Out-of-towners who like to party want to know …
Where is the best New Year’s bash at (besides your house)? We are a group that are here on a long-term training assignment for “the man” (it’s corporate and will bore you). We only get New Year’s Day off and so are looking for the perfect place to celebrate/welcome 2013. We are a rainbow of colors/sexuality. Duluthians, please help … where should we ring in the new year? Forget dinner — it’s all about the cocktails and midnight.
Assignment: Have a PDD
I’m trying to decide if I should: a) wander around Rice’s and Connors points in search of the elusive snowy owl, b) ice skate up the St. Louis River, or c) visit the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center. Or maybe you have a better idea. I await your recommendation.
Meditation anyone?
I am looking for a meditation group in the Duluth area … anyone know of anything?
The Theater Formerly Known As Omnimax
I’m looking for more info on the old Omnimax and the D-Box experience. How does one get a D-Box ticket? What’s it like? How much does it cost? Is it worth it?
Bike Share
Wouldn’t it be great if we had a bike share like the Cities?
Or like Nashville?
And/or car share like Chicago?
It seems like programs that a community association would be great at administering.
24-hour eats?
My sister just notified me that the Perkins on London Road is no longer open 24 hours! The choices for all-night study sessions someplace other than a dorm room seem to be dwindling. Does anyone have suggestions for someplace that is open all night? Do we even have any 24-hour restaurants left in Duluth?!?
Asking for two pieces of advice
Two questions:
First: I am working with a journalism student on a news article and in it, the student mentions that a person used to work at a sporting goods store named CZ Wilson. Does that ring any bells?
Second: My daughter is an artist and has created watercolor paintings on seasonal cards (this is not an ad, don’t worry). Now, she would like to take those cards and have them printed on nice stock paper or whatever I really mean to say. Are there good local printers who do that work that people would recommend?
Thank you.
New Minnesota Cookbook
Does anyone remember Joe Huie’s Cafe and his incredible fried shrimp? I’m finding more and more interest in Joe and the Huie family history, and over the years I’ve searched for his “secret recipe” that I remember as a kid (so many claimed to have it, but of course no one did). Just today in searching yet again for any recipe that may be similar I came across this book from an article in the Duluth Herald.
It just came out in October and there are a large number of great reviews about it, but best it includes Joe Huie’s famous fried shrimp recipe, another family member’s recipe(s) (I haven’t ordered it yet so I’m not sure how many) and a lot of other well-known Asian restaurant recipes from over the years, plus a history of how the Asian influence changed Minnesota. I can’t wait to get it!
Last year in searching I came across a Joe Huie’s Cafe menu on eBay, in brand new condition. The seller lives in California and I live in Vermont, but we are both originally from Duluth. What a small world, and it was so cool to “talk” about the old days. Joe Huie’s is one of those iconic memories that brings me back to when I was a kid on Lake Superior. Great times.
Duluth Coffee Company
Downtown Duluth has recently been bestowed with a new coffee cafe and roasterie on Superior Street. Located at 105 E. Superior St., Duluth Coffee Company is founded by owner and roaster, Eric Faust, whose passion for coffee is obvious upon walking into the elongated cavernous space. For the unprepared, all your senses will be hit with coffee at its finest.

Duluth Pest Control Recommendations
We have a lovely craftsman in Lakeside we are renting out and they just texted telling me they’ve caught nine mice in four days. Yuck! And now I’m anticipating getting screwed over by an exterminator. I’m from Duluth and yet I’m viewed as an outsider because I’m not there to deal with this and I call from an out-of-state number. I need someone to figure out the point of entry and seal it up. Help fellow Duluth folk!
Duluth Carburetor Service
I am having some trouble with my 1986 Toyota pickup. I think it has something to do with the carburetor, but diagnosing the problem is beyond my limited mechanical skills. Since carburetors are not very common nowadays, I’m not sure where I can bring it for service/beta in Duluth. Know any good carb shops in Duluth? Or grumpy old men who fix things?
Where should I get my Christmas tree?
Does anyone know of a good place where you can chop down your own tree?
Styrofoam recycling in Duluth
I have a basement full of pieces of hard Styrofoam blocks in all shapes and sizes that I need to get rid of. I hate the stuff, but cannot bring myself to send it to the landfill, due to environmental concerns. I have six years’ worth of it and it is time to do something so I can reclaim the large area of my basement that is currently overrun by it. Does anyone know of anywhere local that I can bring this stuff where they can recycle or reuse it? I know shipping places take packing peanuts, but several have told me they do not take the larger pieces or blocks that come in the packaging of appliances. I thought I had heard something a few years ago about Lake Superior College having a recycling program for Styrofoam, but I have been unable to find any confirmation of this.
On a related note, I also have several very large pieces of cardboard (about 5’x3′) up for grabs. If anyone wants it let me know and you can pick it up in the Piedmont area.
Electrician needed
‘Tis the season for holiday cheer, large amounts of food, and obviously nasty electrical gremlins to pop up and bite us in the ass at inopportune times. We are currently experiencing a power outage to one part of our house. Whilst trying to locate the problem, we discovered that we still have old knob and tube wiring mixed in with newer wiring, even though everything is tied to a modern breaker. We have been searching high and low for a loose wire somewhere, but now fear that the old knob and tube wiring has finally just fried itself leaving us in the dark. Can anyone in the PDD community recommend a good local electrician with a vast knowledge of the old-school knob- and tube-style wiring?
It’s a sign
Here is a sign for all the sign readers here on PDD. A sign that actually explains how to properly use an apostrophe! Who knew?

Looking for recommendations for a buyer’s agent for the area.
PDD Gift Guide 2012
For the past few years, the gang at Perfect Duluth Day has pointed out gift options produced by the locals — from durable goods made by the region’s top manufacturers to cute little bags of cookies from the corner bakery. We feature 15 lovely items and encourage the PDD community to add to the ideas in the comments. (more…)
Beer Store Recommendation
Does the PDD community have a recommendation as to which liquor store has the best craft beer selection? I went to Cash Wise and while it does have a lot of beer and a big “single” selection for $8.99 a six pack, the variety isn’t that great. Warehouse had some different brews but the prices were outrageous. $3.99 for a Big Eddy Baltic Porter? I live close to Woodland Liquor but the people there actually get annoyed and snippy if you ask them a question about anything above Budweiser or Miller. Who has had the best luck and where?
Spooktacular
We attended the Spooktacular at Glensheen on Saturday. It was awesome. If you’ve not been, Sunday is another chance, and it’s worth every penny. Firedancer performs at 7, 7:30 and 8 p.m.
PS: Firedancer: Who recorded the music you dance to? It’s been a long time since I heard elektro-goth stuff like that.
Ski binding mounting
Let’s say a fella got an incredible deal on some skis and another incredible deal on some bindings (not in Duluth). Does anyone know of a person/place that can mount those? I’ll also check with the local stores, but I’m not sure they are in the business of mounting bindings/skis purchased elsewhere.
Leather
Does any know if there is a craft store that sells leather supplies? I used to get scraps of moose hide from Henry’s in Ely, but since his death the scraps aren’t available anymore.
Web Hosting in Duluth/Superior
Is there a decent local option for web hosting in the Twin Ports?
Asian grocery around the Twin Ports?
Is there actually an Asian grocery store (or anything resembling the sort) around the Twin Ports? The selection at Cub, Mount Royal and the two Super One Foods I visited is dismal at best. Perhaps I got too used to having Asian grocery stores within a ten-minute drive while I lived in St. Paul, but I can’t even find Golden Curry in a store around here. Any super-secret store I’m missing?
