Starving Artist Barter??

Dear Duluthians,
You might have seen some of my art at Bohemia Arts, and if not, please do come see it, because if you like it: I am hoping to trade existing paintings, commissions, and/or mural work for a) a decent bike b) a canoe in working order c) a kayak that floats and/or d) misc hauling equipment and useful accessories for said objects. Or other awesome stuff to trade for might be considered too…

Thank you kindly,

Pickup Baseball Game

Sunday, July 19 | 3:30 p.m.
Chester Bowl Park

That’s baseball, not softball. This is a pickup game for grownups who can’t remember the last time they felt the ol’ wood smack the cowhide. Pitches will be lobbed, not that anyone who can throw hard will show up anyway.

There’s nothing official about this game, I just got the invite and was told to spread the word. If there’s an organized youth soccer game or something else going on at Chester, the game might get moved to Woodland or something, so it might help to show up on time if you want to be in the know about a possible relocation.

News Tribune Cubicle Redux?

This story just went up on the News Tribune web site and I swear they are using the cubicles from their office.  I remember an earlier post that talked about the same things and this looks familiar except last time they took the image down fairly quickly. Am I crazy or am I right?

Feel Free to Talk about Me at Dinner- free reading

Feel Free to talk about Me at DinnerAfter the Friday & Saturday night performance of “Matt & Ben” at  Teatro Zuccone (Superior Street) stick around to hear Lucie Amundsen’s self-effacing stories of everyday drama.

Many of these works have been heard on Minnesota Public Radio and printed in Minnesota Monthly, the Star Tribune and other publications.

When Lucie is not actively embarrassing her family, she writes articles on everything from generators, faucet repair and how to make a lovely vase out of
corn husks.

(Matt & Ben Play is $15; reading after play is free and will start around 9pm)

Is there a story behind these houses?

Last night while driving on Arrowhead Road, I came upon a series of brick houses that all look alike. They are around Stebner Road and seem to be built in the 30s or 40s. They all seem to be on an acre or so of land and look identical. It seems that since they appear to be built in the 30s or 40s, they would have been out in the country when they were new. Was this an old housing development, kit houses or anything interesting or just a developer with one design?

Sale at my house this weekend!

Woman-Made: Marvelous Things Made by Northland Women

Mark your calendar – July 25 – new local art fair at the College of St. Scholastica

Stopover at Woman-Made: Marvelous Things Created by Northland Women on July 25.
This Art & Quality Craft Fair will be held on the last Saturday in July from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the College of St. Scholastica, Somers Lounge, 1200 Kenwood Ave.. in Duluth

This summer event (indoors, so it doesn’t matter what the weather is) will offer locals and tourists a spectacular place to shop for one-of a kind and handcrafted items made by over 25 local artists – all women.

Local made pottery, photography, artwork, clothing, sewn items, calendars, soap, water color art, fiber, books, as well as jewelry. It’s fun to see what moves people and the creativity flow that is alive and well in the Northland. Women-made items are a definite part of the businesses up here in the region and hand-made. Come to the fair and purchase plenty items to take home for yourself or as gifts.

A portion of the vendor fees will be donated to the YWCA Girl Power program.

Toxic Monster Mash at the Red Star 7/18

Get your monster on and support Nukewatch with DJ Focus. 10pm. Come as your favorite mutant or biologist. The bar is mixing up glowing martinis, and we’ll have a toxic barrel photo booth and prizes for most creative, most realistic and most uncomfortable costumes. Freewill donations at the door will help Nukewatch raise hell about the military waste in Lake Superior.

Ipod/Itunes Question

My girlfriend just got back from traveling around Guatemala. I’m really glad to have her back and all, but it seems that while she was there, she dropped my ipod into a limestone pool and fried it. However, like a great girlfriend, she bought me a brand spanking new 120g Ipod when she returned home. I suggested that we share the Ipod, since my old Powerbook only has 80g of memory as it is and we both have a lot of music.

Here’s the problem, pt. 1: she has a PC and I have a Mac. This means we can only have the Ipod hooked up to one of our computers. My solution was to have all of her music store on an external hard drive that we could connect to my laptop, but I’m not sure if Itunes recognizes those songs and allows them to be put onto an Ipod without adding them to your library and, thus, my Powerbook’s hard drive.

Is there some simple solution that I am over looking here (besides getting a laptop with a larger hard drive, which isn’t all that simple)?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Been a Voyageur???

Myself, another father, and 4 kids are planning a trip to Voyageurs National Park in early August. Any advice on entry point, camp sites, places of interest, etc. would be appreciated.

Olfactory Observations

I took a walk through downtown Duluth yesterday around 5am and was struck by the ambient smells that a lot of buildings give off when there are no competing smells coming from cars, people, etc.

  • The Kozy Bar & Apartments smells like stale booze. This should surprise no one.
  • Pizza Lucé smells like stale cigarettes. This isn’t exactly surprising, but disappointing. You want it to smell like their delicious pizza. It’s hard to say which smells worse — the Kozy or Lucé. I guess that’s open to interpretation.
  • Angela’s Bella Flora is the best-smelling building in the downtown area.

Meat Puppet Preview tonight…

Just a head’s up for those who may be interested… I’m airing my interview with Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets within the first half hour of my radio show tonight. I’ll also be giving away another pair of tickets to the 10,000 Lakes Festival

Thanks!

Baby’s Got Back

Conversation between two pre-teen boys jumping on a trampoline in West Duluth today:

Boy #1: Says something about some girl.
Boy #2: Dude, that chick is UGLY.
Boy #3: At least she’s got some ass.

Aw, they grow up so fast.

“Pawlenty should do a Sarah Palin and Step Down”

“Pawlenty should do a Sarah Palin and Step Down” that was something my friend Scott Yeazle said, speaking at a rally at city hall today. The rally was in opposition to the governor’s unallotment decisions. I’m not gonna try to be a real reporter or anything, I tried that years ago and was terrible at it, too much ego and opinion, too little filter.

The Rake’s Progress

It’s that time of year where I’m in need of your retired steel-tined leaf rake. It cannot be plastic or bamboo- it must be steel. I chop the tines off for thumb piano keys and I need a whole lot of them for a music program/workshop I’m doing later in the spring. If your rake is missing all but one of it’s tines, I’ll still take it. You can contact me through yelling loudly or the internet thingy.Rake3
