Mac repair in Duluth?

If anyone knows of a good Mac repair person in town, I’d sure appreciate the contact info.

Recommend concrete contractors in Duluth

We need to replace a poured concrete front porch stoop and would appreciate any recommendations for a contractor or company in the area with a solid track record and reasonable pricing for this type of thing. Any specifics of your experience with local people who do such work might be very helpful. Caveats and nightmare tales of such residential concrete work gone wrong might also be instructive. Thanks so much!

Wine Tyme Winery in Superior

WineTyme

This winery recently began operating out of an old convenience store near the Choo-Choo Bar in Superior. It’s called Wine Tyme Winery, and is owned by Tom and Linda Anesi. The address is 4932 E. Second St.

They make wine from kits (for example, the Winexpert brand) and also sell the kits so you can make wine at home. Stop in and try a sample.

Tom said he also plans to sell beer-making supplies there in the future.

Duluth roofing and siding recommendation

I am looking for recommendations for a good contractor/company to put on roofing and siding on my mother’s house in Duluth Heights. She has had two bids (Miller and William K) but I’d really appreciate some insight from the PDD community. Thank you!

Duluth Doctor Recommendation?

I’m looking for a general practitioner in the Duluth Clinic system. I am in need of a new one, and was hoping someone might have a good recommendation. I would prefer someone in the SMDC network since all of my records are there currently. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Excuse Me, Princess CD Release

Hey guys n’ gals! We just released an album, and through Monday, it’s a freebie if you download from here:

excusemeprincess.bandcamp.com

Otherwise it’s on iTunes and will be at Electric Fetus by the end of the month and all that good stuff.

Give it a listen!

School Supplies

I’m wondering if anyone knows of any Twin Ports organizations or businesses that collect school supplies for low-income students or local classrooms. Cleaning out the office yielded a plethora of unopened packages of lined paper, pencils, etc. They won’t be used here, so I figure I’d drop them off if they’re being collected somewhere. Thanks for your help!

Site for small reception in Duluth?

I’m in search of a unique venue for a smaller wedding reception of around 80 people in Duluth. Something other than a typical hotel banquet room or similar is preferred. Perhaps a restaurant? Your ideas and info are appreciated!

Duluth area wedding and reception

My sister is getting married Feb. 26. We are having trouble locating a venue that can accommodate approximately 300 people, let us cater our own reception and allow music and alcohol. Does anyone have any suggestions for possible venues?

Advice (and strong pain meds) wanted!

My back normally hates me, but now it’s hating me with a lot more angst than usual. Can anyone recommend a good chiropractor for a neck fix-er-up?

I’m hoping to find someone who can make my vertebrae play nice with each other, but not have them try to sell me some new-age hoo-haw or convince me to show up twice a week for the next few years. Thanks!!!

GPS Help

I’m thinking about getting a handheld GPS. We’d use it hiking, maybe try geocaching with the kids and when paddling. So if was waterproof and usable in the car, that’d be great, but not necessary.
Anybody have recommendations or have one they want to get rid of?

Duluth Transmission Shop?

My clutch pedal started binding on the way to work today (lame). I haven’t had to have any transmission/clutch work done so I’m at a loss as to where to go. PDD, recommend me a shop!

Online Meds?

Does anyone out there in PDD land have experience buying legit prescription meds online? Ideally some place inexpensive and trustworthy, of course.

The Ojibwe Experience – Learning Opportunities

This week I had a chance to glimpse some of the immense cultural riches of the Ojibwe people who along with other Native American people have occupied this area for thousands of years. And you can check them out too, if you want.

iPhone App Suggestions

Heading on a family trip with a four year old and a seven year old.  Suggestions for educational or entertaining iPhone apps for the kids would be appreciated.

Duluth Dentists

My former dentist retired recently and the dentist who took over his practice seems to me like he’s running a scam.  After a couple of questionable experiences, I won’t be going back.  I have plenty of friends who love their current places, but it seems like those dentists are all on the verge of retirement themselves.  So, I turn now to PDD for advice.  I am seeking a dentist who:

  • Is currently accepting new patients
  • Is not planning on retiring in the next 5-10 years
  • Is good with children
  • Won’t try to scam me on prices or leave my mouth worse off than before I went in

I never understood why people hated going to the dentist until I encountered a true scumbag years ago during an insurance switch.  While most of the dentists I’ve had have been wonderful, I’ve seen the other side, and no sir, I don’t like it!  So tell me please, who makes you smile?

New York Times: Theater of the Variegated

Map of Downtown from "36 Hours in Duluth" New York Times 8.05.05

“36 Hours in Duluth, Minn”

9) Theater of the Variegated

You never know what to expect at the Historic NorShor Theater (211 East Superior Street, 218-733-0072), an oasis of culture in a scruffy section of downtown. Opened as the Orpheum in 1910 and later remodeled in Art Deco style, the timeworn Norshor is part movie theater, part concert hall, part performance space, part art exhibit hall and part whatever whim strikes the management. One July weekend featured a showcase of local and Twin Cities bands; the next included all-day showings of “Dr. Strangelove.”

Local poet Connie Wanek in New York Times book review

Local poet Connie Wanek’s most recent collection, On Speaking Terms is reviewed in today’s “Poetry Chronicle,” in the New York Times book review.

The end of the review says, “Nobody will call Wanek overly difficult. The most attentive readers will call her wise.”

Here’s to local wisdom without pretensions saying poetry needs to be difficult to be meaningful. I look forward to reading the new collection — you should too!

Happy Record Store Day

Today is the third Saturday in April, which means that it’s officially Record Store Day. The way to celebrate Record Store Day is to go check out your local independent record stores, which in the Twin Ports means either the Electric Fetus or the Vinyl Cave.

From the official website:

A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores-not online retailers or corporate behemoths).
