video fest are assigned a random song by a local band and usually have a few weeks to put together a video. Over the past ten years, there have been videos with found footage, lip-synced performances, dolls, puppets, pets, animation, just about anything goes. (more…)
Video Archive: Surfers Before the Blizzard, 2008
High-definition videos of people surfing Lake Superior have become a fairly regular thing on Perfect Duluth Day in recent years. The short and fuzzy one above lacks the quality we’re used to these days, but is featured today because it’s ten years old and might be the first Lake Superior surf video published on PDD — or maybe anywhere else. (Prove that assertion wrong and find an older one.)
Barrett Chase posted this clip on April 10, 2008. He noted winds were at 40 m.p.h.
“Check out this short video snippet of some crazies surfing on Lake Insanity near Lester River today just before the onset of the blizzard,” he wrote.
