Childhood memories lead to future inspirations
Etta Glinsek is a junior at the University of Minnesota Duluth majoring in environment sustainability and geography and minoring in environment and outdoor education. She is working toward graduating in spring 2026 and a career in the environmental field.
This semester, Glinsek is taking the class Nature Interpretation. Part of the coursework is to create a plot study, finding an area where the student can study and observe nature. Glinsek has chosen an area in Bagley Nature Area near a stream in hopes that it will create a more diverse environment. Her goal is to help preserve the environment and find a job that will allow her to do it.
Swimming in Duluth
Summer is fast approaching, which means warm weather and swimming. With that in mind, my video “Swimming in Duluth” has been attracting attention in recent national and international online festivals and even garnering a few awards.
Pronoya – “All for the Sun / Eclipse”
Pronoya has a seven-song EP coming out later this year. The band’s new music video features the tracks “All for the Sun” and “Eclipse.” The video was produced by Infinite Film Productions and features actor Joseph Langan.
JamesG – “Winning Hand”
Former Duluthian James Geisler plays the cards he’s dealt in the video for his latest JamesG track, “Winning Hand.”
Lana Del Rey gives Duluth cold props
Last summer Lana Del Rey received the National Music Publishers’ Association Songwriter Icon award in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. Her acceptance speech included a brief mention of Duluth. (more…)
Wolf pack howling into the wintry darkness
The Peatland Pack, the largest pack of wolves in the Voyageurs National Park area, was caught on a trail camera this winter howling in chorus. The main wolf that is standing up howling in the clip is the breeding female of the pack, and three others show up on camera, but the pack is composed of at least nine wolves.
The video is from the Voyageurs Wolf Project, which is focused on understanding the ecology of wolves in the park.
Emily Haavik – “If I Were a Ghost”
Duluth native Emily Haavik has a new single, “If I Were a Ghost.” The acoustic video was shot by Charlie Steen.
Emily Haavik & the 35s play at the West Theatre on April 30 as part of the Homegrown Music Festival.
The Slice: Warrior Printress
Warrior Printress Letterpress and Design is a Duluth print shop that uses new and old technology. Janelle Miller works a printing press that is more than 100 years old. Stacie Renné stacks letters into a frame one at a time while creating a new piece.

Beautiful day for a bike ride on a 1000 footer
What’s the best way to get around on the 1000-foot Stewart J. Cort? Bicycle, of course. This video was shot in Silver Bay on March 31.
Sleeping Steel Giants
The Soo Locks, gateway to Lake Superior, opened March 21. The St. Lawrence Seaway’s 67th navigation season officially began March 25. The start of the Great Lakes shipping season is also the end of the period when cargo vessels are docked for maintenance and repairs. This aerial video offers views of the winter layups in Sturgeon Bay, Superior and Duluth.
Arctic Bound: Sailboat Nord Hus arrives in Grand Marais
The 36-foot sailboat Nord Hus cast off from the Knife River Marina near Two Harbors on March 31 with a crew of four and temperatures hovering around 11 degrees. The first stop on the journey was Grand Marais. Explorers Lonnie Dupre and Pascale Marceau and crew plan to sail the Nord Hus from Grand Marais through the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway and follow the Canadian North Shore to Newfoundland, eventually reaching the arctic channel between Elsemere Island and Greenland. The crew will be conducting a variety of scientific observations in collaboration with global partners. (more…)

This video for a track from Charlie Parr‘s 2015 album, Stumpjumper is part one of a two-part visual story produced by Polecat Productions. Actors in the video are Sadie Katz and Lance Lindahl. The video was directed by Lindahl and edited by Adam Jones.

Duluth Mayor Roger Reinert gave his second State of the City address on Tuesday at the Ordean East Middle School Little Theater. The speech highlighted accomplishments in 2024 and previewed challenges and opportunities the community can expect in 2025.

Duluth East Symphony Orchestra – “Rabbit of Seville”
This video intertwines a March 13 performance by the Duluth East Symphony Orchestra of Gioachino Rossini’s 1816 opera buffa The Barber of Seville with cartoon footage from the 1950 Looney Tunes short Rabbit of Seville.
The Slice: Making Seed Mosaic Art
The Seed AfFAIR is a meetup for people interested in crop art, the environmental art practice of using plants and seeds to create images, usually by gluing them to a background. The AfFAIR part of the name references the goal of entering pieces in the Minnesota State Fair’s juried competition.
The group began meeting at the start of 2024 and has been featured twice on The Slice; the 2025 part-two video is above, and the original 2024 video is below. (more…)

Minnesota All Hockey Hair Team 2025: No Biz Like Flow Biz
Lettuce, camera, action! The bright lights once again were shining in St. Paul, and mullets were on the marquee. This year’s All Hockey Hair Team takes on a Hollywood theme as John King and Pulltab Sports offer up another montage of the best hair from the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, handing out some Osc-Hairs for best supporting salads and best leading lettuce.
