What to do with extra garage door panels

If you really want to know why I have two extra garage door panels, go ahead and ask. For now, I’ll get to the point. What I find to be really annoying about having two perfectly good garage door panels is that it seems the best thing I can do is haul them to a junk yard and get them out of my way. Tell me if I’m wrong.

Is there anyone who warehouses stuff like this and sells them to contractors or the general public? A new panel costs $220 — that’s $440 for two — but the odds that someone who needs the exact size and color panels I have will search Craigslist and find out I have them for cheap are minimal. So these panels are likely to hit the dump by the time the snow falls, unless I get ambitious and recruit two friends to help me carefully feed them into the rafters so they can waste space up there for 20 years.

Jim Carlson: the drink

Rim a glass with an orange slice and sugar (designed to look like bath salts). Pour some Jim Beam high-proof bourbon in the glass. Light that badboy with a match to caramelize the sugar. Shake some “spice,” a.k.a. cinnamon, into the fire and watch the sparks fly. Add Kahlua, coffee and cream.

Nightly disruptions in Lakeside

Has anyone else living in the Lakeside neighborhood heard the nightly “pows” around 9:30 p.m. for the past week or so? Seems like a few of them go off each night sometime between 9-10 p.m., which has been making my gun-shy dog pretty anxious, barky, etc. Any idea what the noise is or where it’s coming from? It sounds a bit like far-off fireworks, which around July 4 seemed normal, but still going off and at around the same time each evening has me wondering.

Car sharing options in Duluth?

I’m back in lovely Duluth for the summer, and am wondering if there are any car sharing options yet. I don’t own one since I work abroad and am only here a couple months each year. I’m getting used to having access to things through collaborative consumption models like Zipcar. Anything here yet?

Where in Duluth?

20130627-192023.jpg

This one seems to have the Where in Duluth? Facebook group stumped. I’ve been kind of stingy with hints, though. I’ll tell you what I told them: 1) It’s outside. 2) It’s farther west than Kemps Dairy in the West End.

Ok … go!

Duluth sanitary sewer repair estimate

So we received a while back information telling us that we would need to repair our existing sewer line because of inflow and infiltration along with other neighbors. The city of Duluth does provide a grant for these projects (80 percent of $4,000 to $5,000). We were looking at lining the sewer line rather than excavating it.

However, we called the same company (they were the lowest bidder for the project) as our neighbors did and got an estimate that was nearly $2,500 more than the estimate they gave them!!!

I’m sure others in Duluth have dealt with this, or are dealing with the same situation as myself. Ideally I would like to get a ballpark figure of the expense and the company any of you chose for this project. Needless to say we will be calling around.

Flood Damage/Recovery

This little MPR piece with Derek Montgomery’s photos is the coolest.

Just saw this on the Facebook. Pretty cute dog. Must have an owner. Read all about here.

Where in Duluth?

I’m giving no hints. If this goes unsolved, so be it.

Where in Duluth, the trashy version

This is from today, FYI. And it all sits in my recycling now. You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!

Weekend ice skating during the summer

Does anyone know if there’s any open skating on weekends in the Duluth area during the summer? I work 8-5 during the week so I am unable to get to any open skating unless it’s on the weekends, or in the evenings on weekdays. Thanks!

TV stations afraid of the word “vibrator”

Renegade Theater Company has been having trouble landing interviews on local television stations for their upcoming play, In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play, because of the word “vibrator” in the title. The odd thing is that other plays that have dealt with subjects as diverse as incest, menstruation, torture, murder, marijuana, drug use, and so on have had no trouble getting airplay.

So, Duluth media, what’s that all about? Why does a vibrator scare you more than any of these things? Why the sudden prudery?

Found: Mountain bike in Lakeside

There was a small mountain bike found off of Superior Street near East High School on Tuesday night, June 5. I saw it when I left home, and it was still there when I returned hours later. It was missing the seat post and looked like it has been dumped.  I picked it up, assuming it was stolen. If you lost a mountain bike, or if I inadvertently stole yours, let me know.

The Largest of the Duluth Apostrophe’s

I don’t remember if this one has been added to the database yet here. I took this photo about a year ago, and noticed the sign is still up this week for all of I-35 traffic to see.

Who in Minnesota?

In a twist on our usual game of “Where in Duluth?” we instead ask, in reference to the photo above, who in Minnesota? The image above was shot circa 1970 near what is now Elm Creek Park Reserve, a 4,900-acre park straddling Maple Grove, Champlin and Dayton, near Osseo.

On the right in the photo is Gary Lund, former owner of Gary’s Place, a bar in Carver. These days Gary’s Place is Lisa’s Place, where there will be a benefit for Gary on June 1.

But who is that on the left? He is famous enough that you should know.

Thirties scene in Duluth?

I am wondering where people in their 30s go out for a few drinks in Duluth? I’m not interested in the college scene.

BWCA or Bust

The husband-and-wife photography team of Dawn M. LaPointe and Gary L. Fiedler have a pretty sweet online photo gallery. The canoeing snow-people in particular caught my eye. LaPointe and Fiedler have work on display at two Duluth stores — Duluth Pack in Canal Park, and the Frame Corner & Gallery downtown.
