Duluth Skateboarders GTFO???

Can anyone shed light on this?

Help!

EmergencyPrep1 I am looking for a moderator for a forum tomorrow afternoon at the Labor Temple from 4 until 530. The moderator we had scheduled is unable to make it. The topic is regarding funding for long-term care, although you don’t have to have a lot of knowledge about the subject, and there will be local legislators and members of the public there. Can anyone help out?

Peace Cabaret on Tuesday

Please come to the Peace Cabaret at Carmody at 7:30 on Oct. 27– suggested donation a ten-spot. This is meant to benefit Sue Sojourner, who is struggling to assemble the photos, the ephemera, the words, the memories, of her role and those of her friends in the fight for civil rights in the south in the sixties. Hers may be the real “greatest generation”–those who threw their lives into jeopardy for some idea of justice that wasn’t popular at the time.

The entertainment will surprise you–political talk that isn’t boring. I’ve assembled sections of speeches from the likes of Stokely Carmichael, Fanny Lou Hamer, MLK, and more that carry the flavor of those days’ immediacy, the sense that something real could change. They’ll be read by Duluth citizens: David Comer, Portia Johnson, Bart Sutter, Rabbi Amy Bernstein and more.

And hey–for fun, Perfectini plays lounge jazz– another 60s artifact.

come on down and let’s think and feel together about what political change can be.

PDD? Really?

Discuss.

It Is 2009?

Wow. Truly wow. It’s like living in an alternate universe. I’m not sure if I should be more stunned or less.

With an explanation, even.

Honking tree to become a lighthouse.

So, the DNT announced today that the felled honking tree will be re-born as a lighthouse sculpture. Gee, I bet it will be WAY neater than all the other lighthouse yard-art, trinkets, resin statuettes, and other lighthouse crap that is peddled out of Two Harbors each year. Who was the bedazzeled, animal-print wearing greyhair that made that decision? I think I would rather see the great log burned in a bonfire.

Lost dog needs help finding her humans

On Sunday, October 12, I took off from my backyard in the lower Chester park neighborhood. It’s too damn cold now, and I need help finding my humans. I am an adult female (spayed) Springer Spaniel, mostly brown with some white on my paws and face. I was last seen either above or below E. 8th Street, east of Chester Creek.  I would like to go back to my humans, Nick and Echo, as long as they promise to take me on long walks each day and feed me bacon grease. Please call them at (218) 213-7817.

P.S. My human is either too much of an idiot, or not worthy enough, to post a photo of me.

Chip Stewart was a friend of mine

and I can barely remember all the things we did together over the past 27 years… and  I know people who’ve been bumping around with him longer than that…

He’s been a friend who, after many attempts,  saved my life.  I wish I could have returned the favor. Once we tried to save each others lives by taking a trip to Isle Royale. I left my cigarettes behind and he left behind his overeating. We hiked and breathed the fresh air to rid ourselves of life-threatening toxins. We were in our 30’s. As soon as we got back on the mainland we ate a big pizza. We drove 30 mph and felt like we were flying. A few days later I smoked another Marlboro.

Ski Swap?

Could someone give me the 411 on upcoming ski swaps? I’m looking for X-country and downhill.

Steel drum needed!

With the cold weather starting to arrive I’ve been roused to start looking at ways to keep warm.

I found a very cool stove kit that uses a 55 gallon steel drum. The kit adds a door, legs and vent to the drum to make an inexpensive wood stove for my garage.

Trouble is, I have no idea where I can get a 55 gallon steel drum around these parts, can you help?

Free or cheap is best otherwise I could end up with a stove costing more than a cheapo cast iron one from Menards!

Wind Turbine Manufacturing

Finally with the announcement of two wind turbine manufacturing plants, one in Duluth and one in Two harbors, I can get off that rant. How long did that take, ten years? I hope they work. Now if we could have a pilot program to test stormwater retention through the use of boulevard raingardens, (which have had suceess rates of up to 90% retention in places like Seattle and Burnsville) I could get off that one. But I’ve only been talking about that one for 15 or 20 years. I have another one in my head that would have major economic impact on Northern MN but it is so simple that it would be too complicated for the no republicans and the help everybody else out except the working people democrats, so I’ll leave that alone.

Dull Knife

Looking for a local knife sharpening to put a good edge on my kitchen knives.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Any good health food stores?

I am in town for the week and the little one is getting junkie in his chest and nose. We need to buy some echanasia and on the east coast I can only find it and all the vitamins we need at the local health food store. My wife saw Betty Lou’s through Google. Is there any others that you might suggest?

Rally and Ride (or Walk) for Climate Protection

Saturday, October 24 / International Day of Climate Action

3:00pm: Gather on Harbor Dr behind the DECC for a mini-rally and big group bike ride through Canal Park – costumes and noisemakers encouraged. No bike? There will also be a pedestrian march, complete with brass band.

4:00pm: Climate teach-in (details TBA).

In December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen to craft a new global treaty to cut greenhouse gas emissions. While many climate scientists are calling for immediate action to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million or less (we’re now at about 385ppm), the treaty currently on the table doesn’t pass that test.

Halloween Banners

PumpkinSmall

It’s October 1st, and that means the best holiday in the world is only 30 days away. We’re looking for Halloween banners for PDD. There have been a few showing up in the rotation, but if you have more, send ’em in. We want to display Halloween-only banners on Halloween. Remember, here are the rules. Images must be 960 pixels wide by 167 pixels high. Don’t stretch the image to make it fit those dimensions, that always looks poopy. Believe it or not, we have standards here. The Perfect Duluth Day logo will be added by PDD’s art department. If you’d like to add the logo yourself, here’s a layered Photoshop template.
The lower portion of banner photos serve as background to the navigation bar, so crop your image with that in mind. Make sure essential elements are not in the area that will be obscured.
E-mail the masterpieces to banners @ perfectduluthday.com
To view the banners on PDD, click here.
