Flyby
So yesterday, about 2pm, my husband is up on the roof cleaning gutters and I’m acting as a totally ineffective spotter. I look at the sky and I see six fighter jets accompanying, or being accompanied by, one really big plane. They were high up, like the same height that you see a passenger jet traveling, and they were heading I think southwest (but I’m really bad at that kind of thing).
Did anyone else see this? My two thoughts are: the Blue Angels were in Eau Claire last weekend, but why would they have been way the heck up here? And two, could it have been Air Force One or Air Force Two? Do they travel with that many jets?
Anyway, it was cool.

Cream colored electric stove for sale. In great condition, but one burner needs some minor re-wiring. Other than that it works fine. It’s yours for just $200!
Gobin Pawshington rips Babwa Spry Pelts
Duluth News Tribune Editor Robin Washington got one thing right in his column this week: The DNT is not good at promoting itself.
Washington announced that city hall reporter Brandon Stahl has been promoted to investigative/special projects editor and noted some other staff shuffling. It’s supposed to be good news. It shows that the DNT intends to focus more on investigative journalism. That’s what readers want, right? (more…)
Prom Night in Mississippi
Monday, 7:30 PM, Zelda Theater in the Depot
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_zAEGAZoFQ&feature=player_embedded
In 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the integration of segregated schools in America, including their events. In 1970 the town of Charleston, Mississippi, finally allowed black students into their one high school. White parents refused to integrate the school Graduation Dance, starting a tradition of separate, parent-organized White Proms and Black Proms. In 2008, it changed. “Prom Night in Mississippi” follows the disturbing, surprising, and hope filled steps to the first integrated prom at Charleston High School.
This is the second in the series of three “Free Movie Mondays” offered by the Duluth Art Institute. Tour the exhibit “National Geographic Greatest Portraits” for free from 6:30 to 7:30 then join everyone in the Depot’s Zelda Theater for a movie that provides a portrait of racism in our country today.
Memorial Day, the real deal.
I spent the holiday getting my tires/tie rods/alignment replaced/done. If that doesn’t say holiday, I don’t know what does. It was hours upon hours at the service center, me without my laptop and not much to do.
Guy comes in with a combat wounded plate. Service shop is finishing up his transaction and employee says, “Thanks for your service, were you in Nam?”
Turns out he was. Turns out the customer service guy was as well. They talk about locations/dates and it turns out that it is highly possible the guy selling tires once upon a time flew the customer in a helicopter someplace over the jungle in Vietnam. Wow, they can’t make this up. Pair of them tell a few stories, shake hands. Thank each other for their service.
A 20-something woman waiting in line behind the Vietnam vet is waiting less than patiently. Vet leaves. Woman says something like, “What’s all the fuss?”
Just another day at the auto repair shop.

Humor on Campus

I saw this on a UMD bulletin board among all the “House for Rent” and “For Sale” fliers. It made me laugh.
Are you talkin’ it off or walkin’ it off?
So, I’m walking down East Third Street, minding my own business, and a middle-aged man with a goofy smile on his face asks me: “Are you talkin’ it off or walkin’ it off?”
Is that some kind of expression? What could it possibly mean? Did I hear him right?
I’ve found that it’s best in these situations to just say something quickly and politely while continuing to walk, so I just said, “Walking it off,” and kept going.
But now that interaction is bugging me. The only implication I can think of is that maybe I’m supposed to be walking off a hangover, which I guess sort of makes sense. But how would somebody talk off a hangover? And since I wasn’t talking, shouldn’t it have been obvious I was walking it off?
Fractals Contact?
Who has contact info. for the Fractals? I’d like to get a hold of them about a potential gig. Thanks!
Murder House on a Foggy Day
Reading Duluth News Tribune reporter Brandon Stahl’s series of stories on problem properties in Duluth made me think of the Murder House.

