What does this sign mean?

I realize this might be a dried-up glue-like substance that held some actual sign in place, but I don’t know, maybe this symbol means something to snowmobilers. If not, we might as well make up a meaning for it.

Any place in the Duluth area that is kosher?

Port City Supply

Duluth’s Cody Paulson has a new photo blog called Port City Supply, which aims to explore Duluth’s curious aesthetic, which Paulson says “falls somewhere between industry and nature.”

It’s like 50 “Where in Duluth?” posts at once, with some scattered familiar scenery interspersed.

UMD Makeouts

Yes, there is a Twitter page dedicated to posting photos of University of Minnesota Duluth students making out. It’s called UMD Makeouts, sporting the hashtag @UMD_makeouts.

Predictably, most of the photos are poorly shot. Some of them highlight cute little lovebirds, but more of them fall into the raunchy, drunken or questionably consensual categories.

Activity on UMD Makeouts seems to have dramatically slowed since mid June, either because of summer break or because good taste sometimes prevails over trends.

Cindy Vu wrote a commentary in March about this subject for the Statesman. PDD apologizes for not latching onto this saucy tidbit until five months after it was hot.

Art (class) becomes reality?

My wife and I were having the usual musings on current society over dinner last night. We were barbecuing and she still had on her iconic McIlhenny Company Tabasco Sauce apron at the table.

Somehow the conversation turned to the smocks we had used in art class as fourth graders. These were the brown, excessively thick vinyl ones that were festooned with others’ clay frustrations and misguided painting experiments.

As I pondered this, of course my mind wandered to how this could fit into a business opportunity. The thought of mega retail in America came to mind, and the image of the stereotypical subculture of the unmentionable Walmart shopper we all know and shun — those who still find Zubaz a viable fashion statement and forgot to not sleep in their Crocs last night.

That’s it! Smocs! (Say it whilst tilting the head slightly and gurgling like a 1940’s radio character.) It could be the next huge retail trend — and not just a short-lived fad, but addressing a real need to promote the lifestyle shall we say by averting those unnecessary food droppings that mark up clothing, etc., and allowing a whole generation to sleep in their clothes for weeks on end.

Rubberized industrial Smocs in bright colors for any occasion could make for an excellent business opportunity. Might even globally increase the sale of pressure washers as well.

Help us with a theory

The other day, a friend and I were talking on Facebook about personality types according to Myers-Briggs and we noticed that, just in our circles of Duluth friends, there’s a huge proportion of one type of Myers-Briggs personality.

We then wondered if this was just coincidence or does Duluth have a larger-than-usual percentage of this relatively rare personality type.

So we’re turning to you all to help.

Please take this test (it’s free) and then post your results and the city in which you live. Thanks!

What to do with extra garage door panels

If you really want to know why I have two extra garage door panels, go ahead and ask. For now, I’ll get to the point. What I find to be really annoying about having two perfectly good garage door panels is that it seems the best thing I can do is haul them to a junk yard and get them out of my way. Tell me if I’m wrong.

Is there anyone who warehouses stuff like this and sells them to contractors or the general public? A new panel costs $220 — that’s $440 for two — but the odds that someone who needs the exact size and color panels I have will search Craigslist and find out I have them for cheap are minimal. So these panels are likely to hit the dump by the time the snow falls, unless I get ambitious and recruit two friends to help me carefully feed them into the rafters so they can waste space up there for 20 years.

Jim Carlson: the drink

Rim a glass with an orange slice and sugar (designed to look like bath salts). Pour some Jim Beam high-proof bourbon in the glass. Light that badboy with a match to caramelize the sugar. Shake some “spice,” a.k.a. cinnamon, into the fire and watch the sparks fly. Add Kahlua, coffee and cream.

Nightly disruptions in Lakeside

Has anyone else living in the Lakeside neighborhood heard the nightly “pows” around 9:30 p.m. for the past week or so? Seems like a few of them go off each night sometime between 9-10 p.m., which has been making my gun-shy dog pretty anxious, barky, etc. Any idea what the noise is or where it’s coming from? It sounds a bit like far-off fireworks, which around July 4 seemed normal, but still going off and at around the same time each evening has me wondering.

Car sharing options in Duluth?

I’m back in lovely Duluth for the summer, and am wondering if there are any car sharing options yet. I don’t own one since I work abroad and am only here a couple months each year. I’m getting used to having access to things through collaborative consumption models like Zipcar. Anything here yet?

Where in Duluth?

This one seems to have the Where in Duluth? Facebook group stumped. I’ve been kind of stingy with hints, though. I’ll tell you what I told them: 1) It’s outside. 2) It’s farther west than Kemps Dairy in the West End.

Ok … go!

Duluth sanitary sewer repair estimate

So we received a while back information telling us that we would need to repair our existing sewer line because of inflow and infiltration along with other neighbors. The city of Duluth does provide a grant for these projects (80 percent of $4,000 to $5,000). We were looking at lining the sewer line rather than excavating it.

However, we called the same company (they were the lowest bidder for the project) as our neighbors did and got an estimate that was nearly $2,500 more than the estimate they gave them!!!

I’m sure others in Duluth have dealt with this, or are dealing with the same situation as myself. Ideally I would like to get a ballpark figure of the expense and the company any of you chose for this project. Needless to say we will be calling around.

Weekend ice skating during the summer

Does anyone know if there’s any open skating on weekends in the Duluth area during the summer? I work 8-5 during the week so I am unable to get to any open skating unless it’s on the weekends, or in the evenings on weekdays. Thanks!

TV stations afraid of the word “vibrator”

Renegade Theater Company has been having trouble landing interviews on local television stations for their upcoming play, In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play, because of the word “vibrator” in the title. The odd thing is that other plays that have dealt with subjects as diverse as incest, menstruation, torture, murder, marijuana, drug use, and so on have had no trouble getting airplay.

So, Duluth media, what’s that all about? Why does a vibrator scare you more than any of these things? Why the sudden prudery?

Found: Mountain bike in Lakeside

There was a small mountain bike found off of Superior Street near East High School on Tuesday night, June 5. I saw it when I left home, and it was still there when I returned hours later. It was missing the seat post and looked like it has been dumped.  I picked it up, assuming it was stolen. If you lost a mountain bike, or if I inadvertently stole yours, let me know.
