Hair Pride?

For all the beards and mustaches raised in Duluth this fall, I expected more of a bang for the end of M’ovember harvest – the epic month of facial hair. Was something posted somewhere? A gallery?

I do some freelance work for SwimCreative and see they posted this video of Mike Malone getting a classic shave on their Facebook page.

Duluth got a mention in this 2010 Ted Talk by cell biologist Mark Roth: Suspended Animation is in our Grasp.

More specifically he mentions the miraculous case of Janice Goodger

There was a 65-year-old woman in Duluth, Minnesota last year that was found frozen and without a pulse in her front yard one morning in the winter, and they brought her back to life. The next day, she was doing so well, they wanted to run tests on her. She got cranky and just went home.

Barack Obama vs. Dennis Kucinich and Michael Moore on Libya

This dramatizes the pie fight on the left that erupted over Libya.

If you view it on its YouTube page here, the brief title sequence plays too but you get the idea.

Community Meetings: Duluth’s Plumbing Needs Big Fix

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Cul30R0z-A&feature=player_embedded

Water is a basic need. Access to clean water and a well functioning system are responsible for good public health, public safety, basic sanitation, and economic prosperity. The strength of our economy is directly connected to the strength of our infrastructure.

Learn about the current state of our drinking water infrastructure; our water treatment plant, pumping stations, and over 400 miles of water mains. These are our common assets and we need to ensure they work for us.

Drive thru difference letter - Life 97.3 FM Duluth

Here’s an actual photo of a letter that someone I work with received this week. She was just going through the drive thru minding her business when the car in front of her paid for her coffee and egg sandwich, anonymously. It definitely brought a smile, which I guess is the whole idea. (more…)

Wild Bill Cooper documentary coming soon

One of my hobbies a few years ago was researching the adventures of “Wild” Bill Cooper, which resulted in an article for Minnesota Monthly that focused on his criminal history and purported demise.

Filmmaker Mike Scholtz picked up where I left off, and is producing a feature-length documentary that tells the whole Wild Bill story. In addition to the trailer above, there’s a Wild Bill’s Run website and Twitter feed. You’ll have to wait a few more months to see the final product, though. Watch for updates.

Superior Skatepark 2011

I’m not sure how many of you on here enjoy watching skateboarding, but here is a montage from this Summer that my friend and I just released. I just thought I would post it to show some of the hidden talent that exists here in the Northland. All of this footage was filmed at Superior Skatepark. Filmed and edited by Mike Rapaich and Joe Hegberg.

Ennyman’s Blog explains local artists Emily Herb and Tonya Borgeson, who will exhibit works in the category of “surfacing” this week at Pizza Luce. I learn about art every time I check this blog.

We Love Duluth

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbptB-awG2o

Duluth is a special place. You know that. I know that. Duluth knows that.

We decided to document that fact by spending one day talking to random people in Duluth. We conducted the same basic interview over and over again in different locations for about 8 hours, and then set out to create a three minute video. Hours of film were eventually whittled down to six minutes that we want to share with you now. We hope you like it.

Occupy Duluth Rally Video

Occupy Duluth with SkatRadioh and Sharla Gardner

This was video I shot on Saturday while covering the Occupy Duluth rally for my Reader story featuring local concert poster artist SkatRadioh. I originally went to get a T-shirt made with the design he came up with the night before. I was impressed with the speakers and City Council President Sharla Gardner’s speech.

I stole the music in the opening from the RNC 2008 convention protests in the cities.