Who wants an entry for Grandma’s Half Marathon?
I have one entry left for Grandma’s Half Marathon. First one to call Security Jewelers 218-722-6633 (ask for Carrie or Wynette) and is willing to make a check out SMDC Childrens Hospital for $150 gets it. $75 of the $150 is tax deductible.
I have auctioned these entries on ebay in the past with proceeds always going to local nonprofits and usually get anywhere from $300-$1,000. $150 is a bargain for this sold out event and it goes to a great cause.
Free! Real law books from a real law firm!
Did you like Ally McBeal when it was on the air? Are you devastated that Law and Order is getting the axe after almost twenty years? Isn’t the law totally rad? Do you think books add ambiance to a room? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then here’s a deal for you:
I have to get rid of over 1,500 law books — American Law Reports (ALR), Supreme Court Reporters and Federal Reporters (and their supplements). The Federal Reporters are not a complete set, but the ALR and the Supreme Court Reporters should be.
They need to go and they need to go by the end of summer (preferably mid-to-late July). Use them as paperweights, make a coffee table out of them, stack them against your wall as a sound barrier for your noisy next door neighbor, make secret hidey holes for your flask — the possibilities are endless! Come grab some books and get creative!
You must pick up, I will not deliver. Take as many or as few as you want. Businesses are welcome! Reply to me at eutyro @ lasnem.org and I will email you back and give you a time and location to pick up your new treasure!
Thanks for looking!

Lost cat
We just moved to Lakeside and our cat decided he wanted out. His name is Mingus, he is all black with a small patch of white on his belly. He left on Mother’s day and has been gone since. If you see him please email me at jakesandmingus (at) yahoo (dot) com.
Backstage at RT’s during Father Hennepin I had this thought.
Community more than anything is synergies. Cooperative adaptation. The more. The multiplier. Goodness passing among us as an expression of the real love we can will ourselves to feel for every person we touch, and we actually touch all of them.
Live Tonight at the Fetus!!!
Charity Huot, our May Minneconomy feature, will be playing an in-store today at 5:00! Come on down for some free, great local music!
Thank You Friends…
Liver check, 1-2-3, check, check.
Thank you Duluth. You continue to amaze me with your support of this crazy festival. I mean seriously, how many towns throw an event like this and receive such amazing support night after night, venue after venue. This is a special place we live in.
I would like to especially thank the organizers that slog away at making it happen, the volunteers that make it work, the bands that make it all possible and finally the fans, without who it wouldn’t happen. The biggest thank you should go out to the venues that let us take over and the under-appreciated janitors that have to sweep and swab up after you slobs.
So here’s till next year. Thank you Homegrown.

Close to the End
I don’t think another city on earth just did this. Wonderful time. Tried to see all. Probably saw only 20 out of 150, my apologies to those I didn’t see Aye, the roast of Rick Boo, fairly outrageous. The Rez and Too Many Banjos at Bev’s then Acceleratii then after hours ata Franks. Too many things. Saw the sun come up five times. Rip it up grasshoppers. Bone Appetite over the top. Bill Meyer backing Pat McKinnon, whoa. Sarah Krueger. Nice sound check at Trampled, nerves before going on, talking too much and Jake saved me, Spotted Mule. Fromundas, Father Hennepin, Donald Kinnsley. Lamont Cranston, so much. So many good folks, I thought it was a small Woodstock. More than I can think of, Thanks appreciate it and now I’m going to bed.
Homegrown and Stolen Jacket
Hi Everyone. I think this was the best Homegrown in my 11 years of enjoying it. This is Dave from the Brewhouse. I’m posting cuz I’m pretty upset about my jacket being stolen from the Red Star on Saturday night between 1 am and 2 am. A green Arc’tereckx gore-tex shell I’ve been wearing about three years. I hung it under the bar and left for the bathroom then was chatting. It is Forest Green and has three front zippers for pockets. It is my favorite. If anyone see’s someone wearing a coat like this please text me at 218.591.7741.
If you took my coat and read this take it to the Brewhouse or Red Star and drop it — no questions.
Perfect Duluth Intersection
I would like to nominate the intersection of 19th Ave E and 8th St for Most Courteous and Cordial to go through (unless it is freezing rain and a skating rink – cue video;). Among all the other intersections or four way stops in Duluth it is the best. Could it be a macrocosm of people who actually remember driver’s ed and training? I will leave it up to the masses to comment on the worst intersection.
Duluth Does Doggystyle
Seriously, this would be the best “Duluth Does” event ever. I’m willing to tackle any of the fine tracks from Snoop’s classic album.
I want to carpool from Superior to Duluth.
Starting June 1st I will be a resident of Superior. I am working up at UMD full time. I would love to find someone or some people to carpool with. I am willing to drive if they want to kick in some money, or I’m willing to ride and kick in the cash. My schedule is M-F with flexible start (7:30 – 8:30ish) and end times (4:00 – 5:00ish). Does anyone know someone or a good website to use? Thanks for the help!
