Modest Home Makeover

Last summer/fall, the Extreme Makeover Home Edition TV show came to town to build a new home for the Huber family in South Range. It was a wonderful thing, but several commenters on this website wrote that those efforts should continue without all the TV cameras and didn’t need to be so extreme.

A little something called Modest Home Makeover was started around that time, with the goal of raising $150,000 to build a new home for Rick & Brenda Hallfrisch. Fox 21 News did this story about it …

I bring this up now because volunteer meetings and fund-raising events are coming up soon. You can read about all of them at modesthomemakeover.com.

P.O.W. David Wheat’s return to Duluth

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U60XKjmiQw0&feature=player_embedded

A tip of the hat to Andrew Krueger at the News Tribune Attic for spotting this Feb. 7, 1973, WDIO-TV broadcast on YouTube. Nice to have you back in the attic, Andrew.

David Wheat, many of you may remember, was a prison mate of John McCain’s in North Vietnam and campaigned for him in 2008.

This video includes cameos by pre-toupée Dennis Anderson and Mayor Ben Boo, among others. An hilarious ad for “Pringle’s Newfangled Potato Chips” is at the end.

Anyone around here see this last night?

Sen Al Franken Resurrects “Duluth Answer Man” to Support Twin Ports Google Fiber

MARCH 10, 2010 – Minnesota Sen. Al Franken has joined The Google Twin Ports Fiber Initiative by resurrecting his Duluth Answer Man clips.

Duluth’s campaign combines a fun and creative grassroots campaign with a very serious effort to build a strong business case for bringing Google Fiber to the Twin Ports.

The Duluth Answer Man campaign was produced in the mid 80s by the Duluth Convention and Visitors Bureau, known today as Visit Duluth. The series ran in the Twin Cites market as the summer tourism campaign for Duluth.

Countdown to spring

The ski hill at Chester Bowl is scheduled to stay open through this weekend, but it looks like Mother Nature may not be patient and cooperative. Already this weekend, the creek started flooding the bottom of the hill. So if you’re interested in taking or watching a waterskiing run at the Bowl, today might be your day. The lift is open from 4:30 – 8:30 tonight (Monday 3/8). The next scheduled day the lift is open will be Thursday, but that’s a long way away. Lift tickets are $5 at the concession stand. While you’re there, pick up a nifty Chester Bowl Hoodie or long-sleeve T-shirt at the concession stand.
